What did you do with your wedding dress?
mine is still hanging in the closet (got married October 1975) |
I never had a wedding dress. I rented a tuxedo, instead.
|
I just looked at mine again last week. It is made from embroidered fine netting and it lives in the bottom of one of my stash boxes. I always wanted to do something with it but don't know what to do. I also have the long lace coat my Mom wore to my wedding, she passed away 8 months later at age 56(my age now). I would love to make a treasure from that too. So there they both have been for 28 years.
|
I think it's at my parent's house...it will be ten years in June! Think maybe they want the closet space back?
|
Mine is in a box in my room. I got married in 1987. I never had it cleaned after the wedding and I took it out last year. It had some old dirt on the bottom. I soaked it in the washer with no agitation. I rinsed it and spun it for a minute. Took it out and put it on a dress form to drip dry. I kept it there for a few months because it looked so pretty. When we were selling the house I had to put it away because the real state agent felt that a wedding dress on the dress form looked creepy and would scare potential buyers. Little that he knew that what was scaring the customers was him.
|
Mine has been hanging around since 1978-first 2 daughters didn't use it. Last daughter wants to have it remade into her veil and her daughter's flower girl dress. She was afraid I wouldn't want her to cut it up! Funny, since I am cutting up every piece of fabric I can get my hands on!!

I have no idea where mine is- how bad is that. Since I have 3 sons I don't have to worry about it until I get sentimental and want to do something with it :) |
There is a woman in my area that takes your treasured clothes and makes teddy bears or other stuffed animals for you.

I gave it back to them  We got married in Eureka Springs, Ar at an old timey photo shop with wedding chapel. Took about 30 mintues from the time we walked in the door. I wore an old fashioned Victorian dress and hubs was decked out as old west sheriff ....shotgun and all! It was a cheap wedding and we eloped!!! They made me wear red lipstick so I look like a whore.

Which one??? The first one I tossed into the dumpster as I drove away from the beautiful home we built on a small lake in SW MI. I wanted no reminders. We divorced after 6 years due to his cheating with every stupid woman that fell for his good looks. The second one is still in my closet and we will celebrate our 14th anniversay on June 1st! Love was better for me the second time around!
|
I made my wedding dress. It is a mini length dress and that was also 100 lbs ago. I still have the dress, still have hubby. Now we are like plumb Hobbits and we "stepped out the door" 38 years ago. Time sure flys by so fast.
|
I have no idea what happened to the dress I wore the first time. It wasn't a wedding dress anyway.
The dress I wore the second time was just a white dress with a lace overlay. It's hanging in the closet. |

The third marriage, we eloped to Maryland, and I wore a white maternity shirt (can you guess WHY? ) and black stretch pants - I looked like a waitress with some silk flower in her hair. Of course that was the marriage that "took" - we've been married for 17 years now, together for 18. |

Mine is hanging in the spare bedroom closet. All 18 or so yards of plum colored satin. It's a twp piece medevil gown. Completey handmade by me.
|
Mine was a street length jersey or something my mom made. I wore it to church a few times with a really pretty jacket. Then I washed it (I was young and stupid) and it would have fit a small 5 year old. So, it went into the trash with hubby's pink underwear. So far the marriage has fared better than the laundry...40 years and counting.
|
Set the first one on fire after that fiasco of a marriage ended. And, woosh, does lace burn up fast :-D . It was actually quite enjoyable to watch.
The second wedding, my father had died that day, I put the dress away that afternoon without cleaning, thinking I would get back to it after the funeral, and fifteen years later I looked at it and it was wicked stained. It is still in the back of the closet, festering, I guess. Just the other day my DH asked if I still needed to keep it there, space is getting kind of tight with all the fabric I have been storing. I am kind of afraid to open the bag  it is raw silk, wonder if that will clean up? |

