What do you collect ~ besides fabric

Hi fellow quilters,
I collect vintage Raggedy Ann & Andy dolls, Mary's Moo Moo's figurines and unusual rocks. What do you collect ? Besides fabric of course. :)

earthwalker 03-14-2014 07:58 PM

All manner of things:)...books, skulls (not real ones), good crystal, vases, anything vintage and unusual, obsessed about chairs and furniture but am kept in check by my husband:), mirrors, art, anything that can be put on the wall. Outside....plants, plants and plants, and pots, plus any overflow from the house that will withstand the weather and look "sculptural" (well to me anyway). Only the amount of pets the law allows ....otherwise I'd have a petting zoo:). There's probably more, but that's all I can think of just now.

DebbieJJ 03-15-2014 01:23 AM

Books - both reading and crafting, baskets, yarn (waiting on me to crochet into something!), sheet music for the piano and organ, music for listening to. Looking at my house, you'd think I collect junk, but I use most of it, and if I don't, I just haven't found time to clean it out!:p At least that's my story, and I'm sticking to it!

quilter1 03-15-2014 01:48 AM

Cookbooks and recipes- once in a while I might even try out a new recipe. And I love dishes but have way too many. MY DH collects motorcycles.

alfosa421 03-15-2014 01:50 AM

I collect Barbie Dolls. I started in 1988 when the first Holiday Barbie came out. I purchase the Holiday Barbie every year and others that I find that are unique. I have a set of 4 seasons Barbie's, the Gone With the Wind series. Several Bride Barbies, Birthday Barbies. Lets just say I have a lot, over 100.
I have them all on display.

My house collects dust.........

Retired Fire Chief 03-15-2014 03:21 AM

Critters! I have more of those than any other one thing. But I do love vintage dishes, footed etched bowls, little sectioned dishes, spoon holders, anything that is cute that will add charm to my table or buffet when friends are here. I recently acquired a set of 4 jade-ware mixing bowls for a steal, I still feel bad for getting them so cheap from a yard sale, but I love them.

Retired Fire Chief 03-15-2014 03:22 AM

I responded before I saw Woodster's response, love it - I should have said my house collects dog hair!

NUTMEG10 03-15-2014 03:30 AM

This is a fun thread - need to see pictures. I love vintage (anything) pictures, lamps, ceramic figurines, mini tea pots and cups, display plates, crystal and glass candle holders with various style chimney.

Amen to that! Serious response: unusual "sewing" items ( tea pots, music boxes, special pincushions, etc.)

ThayerRags 03-15-2014 04:12 AM

Vintage “People-powered” tools and equipment that have a hand crank or treadle. Mostly sewing machines, but I’m also putting together a collection of stand-alone bobbin winders, grinders (meat, grain, metal, knife), drills (hand & brace), can openers, and pencil sharpeners. I have a rope maker, a ranch wall-mount telephone, & a portable wind-up phonograph with records. I think I still have a crank ice cream maker, but I haven’t seen it for a while. I like things that are hand or foot operated.

Peppers. My mom's nickname was pepper and after she died, I started collecting them. Also collect angels, snowmen and santas.

Anything ELVIS!!! My home is an annex of Graceland.

ube quilting 03-15-2014 04:41 AM

I love Hammered Aluminum. It is so usable and "collectabley" cheap. Depression Glass, Milk Glass, and I use it all the time. No use in having it if I don't use it!

Chintz Ware
which is almost impossible to find anymore unless you want to spend big bucks.

Vintage table cloths. I love old stuff. My whole house if furnished with 2nd hand shop and yard sale finds.

I don't limit my collecting to any thing or era specific stuff, If something catches my eye and the price is good, it is mine!

peace

EDIT: @ post # 8: oh! jade ware, love it.

I love it!!!!! My house collects dust too because i'm too busy doing other things, but I do collect books, sewing notions, kitchen gadgets, and baskets...most of which are in use...

QltrSue 03-15-2014 05:00 AM

I'm a sucker for dishes! I love things to set a pretty table. And pitchers.

Patski-Mi. 03-15-2014 05:00 AM

I collect Santa's and St. Paddy's Day things. I try and display my Irish things once a year. Have quite a bit ..Two china cabinets filled. One with Irish Santa's and the other with St. Paddy's figurines. My Santa's are all over the house at Christmas.

