I think bartering is going to be making a comeback!! Our serious economy problems are sure to get people to think creatively and that's one way.

Trading goods or services is bartering--I STILL do a lot of it--like when I got a milk goat + cash for a LGD pup recently.
Traded another pup for hay hauling.....another trade was cash + peacocks for a LGD.
I also traded making a quilt top for a lot of fabric, and so on.....
Years ago, traded cooking and baking for car repairs, also bartered a special sausage recipe to a grocery store for groceries.

I traded car repairs for a quilt

agreeing to and coming to an understanding of a fair price/exchange of one item for another.
Bartering can and does happen with money. An item is for sale at $10 someone offers $7, that is batering. Usually an offer is met with a counter offer, it goes back and forth till both parties agree on terms.

Most of what people are saying on here is trading to me, I will give you this for that. That is a trade. A barter is finding common ground on a price.

My American Collegiate dictionary says that no money in involved in a barter - only the exchange of commodities and/or services.

I agree. Item or service in exchange for an item or service of the same value. Agreement between the parties prior to the actual exchange is probably best done in writing if the value is high.

I love to barter! I try to suck my co-workers, & friends into bartering services all the time! The best thing I ever barterd for was a repair on a man's jacket for my Neechi sewing machine! the most recent barters have been , a truckload of cut Maple from a neighbor's yard , just for cleaning it up. 20 lbs. of Apricots in exchange for yard work. 30 years of quilting fabrics for a lap size quilt. Lastly,... 20 lbs of grapes ( for Jam) in exchange for one batch ( 10 lbs ) of home made soap.
