Folks, my computer picked up a virus from this board. Please be careful. I has totally locked everything. I can't even run the scanner for virus or turn the machine off properly. It wants me to buy a security product. I have Mc Afee.

stefanib123 09-11-2010 06:22 AM

How do you know its from this board?

I've had one like that before. It wouldn't even let me open any of my virus/spyware programs. it would take me to it instead.

Here's what you have to do to get rid of it:

patricej 09-11-2010 06:27 AM

i don't own your computer so can't say this with 100% certainty. however, there have never been any verified virus attacks from this board itself.

unfortunately, we can't verify that every site to which users post links are perfectly safe.

ssnare 09-11-2010 06:28 AM

I was using this board when it happened. I am using another computer now. I clicked on the address you have and it is exactly like it says. I will write the address down and go and try it. Thank you. Sherry

litacats 09-11-2010 06:31 AM

turn it of at the wall and take it to a fix it guy, if it is the 1 I picked up from facebook a few months ago it is a nasty 1 the only way I got rid of it was thru a computer repair shop, what ever you do DON'T BUY THERE SOTWARE, IT READS ALL YOUR DETAILS . steals your ID

patricej 09-11-2010 06:32 AM

did you click on a link leading from this site to another one? we've never had a verified case of virus infection coming from this site itself.

please notify Admin so he can triple-diple check the server.

Rob 09-11-2010 06:33 AM

I had the same issue once somewhere, I don't remember. The virus would not let me do anything to correct it....so I had to go "safe" mode to look for it and delete it.

ssnare 09-11-2010 06:35 AM

I was on this site, using it like I usually am and all of a sudden my computer said it was infected and I could not do anything. I do not know what I had just looked at. I am on another computer at the moment. Please do not take me off as a regular. I need to get my computer fixed. Now, I don't know where to look on the board. Thank you, Sherry

trif 09-11-2010 06:36 AM

I have a pc with Norton virus protection and have also never had a problem with this board, I agree it's possible it happened thru a link. Good luck cleaning out your system.

JCquilts 09-11-2010 06:42 AM

I got a similar virus on my computer and it ruined it.. Took it to my ex who fixes these things. They were finally able to get my files, but could not even reload the operating system. This is a very bad bug.

But,,You can pick this up from anywhere on the net and it is not always the last thing you looked at that infected it.. It could lay dormant until you reboot.. then when it starts to be active.. it starts in one place, spreads inside your computer and everything you do after it starts just makes it worse.

I do know that some of the smileys carry virus ...

No way that I know of to know exactly where it came from.
I am in agreement that it most likely wasnt the board itself, but perhaps a link. I have found bugs in some of the links posted

cjomomma 09-11-2010 06:45 AM

The virus you are talking about seems to be everywhere. I got hit by it twice on 2 different web sites. I had mcafee at the time, now I have AVG and have not had any problems.

NancyG 09-11-2010 07:43 AM

I have Norton virus protection and it indicated that there was a high security virus trying to get through last night while I was on this board (I think I was actually on a link that I went to from the board), so I would say that it didn't come from this board itself, but the link I was going to. Kind of scary, but Norton blocked the virus and saved my computer! Worth every $$ I spent on Norton ☺

Moon Holiday 09-11-2010 07:48 AM

Use an Apple each day to keep viruses away!

Sadiemae 09-11-2010 07:53 AM

There is a new one out there that is attacking companies and is one to really watch for. The government is trying to find the source of it and the anti-virus companies are quickly trying to find an update to prevent it. I can't remember any details, but watch your email.

ptquilts 09-11-2010 08:26 AM

someone mentioned FAcebook, there are some links on there that are dangerous - but people spread them around, like OMG you have to see this, then you click on the link (which takes you OFF FB) and bad stuff happens.
I remember one that was supposed to show you obscene images in Disney cartoons (you were supposed to be outraged, not titillated). I am very suspicious so I googled it first.

franie 09-11-2010 08:34 AM

Seems like I locked up too looking at a wedsite from here but I shut her down right away and rebooted. I also got a warning of a scam recently from my security but not here on the forum. I don't open half the stuff I get and only do it through trusted sources. Someone hijacked one of my daughter's email too recently and I knew it was not her so just deleted it right away. Beware!

franie 09-11-2010 08:36 AM

I think AVG is far better than McAffee, don't you? I had nothing but probs with McAffee and I swear they were the ones causing it so I would buy more of their products.

AVG is the BEST! I've done a lot of research and the free version of AVG is 10 times bettern than the most expensive Mcaffee!

BUT, a program like this won't be picked up by a virus program, as it isn't a virus. You need a "spyware" type program for one like this.

Malwarebytes is an excellent free program. Do a search and you'll find it to download for free. Everyone should have some type of this kind of program.

I've got 2 in the last 6 months. The first thing you need to do is CTRL + ALT + DEL and open up "Start Task Manager" and look in processed and find the program and click end process. That turns it off, so you can then find it and delete it. If you dont' do this, it will keep you from deleting it!

They are getting better and better with these type things. The last wouldn't even let me open some websites that might could delete it! Smart!

Now that I run the Malwarebytes program regularly, I've not had any. It constantly finds them, though.

If I were you, I'd go get AVG and Malwarebytes. Those two should give you complete protection.

