It depends on how they got the designs. A few years ago my sister bought me a birdhouse, the original one had WV stickers on it and painted the WV colors. The guy said he couldn't sell it with the stickers because it would against the law. I bought my own stickers and at Home Depot, Sherman Williams paint has the licensed paint colors so I got them and painted it and put my stickers on it. Looks really cool

I'd bet one of my machines that the designs on Etsy aren't legally licensed either. I have used a few digitizers on Etsy, some are better than others, but I don't know of any of them that are licensed to do the sports/cartoon/whatever designs.

Both eBay and Pinterest gave removed sellers for selling illegal designs. Some even "harvest" free designs from web sites. Because they are free for stitching does not mean they are free for to sell as your own!