I'm not married yet, but my mother kept her dress for me to wear. Unfortunately, it doesn't even come close to fitting me, and it's really outdated (they married in 1977) but we're going to cut it up and make a christening outfit for my son next fall.
I feel really bad that she kept her dress for me and I don't even want to wear it... |
Mine is boxed and in the back of the closet. Married 25 years. DD hasn't decieded if she wants to wear it or not. I have a friend that has a wedding gown collection. If DD doesn't want mine I may give it to her. My friend has tea parties and the young ladies play dress up. She's taken some remarkable outdoor photos in all seasons.
My mother made her dress out of silk that my father brought back from Japan. He didn't meet her till after the war. A few years back she cut it into hankerchiefs and put tatted edging on them that her mother had made. One for each of the grandchildren. |
At some point I plan to cut it up to make a "divorce" quilt. I was married for 22 years and have been divorced for 10. I should probably get around to making it! It is on my endless "to do" list. Work just seems to get in the way of all those things I want to do.

I kept my dress from #1... DS and DD came from that marriage. Kept the dress, veil, photos and video. I want them to know I loved their father and vice versa!
Dress from #2 was simpler and I have kept that one too. Both were ivory and the second was simpler and I "could" wear it if we ever went on a fancy cruise or something like that! I think I'll use some of the lace from #1 and make a christening gown if a grandchild ever comes along! |

Mine is also boxed up and in the closet. Great idea to use it to make a christening gown. My daughter recently asked me after I made a formal dress for her if I would make her wedding dress. I laughed and told her "Not if you want me to be there." (Or give me at least a year to make it.)

Did any of you see the story about the woman who left her wedding dress with her ex when they divorced? She told him he could do whatever he wanted with it. He's used it for all kinds of stuff including a tow rope, dog chew, shop cloth and many more. Thought it was kind of funny. Probably pretty good therapy for him.

I got mine back from being cleaned and preserved in January. We just got married last November. I'm not sure what the plan is for it yet but I think I'll keep it around for a bit.

Exactly! I left a beautiful home on the beach in Ca, every thing I owned but two suitcases and two little babies. I never looked back. |
Well, mine is on the Getting to know you thread. Since I just got married last September. It's still in my closet, waiting for some occasion that might warrant wearing it again.
When I was 20, I eloped and I wore a suit. No clue what ever happened to that. Good marriage, just not much of a wedding. Last year, we got married at my SIL's and my 95 year old father in law and his 94 year old sister were our attendants. It was beautiful. Geezer fantasy wedding. My daughter catered it, his cousin made a beautiful cake and a fun time was had by all. |
Mine all 9ft of silk brocade and an 18ft 3 tiered veil is hanging in my son's closet since 1993... I have never taken it out and tried it on again, nor do I have any idea what to do with it.
I have 2 boys so I not saving it for them. Maybe I'll cut it up and do something with it... Any ideas? Theresa |
Ditto to the 'which one?'
First one my mother made from three different patterns I showed her. I liked parts of all three so she created the perfect dress! (Now you know where I get some of my creativity from). I made the hat with vale but don't know what happened to the hat. THAT dress was worn many years and a divorce later as a pregnant bride for Halloween, then cut up and used to line baskets I was decorating and selling. Second one - I wore black jeans a white camisole and a white fringed blazer - we had a motorcycle wedding. (Still have those jeans - I think) 365 guests rode in from 16 states! Next - we won't talk about Last - remarried to # 2 Still have the ivory gown hanging in my closet! Married in a campground on a mountain, my son drove me to the 'alter' on his brand new (borrowed) HD motorcycle!!!! |
Mine is in a zippered bag in my dads closet. I will probably just end up selling it. It 's really fluffy and white. Not many people go with white anymore.

Mine is hanging in my hall closet. Been married since 1974. I made my veil and my dress...very simple, empire waist, straight skirt, scoop neck, peasant sleeves.
Don't know why I 'm saving it. I couldn't even get one leg into it any more, and it's too small for either of my daughters. Besides, after all the worry, work, and expense of the first one's wedding 2 yrs ago, we're offering to pay the other one to elope! |