Kas 09-11-2010 10:33 AM

Once I got a warning that looked like it was coming from the virus protection on my computer. When I tried to close out of it, it kept putting me into a loop. So I opened my other spyware program and ran a check on the comuter and my first "warning" showed up as malware. It looked just like a warning generated by my own program. So beware.

I should add that it was before I ever found this nice place!

jfifer 09-11-2010 10:42 AM

My computer had a virus too. I finally had to reboot it. It works better now.

Izy 09-11-2010 10:47 AM

I had an issue over a year ago, I had clicked on a link for a quilting site when suddenly a very convincing 'windows alert' popped up saying I had a virus, and to download tah de dah de dah...well to cut a long story short, I had a write ol time getting rid of it, finally found a forum on google which recommend a free programme to download, it worked...the virus was called: antivirus 2009 or something like that so beware...wasn't from the quiltingboard, but it was a quilting related free pattern or something.....

Hope you get rid soon!

MadQuilter 09-11-2010 10:55 AM

I recently had some strange things pop up when I was on the QB and I thought that it was from here. It appears to have been a mal-ware or spyware application trying to sneak in. Pure coinkidink!

I tried McAfee and Norton with terrible results. They were always allowing something thru. On my desk top we have the free version from AVG and the laptop has AVG that I purchased. Malwarebites has a free down load that works great. My computer guy recommends Avg to everyone.

Incase you all don't know it if you go into your cp system and reset the cp back to a date before the virus then run malewarebites it will capture and destroy the virus and or trojan. Just don't asak me how to do it. I have a friend that did it for me.

kalady 09-11-2010 02:56 PM

I got a virus 2 yrs ago and my dear computer nerd had to erase everything!!! He loaded the free AVAST program -I love it -had McAfee and Norton before and nothing as good as this freebie

This was the virus that hit me too antivirus 2008.

wvdek 09-11-2010 05:24 PM

We had a major one too recently. My DH had put both McAfee and Norton on the puter and apparently they are not compatible. DH got rid of McAfee and we don't have near the problems. We also have a spyware. Don't know which one.

DH was on the phone for four days with Dell and our server trying to get it fixed. He had more patience than I would have. I could not understand the techs. Anyway, be careful what you open. If you don't know who it is from, DELETE.

ssnare 09-11-2010 05:40 PM

I took the computer in to have it fixed. When she turned it on, she said it was a common virus they see alot. I cost $200. to have it fixed, it should be ready in 3 days. My husband had a virus a few months ago on his computer. It totally ruined it. We had to buy a new computer. He has Norton on his computer.

mzsooz 09-11-2010 05:47 PM

My SIL told me that when that screen pops up telling you have a virus and buy the software don't click on anything. Do the control-alt-delete thing to get you to the task manager and then shut your browser from there. He says that should stop it.

good luck!

Chasing Hawk 09-11-2010 06:08 PM

We use AVAST, and it's so good for a while I couldn't even send emails...LOL All kidding aside, since we started using AVAST we haven't had a single issue. If a site is infected my screen goes red and an alarm goes off. It works quietly in the background.

We had Norton before and it was as useless as boobs on a boar.....LOL I had more germs from their service than if I didn't use an anti virus program at all.

I had a laptop with McAfee already on it from the factory. It messed up my hard drive somehow. I call their tech line and the guy told me to get rid of McAfee and use another program. I assume after they reviewed the recorded tape he was fired..LOL

prezzy 09-11-2010 06:24 PM

Ssnare. That happened to me last week. i could do nothing.
I had to f8 my coumputer when I turned it on, and than go to safe mold. Once in safe mold I went to restore and restored my computer back to a few weeks ago. it worked.

tweetee 09-11-2010 06:26 PM

I had this not long ago, twice within a week.

I had to do a system restore on my machine, and that has worked fine, my computer is working as it should.

ganny 09-11-2010 06:47 PM

Come to think of it, my computer shut down last night. It told me something was trying to enter my computer and my (something) prevented it but that it had to shut down. I didn't know what it was talking about last night. But I bet I do now!

Someone should notify the Admin. I don't know how.

trisha 09-11-2010 08:53 PM

My husband has been in the computer business for 50 years. One night I got this notice all of a sudden that I too had a virus and could not knock it out. He told me to unplug the computer and wait for a while. Sometimes, you have to wait til the next day before rebooting.
Actually, the company that is trying to get you to quick buy the security stuff is the one that has attached the virus to your computer. That is why you will get norton, or mcafee popping up a lot to get rid of it.
It is not this sight that is causing it, sometimes just takes ahwile before it hits. Could have come from anywhere.

quiltmaker 09-12-2010 04:34 AM

I don't believe it is Quiltingboard....but think it is the links we click on. The links here and otherplaces can be the real killer.

Exactly. my husband clicked on it, and i lost everything on my PC..had to take it in..they had to clean it all..
"it looks like it is coming from your anti-virus protection program, and it is not." it can pop up anytime, on this board or anywhere you happen to be.
your not getting a virus from this message board. IMHO
although you can get one from a link, of course.

this week, i got an email from a friend that only contained a link..i did not click on it..but i let her know her email had been hi-jacked. told her to change her password on that account. she didn't believe me, until she checked her "sent folder"..everyone in her contacts were sent the same email with the virus link.

i use AVG and super antispyware.

good luck, let us know how it goes..

raptureready 09-12-2010 11:37 AM

If you've clicked onto any of the utube videos it might have been from there. Utube is notorious for spreading ctd's (cyber tranmitted diseases).