Travelin2some 03-15-2014 05:03 AM

I used to love Mary Moo Moos. But because of downsizing, I now have to sell them all. I have decided to let someone else enjoy even the most unusual of them all. So now, I only will have only dust bunnies and fabric to collect. Sa the dust bunnies are not nearly as cute as Mary Moo Moos

kyquiltlover1942 03-15-2014 05:05 AM

I collect Boyd's bears resin pieces, I have stuffed bears from all over the world, salt & pepper shakers and pink glass. The house is full, so it is a good thing Boyds have stopped making their resin bears. Can only find them at resale shops now. Ande like a lot of other quilters, my house collects dust.

tessagin 03-15-2014 05:23 AM

My house collects dust and dog hair. My dog Brutus collects fabric scraps and threads. DH collects shot glasses. I also collect key chains from airports where family and friends have traveled. I also have some with sewing/quilting notions attached. I have a key chain that is with me all the time with a measuring tape. I give those kinds of key chains to my friends also who like to sew or just need a measuring tape at some time.

Geri B 03-15-2014 05:32 AM

Paperweights, oriental pieces, rooster things, cat statuary, Jim shore figures, pin cushions, odd stemware, depression glass, have displayed a few vignettes at local library...they do a monthly display case for anyone interested.......and the sad thing...when I am gone the stuff will be garage-saled, but I had fun collecting, dusting it!

Conartist1945 03-15-2014 05:34 AM

I'm with you Woodster...you can write your name in the dust...just don't leave the date!

SouthPStitches 03-15-2014 05:38 AM

Yarn, free Kindle downloads (300+), Boyds bears resins, dinner ware.

nygal 03-15-2014 05:39 AM

I no longer "collect" things but I do have a nice collection of "Memories Of Yesterday" figures which they no longer make and I have a doll collection. I also have a nice collection of Jim Shore things. As someone else above mentioned I too seem to now collect some dust!!

Jackie Spencer 03-15-2014 05:39 AM

Vintage sewing items, pin cushions, sock darners, old spools from spinning wheels, wooden thread spools, old needle packets, vintage sewing baskets, old embroidered linens, buttons and button boxes, milk glass, tea sets, anything to do with crazy quilting.

I collect thimbles from our travels. My children have also gifted me many thimbles from their travels.

Billi 03-15-2014 05:56 AM

I don't call myself a collector mostly because the second you tell someone you collect something thats their focus of anything they wish to gift you and it gets out of control quickly. I do love antique and vintage items like Ube Quilting no point having it if I'm not going to use it. I have a few old crocks I use in my kitchen, and some vintage stemware, and aperitif glasses we drink out of makes me sad when one gets broken but at least it's not closed up in a box just sitting around waiting for a trip to the goodwill when I am gone. I love native amercan pottery, baskets, and blankets. Any truly antique or vintage pieces I have are for decoration, reproduced items are mostly used for vases or storage of small items, except the bow and arrows, and chest plate those are just for decoration.

Deb watkins 03-15-2014 05:56 AM

I have a substantial collection of Dept. 56! Love setting up the displays as much as finding new patterns and cutting fabric!

cherrio 03-15-2014 06:41 AM

patterns, cardinals ornaments, shot glasses and critters. I'm starting to believe the strays talk to one another and tell all where to find a warm bed and a meal. 4 dogs and 4 inside cats. My kids used to think I had a lot o fabric. 1 Rubbermaid tub. ha!

Rose Marie 03-15-2014 07:17 AM

My coffee table has a drawer with a glass top over it. I collect ceramic animal families but the space is full so no more.
I get a lot of reaction from people who see it the first time. Kids love looking at all the animals under the glass top.
Don't see as many animal family ceramics as I used to in the Hallmark stores.
Some of mine date back to the 50's.

lenette 03-15-2014 07:25 AM

I collect miniatures. Chairs, vases, anything else I love. I'm finally getting pickier, and even giving away a few items.

KwiltyKahy 03-15-2014 07:56 AM

Patterns and books. And covered bridges, pictures, metal sculptures, figurines, puzzles, cookie jars, napkin holders, anything covered bridge.

AngeliaNR 03-15-2014 08:07 AM

Books, mostly--also things related to children's books, mostly, Alice in Wonderland.

adamae 03-15-2014 08:23 AM

At 79, I'm trying to not collect anymore. I used to collect salt cellars, Niloak pottery, old clocks for DH. Miss our good days when we would go looking for antiques. He's gone now and I allow myself one hobby....quilting.

Wonnie 03-15-2014 08:43 AM

Miniature books...baskets....

SunQuilts 03-15-2014 08:55 AM

I collect nutcrackers, paperweights, and kaleidoscopes. That said, I am like Adamae. At my age And on my own, I have stopped collecting but I have made a list of all my collections with prices paid so when I am gone, my kids will at least know the value of my stuff. What they do with it is up to them!

I probably should add quilt patterns to my collection list although they weren't intended to be a collection! On my behalf, I have actually made some of them but an awful lot were "someday" purchases and someday hasn't gotten here yet!
