For Everyone with children,

You have to read "Bread and Jam for Francis". The wise Mother bear says "Of course you can have bread and jam". Of course after several days/week all of the other food looked so good.

Read it to the nursery school every year.

We ate everything as children I did not do not like bananas but my mom said even as a baby I gagged on them. We were not picky grew up on wild game and fish, I do not eat fish now had to much as a child I guess. Love almost all veggies WE always had a large garden and mom canned everything I guess when you are a part of the process (it was a family affair) things taste better. But then again Mom was (is) a good cook!

Tomatoes, onions, both of which were in the green salad my Dad had to have every night & we of course always had to eat some of everything served. And peppers, especially stuffed bell peppers. Never could figure out why I couldn't just eat the salad minus the tomatoes & onions, the BLT sandwiches minus the tomato, or the stuffing of the stuffed bell pepper. Would have been a whole lot more eating going on and a whole lot less fussing & gagging with my food.

Oh well, I'm a big girl now, so I can & I do!:D

Greenheron 09-19-2011 04:26 PM

Cooked turnips! My mother would even cook a pot of potatoes and turnips together and then pretend they were all potatoes. Yeah, right. Stinking miserable excuse for food. Why would anyone want to eat a cooked turnip? :hunf: :hunf: :hunf: :hunf:

Raw turnips are crisp and tasty.

PS Reading other folks tribulations reminded me of canned creamed corn. I could NOT choke it down, I don't know how I got rid of it. Canned peas, spinach were similarly nasty. I didn't know delicious veggies existed until I married a man who gardened. WOW!

PPS Anyone out there like beef marrow? Dad and I used to share marrow from the arm roast and the rest of the family would turn green.

creamed tuna and peas over toast. makes me gag just thinking about it. I too had the eat it or you'll have it for breakfast, dinner, etc. swore i'd never do that to my kids, I let them try things on their own time. if all they ate was PBJ, chicken nuggets or macaroni, didn't matter. in fact they did for years. now, they eat everything, even sushi and sashimi and they are both healthy and vibrant young men!

For me growing up, it was tomatoes. To me, they had an incredible amount of snot....the word slime never occured to me. I got married and went to TX in '64 and was introduced to ocra....slime was still snot. I liked it fried after all but no other way. Went to Cuba, planted a garden in '72 where we had cherry tomatoes....DH didn't dare plant bigger.....and I learned to like tomatoes but still have to squeeze the snot out of the big ones before I'll eat them. THE ONE thing I will never abide even into old age is cantelope...it smells like something rotted in the refrigerator. My deceased dh pooh-poohed that until he came home from work one day after I'd been to the commissary, opened the fridge for a beer and said "when was the last time you cleaned out the fridge?" and I said yesterday. He said "WELL, SOMETHING IS ROTTEN IN THIS FRIDGE" and I told him to look in the veggie drawer. All he said was "OH". He had to take it outside and clean it and cut it up and put in tupperware...that was a rule I enforced for his own good. That is some nasty stuff...

We must be related. My mom told me that as a baby, mashed banana was the only food I ever spat out. To this day, if there isn't still a touch of green at the stem end, I can't eat them.

Liver! Bleck!!!

BellaBoo 09-19-2011 07:38 PM

I never had to eat anything I didn't like. Only one vegetable I don't like and that's beets. I detested cheese and mayo. I grew up eating garden fresh foods, fresh eggs, fresh whole milk, and slaughtered beef and pork. My grandmother and grandfather had a rural farm and I lived with them. My grandmother baked all our cakes and pies. Not many stores to buy anything but the basics so having a soda or candy bar was a real treat, not an everyday thing. I know I owe my great health all these years to my childhood diet.

I grew up in the country also. Family raised everything and slaughtered everything and milked cows. My mother and I would go to the chicken pen, pick out 5 big, fat hens, kill them, clean and dress them and the cook them "Southern Fried" for dinner. She cooked all fresh veggies that we picked from Daddy's garden, made her own bread (mostly biscuits and corn bread/pones). Mother made cakes, and pies from scratch. She and I usually picked the berries (black berries, strawberries, blueberries, etc). We also make jams and jellies from them and grape jelly from the grape arbor. Mother's kitchen was always open it seemed. She made the best fresh vegetable soup you could ever want! She was the best cook ever. I try hard to come close to her cooking. All my husband's family want to come to my house for my cooking or when I go to their house, they want me to cook. The only things I can think of that I didn't like was cooked turnips and rutabegas. And I agree, being part of the process made a difference and appreciating the hard work that went into cooking over 60 years ago. No microwave, no MacDonalds, no supermarkets everywhere, do electric dishwasher. You ate what you were blessed to have. With cast iron skillets, enamel, and aluminum pots, guess who the dishwasher was!!

Canned peas should be outlawed.

Gramof6 09-19-2011 10:11 PM

Spinach, cooked turnips, beets, and watermelon is all I can think of that I cannot eat nor ever could. I love all kinds of beans and peas & all other veggies. I will even eat liver & onions smothered. Watermelon just has a nasty texture IMHO. Love cantaloupe.

Ellen 09-19-2011 10:23 PM

Gram, If I was in the same room when you ate the cantalope, I would have to go outside or fro-up. Can't get the stuff past my nose. I'm gagging just thinking about it. Bless you all that can eat it while your eyes roll back in your heads in bliss.
I like watermelon but am satisfied with one big hunk once a year.

Hominy UGH!!

Mom never forced me to eat anything. I don't like okra and I don't like oysters and I don't like a few other things. However food was never a fighting issue when we grew up.

Ellen 09-20-2011 12:08 PM

aam5019, have you tried it sauteed in lots of butter and salt and pepper? It's just pretty darn good that way.

aam5019 09-20-2011 06:19 PM

I haven't been able to get it down any way it's fixed. It was one of those "you are going to sit here til you eat it" things. Sat there until midnight. She finally gave up and let me go to bed. LOL

avacadoes---didn't have a problem eating veggies but mom used avacado in a salad and wouldn't believe me that my tongue felt swollen. she didn't beleive in allergies .she just thought kids made that up when they didn't like something. i actually like guagamolie (sp) but each time i eat avacado my tongue swells so i stay away from it.just glad i didn't have a allergic reaction like some people do i may not be sitting here today.

luckylindy333 09-20-2011 07:57 PM

My mom only tried to make me eat something once and I still can't stand canned vegetables to this day! She made me sit at the kitchen table for hours.

ZTAgirlknits 09-20-2011 08:08 PM

Peas and Lima beans.....ick!!! I still don't eat them!

Creamed tuna and peas???!!!?? Who thought that nasty combination up? YUCK, it makes me nauseous just to think about it!

Ellen 09-20-2011 08:29 PM

I just remembered fish sticks. Not one has passed my lips since Feb. 29, 1964. I had no choice before that. YUCK. I prefer fresh fish not molded. I guess you know someone invented tartar sauce just to make fish sticks edible....?

At least that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I am with you. Used to hide the liver between a piece of white bread and butter. Still tasted awful. I also shoved it under my plate, or made it fall in my glass of water. Didn't help. Had to sit at the table until it was done. Now, I would and did not ever do that to my children because of my liver and onions upbringing.
Still can't stand the smell of it.

chris_quilts 09-21-2011 07:50 PM

Burned chicken pot pie!!! Dad's specialty so yummy after sitting on a plate all night and that is also your breakfast and I slept at the table because we had to clean our plates before we coiuld leave the table. Pie was not just burned - it was scorched!!! Dogs wouldn't even eat it - it was that inedible.
