Depending on the size of the window I may or may not shorten, but I always save the extra slats. I store them in empty cardboard gift wrap tubes. I've had to change out several over the years. Surprising how they get bent, cracked, broken or stained!

Sometimes on certain windows I don't bother to shorten them. I just let them rest on the sill. If I shorten I throw them away.
