Mine was cauliflower. Couldn't stand the stuff. And peas made me throw up. My mom said I had to eat my veggies, but that didn't mean they would stay down!

Zuchinni......couldn't swallow it! But now, I love it!

Marjpf 03-26-2010 08:42 AM

Liver and onions. The smell even made me gag. My mother also occasionally served tongue. Ick!

Have Fun!!

Lisanne 03-26-2010 08:50 AM

My mother didn't even try to feed me most vegetables. (Kind of a shame, since I like many of them now.)

One night, she tried to force stewed tomatoes down me. Wouldn't let me leave the dinner table for three hours. This was a night when we had company over, too.

Understand, she'd never even tried to get me to eat stewed tomatoes before. The idea was that when I'd been little, I'd liked fresh tomatoes for a while, and then I suddenly refused to eat them. So she figured I'd like them if I only tried them again.

The thing is, to this day I don't like cooked tomatoes. I use raw ones in my recipes and only add them in at the end to warm them up.

It wasn't until college that I even considered trying tomatoes again. They smelled wonderful in the dorm salad bar, and I finally tried fresh ones.

Looking back, I think she probably gave me one that was overripe or had a rotten spot one day, and that was what I didn't like. I was too small to know why it tasted bad, to explain to her, so all I could say was that it didn't taste right.

Lisanne 03-26-2010 09:03 AM

One more story. I was invited to a school friend's once for lunch. This was a bit awkward, as her parents happened to be physicians who had a joint practice together - and they turned out to be my mother's gynecologists! So of course my mother wanted me to be on my best behavior. And I was the kind of kid who wanted adults to like me, anyway.

So I get to my friend's house, and her mother says, "I hope you're hungry!" and I say, "Oh yes, I am!"

And she serves a 7-layer salad. I hated almost all vegetables at that point. Cucumbers and carrots were okay, but not all the rest of what was in that salad. I managed to separate every piece of shredded cheese from those veggies to try to get something in me, but there was no way to fake liking it. I kept hoping it wasn't the main course, but that was all there was.

And she kept saying, "I don't know why you wouldn't like it. I put everything in it." And there was no polite way to say I hated salad, hated all the things she put in it, so I just kept smiling bravely and assuring her I liked it but that I must not have been as hungry as I'd thought I was.

I always wondered if my mother put her up to it, thinking I might eat vegetables for a friend's parent. I mean, who seves salad (just vegetables, except for the bits of cheese) to a kid as the main lunch course?

chris_quilts 03-26-2010 09:27 AM

canned peas! Cannot stand the smell of them to this day and will not eat them not even if DH and DDs are having them for a veggie. I just eat something else.

Dragonfly Nana 03-26-2010 09:29 AM

Asparagus and oysters yuck! Still can't stand the smell of either.

jljquilter 03-26-2010 09:50 AM

Spam! Can not stand the smell. Husband likes it so if I am gone he will have it. I can tell the minute I walk in the house what he had for supper. Makes me want to open all the windows.

redkimba 03-26-2010 09:53 AM

Green beans. When I was around 5 years old, I had a stomach virus. That night my mother made dinner with green beans as a side dish. I still didn't feel good and said I couldn't eat them. My mother told me to eat them. I did and promptly became ill again on them (at the table no less).

I don't like green beans to this day. Don't like the taste or the smell.

same here..
my grandma served it once a week. i was lucky, she usually cooked up some bacon with it..it helped hide the flavor.

you know, alot of things my granda made or had us eat..i like now. Beets,Marmalade, cottage cheese, boiled dinner..just hated them growing up. my how we change!

BKinCO 03-26-2010 09:57 AM

Split Pea Soup. Still can't even look at that stuff! When I was young, probably about 4, my mother made that crap for dinner on Halloween night. Told me that I couldn't go trick or treating til I cleaned my bowl. (and, as an added threat, we would get our "leftover" food cold in the morning for breakfast if we didn't clean our plates) ..... I cried and cried and she would not give in. Finally she left the room and my teenaged brother took pity on me and ate it all.....

