gmaybee, Our area backs up to the Huron Manistee Nat'l Forest so that's why I have seen deer, bear and coyote in a residential area. I wish they'd stay in the woods. I am two blocks in from the edge of the woods, but we walk in that direction. The bears are way too bold west of town.

Chasing Hawk 01-12-2011 09:41 PM

one cat inside

3 dogs who live outdoors in their heated pens. (electric bill this month $240.00)

Several rabbits who ate everything in my garden they could get their lips on. Those pesty things ate my evergreen trees down to the trunks!!

Deer, we seen a coyote last year, crows, ravens, squirrels, chipmunks.

And the always favorite........the nosey neighbor and the neighbor you just want to hit with a big stick.

Gramof6 01-13-2011 03:28 AM

Roda I loved your pics! Adorable!

Inside we only have 2 Malamute dogs. We have numerous birds that frequent the feeders along with squirrels. Once there was an opposum sitting on our back fence. We have also seen coyotes run through the darned neighborhood at night. We hear them a lot if we are out in the Summer evenings.

BRenea 01-13-2011 04:47 AM

We have a little terrier mix dog and three cats that stay indoors. Our Australian Shepherd mainly stays in the yard but likes to come in during bad weather. Outside we have our cattle (Limousin and Texas Longhorn breeds) plus a few mini bantam chickens. We also have all sorts of wildlife: coyotes, javelinas, owls, squirrels, skunks, armadillos, raccoons, swamp rabbits, Caracaras (Mexican Eagles) and much more. Ah, country life!

Elfi2 01-13-2011 05:16 AM

Inside: our Jack Russel Tiny, the occasional mouse, the other day we were visited by a snake (python or carpet snake) who was watching TV with us, lots of geckos, sometimes a green frog looses his way into our house
Outside: 6 horses, 2 calves, 18 chicken, then lots of wallabies and kangaroos, rabbits, foxes, dingos, possums, greeen tree frogs and toads, now with the terrible rain we had even rats are looking for higher grounds, snakes and lots of different parrots and all sort of birds - cookaburras, wrens, wagtails, etc, etc..... and maybe a few others I haven't discovered yet as they roam at night!!! ;)

Midwestmary 01-13-2011 05:17 AM

Fun thread! Enjoyed the pictures.. Aside from hubby, I live with two dogs - a spoiled cockapoo and an equally spoiled shipoo and a canary who sings while I sew. Outside I enjoy feeding the birds and the squirrels (fox squirrels in our area).

newfiegirl 01-13-2011 05:21 AM

Living in South Florida now in the country (lived in NYC and Miami), don't get to see any bears, but we have a small grove of trees my son left when he built his house and I have seen racoons, possum, rabbits, snakes, squirrels and hawks (they diminish the squirrel population occasionally). My granddaughters put up pine cones with peanut butter and bird seed for the birds. I feed the leftover bread, salad greens I don't use, and whatever I think they would like. Must be everything because I don't see any leftovers. Have some tomatoes growing and my son is jostling with a racoon as to who will get the first tomato. Love the country.

barb12makeitsew 01-13-2011 05:41 AM

I'm in a suburb of Chicago and outside have squirrels, chipmunks, a fox, a big coyote, lots of birds and field mice.

Your cats are so pretty! The one in the box is too cute!

Oops, forgot the inside critter(s). Have a blue headed pionus (small parrot) which I inherited from my daughter because the vet said it did so much better in my house; and, when she comes to visit, a part Great Dane and a very playful cat. She found the dog at a train station in horrible condition and the cat which she originally thought was a piece of orange paper blowing in the wind on a busy street in Ft. Lauderdale. Have to say they couldn't have found a better owner. Needless to say, when she comes to visit, the bird is banished to my bedroom. Otherwise, he is in the dining room and at dinnertime demands his share, especially corn.

Aunt Retta 01-13-2011 06:10 AM

WE live in the city, after growing up on a farm. I miss the animals. In the house i have one much loved and spoiled black lab. She is very good at her job which is to be close to me, and be ready to comfort me whenever I may need it. We do have an iragation ditch directly to the south of us. That brought a racoon family that lived in our attic. We had to get those out to do some electrical work and they got to messing up the sidding were they went in and out. Now we have some birds, or maybe rats, or cats living in the north wall, were I sew,and do lots ot things. I try not to trhink about the mess they are making.

JAGSD 01-13-2011 07:16 AM

OKLAHOMA PEACH 01-13-2011 07:40 AM

jad1044 01-13-2011 08:26 AM

Where to begin - - - 2 housecats, one long haired chihuahua in teh house and Chirp the cockatiel; and they all comingle just fine - amaizingly!

Outside I have my herd of goats, we have many cows who will have many calves this spring; Pyrenees dogs and pups, border collie, Aussie pups, several cats and kittens.

