A usually well placed "Huh" (as in I never thought of it this way...) but not said as a question, seems to work. Clear as mud, huh?

"Whatever" - when said to my spouse - usually means - "I don't like/agree/want . . . " - but not enough to argue/discuss it any longer.

To me "whatever" can be used different ways. Most young people tend to use it in a way that is very rude IMHO. Shows lack of respect and indifference or lack of interest in the person. But some people just don't have a preference when asks their opinion on something.

"I hear what you are saying" is a good answer but sometimes I just make non-committal grunting noises.