I swore I would never do that to my children.... and I never have!!!

redrummy 03-26-2010 10:15 AM

roast. I still do not like it, and everyone thinks I am crazy. As a kid, what was put on the table was eaten by all at the table. You did not complain, nor refuse to eat it. Mom would make pressure cooker meals, one being roast, potatoes and carrots. I loved the potatoes and carrots mashed up with the broth on them. But the meat- I didn't like. And even tho I cut it into small pieces, they seamed to grow as I chewed. I swear it was a huge hunk in my mouth and I couldn't swallow it. My sister caught me feeding it to the dog, I had to do her turn doing dishes so she wouldn't tell mom and dad. I still cook it, kids and hubby love it, but I do not eat the meat. Still love the potatoes and carrots mashed up with the broth on them.

mcdaniel023 03-26-2010 10:21 AM

LIMA BEANS!!!!!!! YUK, YUK, Double yuk!!!! Gag thinking about them. My grandpa had the rule that you cleaned your plate or you got it again for the next meal. Got it for lunch, got it for dinner and yep he put it back out with my breakfast. I told him he could serve it to me til Christmas
(this was in the summer) and I still wasn't going to eat it. He said just try one. Nope, didn't care if I ever got dessert again. He laughed and said that I was as stubborn as him and he hated them too. That's when I remembered he didn't have any on his plate for lunch. From that day on grandma could not put them on either one of our plates.

2wheelwoman 03-26-2010 10:54 AM

Wow, so many. My parents were the "eat it or else" types too, but served things like saurkraut (sp?) which I can't stand to even smell to this day, cooked cabbage, which I detest, stewed tomatoes, lima beans, and the worst of all things to try to feed a kid....pickled pigs feet. I had to sit at the table for hours, (usually until I'd get so upset I'd barf), and try to eat these not-kid-friendly means. And, I was so thin that I had to drink a special weight-gain drink. You'd of thought they'd figure out it was what I was being fed! I was also anemic, and the supposed cure was to eat liver three times a week. Talk about gagging. Will never touch it again. Yikes, this thread has brought up some bad memories...:-( Gotta go pet my new fabric.

Same here! I just happened to get the sniffles when Mom served liver and onions. I had to blow my nose a lot, and could manage to spit the liver into the tissue. I love onions - that was no problem.

She made beef heart one time that Dad happened to work late. My four sisters and I cut that heart up one side and then the next. Mom didn't make us eat it!! She would could tongue but would pickle that for my grandmother and uncle.

Vegies were no problem except for eggplant and zucchini - maybe we just had too much of them??

amma 03-26-2010 11:04 AM

Peas...LMBO
My youngest brother hated them... our kitchen table had a unused silverware drawer that was built in and it was right in front of where I always sat. It was perfect for stashing his peas...I didn't mind them, but I was not eating his too LOL One day mom decided to wipe out that drawer and I got busted big time LMBO Needles to say she turned the table around so that the drawer was in front of my dad after that :D:D:D

thequilterslink 03-26-2010 11:26 AM

Hated most veggies when i was a kid, especially green beans tho. whenever we had them, i would excuse myself from the table and hide in the bathroom until i heard them clearing the table, tried that at my older sisters house and when i came out the whole table was cleared ...except for my green beans. I was about 8-9 at the time, i cried and didn't have to eat them. Gotta love them big sisters lol

Margie 03-26-2010 11:50 AM

MEATSSSSSSS...which I still dont like and dont eat often..but LIVER would NOT touch and Turkey which I still hate...I occasionaly eat a few bites of chicken and like a BLT in summer when tomatoes are wonderful...but just dont like meat. If I ever think about what it was, DONE! If we go out to dinner and people are eating rare meat, I have to remember NOT to look at their plates..also fish with heads served on EWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

My grandson, loves all foods! he is such a pleasure to cook for! he loves all veggies..all of them. he eat liverwurst, all mexican food..scalloped potatoes..whatever.
he is going to be 3 in july. and i hope he stays this way. one of my kids was a picky eater. we only made her try the food. never forced her. and now,she eats pretty much everything...

yourstrulyquilts 03-26-2010 12:05 PM

[quote]Yikes, this thread has brought up some bad memories.]/quote

Didn't mean to bring up bad memories. We all have gone through it, with one or ten foods, most of which we cannot eat even today. I have found, tho, that cooked differently, some are very good. I like peas, now, but I grow them myself and freeze them and cook them just a little, not to death! Same with cabbage. I like it "fried". Small bacon bits and stir fry the chopped cabbage until just barely cooked. Even my kids liked that one.
I think people cooked food to death back then, because not everyone had refrigerators to keep stuff from spoiling. When I was little, we had a "cooler", a pantry on the North side of the house. I never remember having spoiled milk, but a quarter in a gallon will keep it from spoiling. And....we had fresh milk, straight from the cow to the table.

watterstide 03-26-2010 12:44 PM

eeewwwwww fresh milk..now that gives me shudders! grandma had a milk man, she loved the friggin cream on top, looked like spoiled milk! we hated seeing that on our cornflakes!

retired teacher 03-26-2010 12:49 PM

I hate it when adults try to force kids to eat. As a teacher I showed more than one child how to hide what they hated it their milk carton.

yourstrulyquilts 03-26-2010 12:53 PM

I think forcing children to eat what they hate can cause eating disorders in young teens, and on into adult life.

retired teacher 03-26-2010 01:18 PM

You are so right. I think it is just plain cruel!