On the wild side, coyote, a cougar (which they say we DON'T have) owl, fox, racoon, deer, turkey, and yesterday I saw cardinals, bluejays, chickadees, sparrows, squirrel and 2 robins, all pecking in the snow for food under the pine trees; a real haven for them for food as well. Plus what I throw out for them to eat - they don't go hungry.

watson's mom 01-13-2011 08:49 AM

We have 3 Yorkies in the house, 7 cats (fixed) in the barns, 23 horses in the paddocks. There are several coyotes, foxes, and deer in the neighbourhood but we seldom see them. There is a skunk in the hay barn and a few mice as well, lots of rabbits and birds ( cardinals, bluejays, chickadees, sparrows and starlings ) in the yard at the feeders. My neighbour has squirrels in his trees, sometimes they come here but not often I'm happy to say.

rdupuis 01-13-2011 08:55 AM

I love the morning after the first snow, You can really see how the yard comes alive during the night. There are tracks large and small going in every direction. Only when it snowes , you are reminded of the many critters that are around you.

Minding My Ps and Qs 01-13-2011 08:58 AM

We have lots of BIG birds - including owls and hawks and vultures - and we have snakes, anoles, lizards and alligators. We try to keep ALL of them OUT-side! LOL

pojeda 01-13-2011 09:08 AM

I have 9 parrots (2 monk parrots, 1 Congo African Grey, 1 senegal conure, 1 Buffon's Macaw, 1 parakeet, 1 Jardin, (my avatar) and 2 Yellowheaded amazons) and 3 very spoiled dogs. 1 is a lab mix, 1 cocker spaniel mixed with we think is a pit bull or bull mastif, and he is really sweet, but dumb as a rock! and a 15 year old chihuahua. Yes, she is old, but healthy. I give her 2 81mg baby asprins a day for her arthritis.

cafegold2 01-13-2011 09:48 AM

From experience...beware of the geese when they are breeding in early spring. I used to carry a large purse to threaten them. A goose bite really hurts.

Nanclm 01-13-2011 10:12 AM

We now live in a subdivision so see very few wild animals other than birds and an occasional squirrel. Inside we have a 15 pound "Garfield" cat named Maui and two 9 month old Morkies named Tilly and Sawyer. They keep us laughing when we aren't trying to keep them out of trouble. Still tend to chew things up and carry available clothing around. This is a far cry from the animals we owned and saw running wild on our farm of 36 years.

catrancher 01-13-2011 10:28 AM

Two cats inside (and a few moths and spiders), outside we have deer, coyotes, raccoons, skunks, all kinds of birds, squirrels, more cats, dogs, and a bobcat!

finchelover 01-13-2011 11:15 AM

Nothing inside but see squirrels all kinds birds right now at my feeders,of coarse cattle, barn cats but the most fascinating was yesterday when I looked out of my sewing room and saw this "thing" in tree,I thought maybe an owl so I hollered at my husband who was in the other room and he said"well, that's an owl" He was a big thing I think he sat in that tree for couple hours I which he had turned around so I could really see him.

granny5 01-13-2011 11:20 AM

I have a guard mutt, Buster, who is an outside dog. Love him, but outside he stays. I have squirrels, rabbits, lots of red birds, hawks, owls, coyotes, lots of barn RATS (not mice), those darn wild hogs that are just ruining everything around here, and that sneaky bobcat that has tried more than once to make supper out of Buster! Ah life in the country - just not too far from the LQS!

Cheryl 01-13-2011 11:50 AM

hperttula123 01-13-2011 01:10 PM

I have two cats inside....outside...lots of stuff. We used to have a fox that lived across the street for a couple years(haven't seen it in a while). We seen a bobcat a while ago and now have tracks in my yard. Lots of birds, deer, skunk.

Sugar 01-13-2011 02:01 PM

I envy people their horses. I have an Arabian gelding who is just amazing, but he lives with my granddaughter due to my physical problems (old age?) and I don't think I'll ever get him back - they are buddies. So now I have to be content with 2 dogs (an Aussie and Pommy), 2 bearded dragons, 1 Burmese cat, and 1 Sulcata Tort. They manage to keep me busy and I really enjoy caring for animals. I'd have a houseful if not for my more practical husband.

finchelover 01-13-2011 02:13 PM

I know what you mean about missing your horse. We had several,i didn't ride but my husband and children did. I would go out and work on northside in my flower bed and here come the horse they enjoyed me throwing the weeds over electric fence to them. One day I went for few days to our daughters and when I came back I found that my husband sold all the horses. It was a sad time. My husband said he was getting to age where it hurt him to ride or rope.

Mandie 01-13-2011 02:21 PM

Inside: 2 dogs ~ 6 y/o Greyhound w/3 legs 10 mon old jack russell / Chihuahua mix and a 40 gal tank filled with fish.

Outside: pretty boring every now and then a squirrel or 2. A few snow birds I guess thats what I get for living in town.

I grew up in the country with all kinds of wild life in our front yard. Miss it a bit.

Jill 01-13-2011 02:45 PM

Lots of birds (I feed them), nest of rabbits under our deck that is enclosed, occasional cat, many dogs all around us. Inside we have a 3-year old yellow lab named Haley.
