Is unemployment getting better in your states?

It is still bad in Indiana, USA

bj 11-07-2010 12:48 PM

Depends on what part of the state.

Sadiemae 11-07-2010 12:48 PM

I think it is still pretty bad around here.

watterstide 11-07-2010 12:50 PM

i think so, here in michigan.
Fords,GM,and Guardian glass are hiring. (they are working on getting the last of the layoffs, back)
a couple new plants have opened up and 2 more are coming.
the Movie industry has come to michigan, and that helps too.

amma 11-07-2010 12:51 PM

Not much change here in WA :(

Patty Patches 11-07-2010 01:08 PM

NO,it isn;t

mhunt1717 11-07-2010 01:12 PM

Sure isn't here. Lots of people out of work...

FancyFoot 11-07-2010 01:22 PM

15% in Nevada...The highest in the nation.

AlwaysQuilting 11-07-2010 01:37 PM

Not where I am.

maryel 11-07-2010 01:40 PM

Not in CT either...

Annaquilts 11-07-2010 01:40 PM

DH says business is picking up but slow. I know several friends who are out of work recently or under employed, lost their job and trying a hand at handyman.

Juliebelle 11-07-2010 02:21 PM

We have had some pick up here in the greater Raleigh NC area in fact my son in law just got a job after 5 months.

MZStitch 11-07-2010 02:47 PM

It went down slightly here to 11 percent, but we are still the 6th worst state in the union! A neighbor just got layed off, seems worse when you actually know someone!

nativetexan 11-07-2010 02:51 PM

not in mine, sorry to say.

hikingquilter 11-07-2010 02:54 PM

Not here in Massachusetts. I work in a shelter for homeless families. We have capacity for 29 families and we are always full. As soon as one family moves on, another comes in. When families can't pay the rent they are evicted. We have a computer lab where people can come in to do a resume and job search. Some come in daily to fill out applications online and check their email for replies. It's discouraging. My son has been looking for a part time job since June while still going to school.

Hapisinger 11-07-2010 03:44 PM

Not in VA area near the Williamsburg area. I live in Newport News, VA. I have been unemployed since March 2010. I am now helping my parents and mother-in-law by cleaning their houses and any other odd job I can find. I have a son who just graduated in May and is getting married in June 2011 and another is a sophomore in college. I will probably have to sell my car to make ends meet.

Quilt4u 11-07-2010 03:45 PM

Not here. Only it is worse.

gmaybee 11-07-2010 04:32 PM

It's still bad in Michigan. My husband got a job in July after being unemployed for 1 1/2 years. At his former job they came in one day and said they were shutting the place down, let him go that day, then two weeks after that it was closed. At least I have a full time job at a school and a part time job at a quilt shop, so we survived.

pab58 11-07-2010 04:54 PM

Not as far as I'm concerned!! My sweetie has been unemployed now for 17 months. He only has 5 weeks left of unemployment. Not sure what will happen then. It's going to be so difficult for us. I do work, but I don't make a lot of money. We'll get by, but just barely. He looks everyday for a job. He's been on a couple of interviews, but nothing has come of them. He is such a hard worker, always on time, never misses unless really ill (which has been maybe twice in about 5 years), and it's so frustrating to see people who have jobs and not doing them the way they should!

If there is anyone out there who would like to say a prayer for him, please do so. It is so stressful, and he is beginning to feel like a failure.

mrspete 11-07-2010 05:01 PM

well it disapppeared

SuziC 11-07-2010 05:11 PM

It is still bad here in New York...since our governmental idiots in Albany have been running our state into the groud. Maybe now with a new Mayor things will get better. One can ony hope! Makes for a tough Holiday season for a lot of folks.

I will gladly say prayers for him and you too!

akrogirl 11-07-2010 05:13 PM

Still bad here. We lost a LOT of high tech engineering jobs - my old field of employment, and haven't seen much in the way of replacements, other than minimum wage call center jobs.

pookie ookie 11-07-2010 05:18 PM

In the toilet. People are competing for jobs in lower classes.

SueKitten1 11-07-2010 05:19 PM

No it is not. I wonder if it ever will?

pab58 11-07-2010 05:20 PM

SuziC: Thank you so-o-o-o much! He and I can really use all the prayers we can get. I work at a private school and make about 1/3-1/2 what a public school teacher would make. However, I wouldn't change it for the world. I feel I am where the Lord wants me to be. It makes things so difficult sometimes, but I just have to keep the faith that all will work out.

Charlee 11-07-2010 05:21 PM

Still pretty bad here...lots of low-tech jobs...fast food, clerks, etc., but nothing for the educated...and what is there is fading fast!
I think the reason that unemployment numbers are dropping is that unemployment is running out!

:(

DebraK 11-07-2010 05:28 PM

this thread is not going to end well.

Some very judgemental terms being thrown about.

Jingle 11-07-2010 05:51 PM

We have lost so many jobs here, companies moving, its a wonder anyone is working. I don't think it has gotten any better, we heard on the news a week or so ago that there is no inflation, nothing is going up, not true, everything is going up, water, electric, propane gas, gasoline and food, heard last week even beans, rice and most cheaper foods will be going up. Insurance is going up also, I think it was polical talk because everyone that buys anything at all knows prices are on the rise.

karenchi 11-07-2010 05:56 PM

Absolutely not.....Have property in Upper Michigan to build and we can't even sell our house unless we give it away....That is not going to happen. Can't even sell the property.

pojo 11-07-2010 06:01 PM

Not in Pennsylvania

wichypoo 11-07-2010 06:26 PM

Not in West Virginia, either. And the government is trying to destroy the mining industry, which is the only good job in the state for those without a college education. None of my grown children stayed here and none want to come back, because there are no jobs.

Not political talk in the sense that the current leadership is trying to make things sound better than they are, but more a problem with the way the Federal Reserve calculates "core inflation" - i.e. excluding energy and food price changes.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persona...es_price_index

Not very useful given that we HAVE to buy food and some form of energy, while cars and other large ticket items are somewhat more discretionary. It definitely results in an under-estimate of inflation at the level most people experience it.

dkabasketlady 11-07-2010 08:06 PM

14% in Florida and I think my DH will be joining the ranks soon, probably by the end of the year!

Rann 11-07-2010 08:56 PM

Georgia is still in trouble.

amandasgramma 11-07-2010 09:07 PM

Not in ORegon. When I go into Bend, I notice more and more businesses closed down. I, too, believe the only reason there may not be as many people on unemployment is because they're not able to get it anymore -- not because they're employed

fuail 11-07-2010 09:11 PM

Not in California.

akgranny 11-07-2010 11:29 PM

alaska: unemployment on the rise [more than seasonal downswing] and prices are going up ...

Gal 11-07-2010 11:54 PM

Employment is down here in New Zealand, they try to tell us we have turned a corner but who's leg are they trying to pull?
Thank goodness my husband and I are retired, I teach one half day a week now which suits me. In Canterbury where I live we suffered a huge earthquake a few weeks back so much damage to buildings over a wide area, so many folk lost not only their homes but there work places had to be pulled down too! There is an up side however and that is that all the tradesmen out of work are being employed again to rebuild all the damaged buildings, they say it will take years so I guess that is a blessing for some!

Not in my part of state. Unemployment here is around 25%. The rest of state is running about 9- 10%. My husband has a job and I will be looking soon. We just moved into house from 13 months in travel trailer so now I must get out and start looking.