MadQuilter 03-26-2010 02:01 PM

One time, my mom made cream of asparagus soup. I told her I couldn't eat it. I NEVER said that before to ANY crappy thing the woman set in front of me. So she had to pull the power play. I sat in front of the soup while everyone else had the full dinner.
When the family had Sunday afternoon cake, I got reheated soup. When the family had supper - you guessed it, reheated soup. I finally gave in, ate the soup and promptly projectile vomited through the entire house. Served her right!

Jim's Gem 03-26-2010 02:48 PM

Liver!! GAG!!!!!!!

smell of liver and onions made me sick

I'm with you on this, except when a kid refuses ALL vegetables and ALL fruits. Or everything except junk food. Sure, parents should try different things, but you also have to make sure the kid gets nourished, and with regular food, not supplemental shakes and things.

As for liver, lol, I liked it just fine - when my mom made it. I tried making it once myself and couldn't tell whether I'd made it wrong or just didn't like it any more, but a friend who loved liver & onions ate all four portions that I cooked, so I guess I did it right. (Some guys will eat anything.)

Happily, I never got forced to eat peas, because my mother didn't like them, either.

retired teacher 03-26-2010 03:57 PM

Lisaanne. I stand corrected. As a teacher I didn't like the lunchroom monitors who would not let gets go until they had tried everything served them. When I was cooking for my children I made sure they got enough of the good stuff before they were allowed limited desserts or treats. I liked liver too. My Mom sure was a great cook1

Chasing Hawk 03-26-2010 04:46 PM

Nothing, we ate what was put in front of us. Besides Dad never fed us anything he didn't like.

That's what we had for dinner last night. Being anemic I hate taking pills so I get my iron elsewhere.

raptureready 03-26-2010 05:12 PM

Some of you probably already know the story but mine was salmon patties.

But for those of us who don't know the story, do tell!

Did anyone watch Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution on TV tonight? What a hard situation he's up against! But honestly, how could he expect the kids to choose roast chicken and celery sticks over pizza? And did you notice the meal they finally liked was fajitas - good stuff, but very similar in the kids' eyes to the junk food they're used to.

I loved the teacher who went out and got vegetables to teach her class what they were.

CAROLJ 03-26-2010 06:26 PM

Eggs, then jello, they feel nasty in the mouth!

I grew up on fresh milk and the cream just got mixed in unless my dad wanted it for his coffee. Now, it's "bad" for you b/c it's not homogenized and anitbiotics out the wazoo not is it pasteurized. I miss real whole milk and would drink it again in a heartbeat.

littlehud 03-26-2010 07:08 PM

I hated spinach as a kid. My moms policy was you ate everything on your plate or you stayed there til you did. I would mix my spinach in my mashed potatoes and choke it down that way. Now I love spinach. My oldest DD would hide her peas under her plate and then go hide so she didn't have to eat them. She still hates peas.

Honey 03-26-2010 09:52 PM

When I was little, I would not touch coliflower. Wouldn't taste it, wouldn't hardly look at it. Why, you might ask. One of my older brothers told me it wasn't really a vegetable, but a brain! I was much older before I got that image out of my head. Now I love it cooked or raw. When my mom served something new, we had to try it, but were never forced to eat something we really didn't like. My mom hated oatmeal and was forced to eat it every morning, so she always swore she would never do that to us and she didn't. Yes, we ate what was on the table, but she really tried to make stuff that everyone could at least tolerate. But then none of us were really picky eaters, either.

LOL, a brain, that's hilarious!

Cauliflower was one thing my mother never even had me try. I don't think she even made it when we had meals together. She always kind of ate it privately. Which was fine with me, because to me cauliflower (and broccoli) looked like some kind of alien life form, like it didn't even come from this Earth.

And now? They're two of my favorite vegetables.
