I have one son with eczema so I have always bought the "free" kind of detergents, usually tide.

DH, the coupon king of America, bought the Arm & Hammer kind (probably free) and now younger son broke out everywhere his freshly laundered shirt touched.
so, what works for you?

I'm afraid maybe the products have changed. we don't use fabric softener or dryer sheets either--just dryer balls.

mcdaniel023 10-10-2011 03:23 PM

All, free and clear, works for me.

Lisanne 10-10-2011 03:47 PM

I used to use Arm & Hammer powdered. I needed the scent-free kind, and I was fine with it.

I switched to All, the scent, etc.-free kind, the liquid, while traveling and like that even better, because there's no airborne powder to bother me.

I don't know that my skin is all that sensitive to detergents, though, so I can't say how it works for eczema (sp?).

lisainmo 10-10-2011 03:52 PM

I use Tide with bleach..but many are allergic to that so would not recommend that for you.

AngieS 10-10-2011 04:00 PM

First I have to say that I love the idea that your DH is the coupon KING! Mine is the SPENDING KING! I try to save while he blows it left and right but thinks it should ALL still be there when he wants to buy a big item!

We use TIDE but haven't ever had any trouble. Sorry that you all are going through this. I hope your DS feels better soon.

Dolphyngyrl 10-10-2011 04:00 PM

melaleuca scent free. Their fabric softeners don't bother me either and they have scent. I break out to the store bought stuff!!!!

Quiltbeagle 10-10-2011 04:08 PM

I use Arm & Hammer but their scent free type is getting harder to find around here. If I can't find it I get ERA Unscented, and if I can't find that I'll get Purex scent free. I have the ingredients to make my own liquid detergent (which will be scent and dye free), I just need to find the time to make it!

Murphy 10-10-2011 04:13 PM

I use Tide; no problems. If I change we have problems. Tide is the one for us (smile).

marknfran 10-10-2011 04:13 PM

Eczema runs in our family also. We use the Tide (no bleach) no scent and also with febreeze. We have had no problems.

Gramie bj 10-10-2011 04:14 PM

I use all sent free liquid Free And Clear our water is so hard here we have to use liquid.

KarenR 10-10-2011 04:14 PM

Tide for me

Dawn Hendrix 10-10-2011 04:17 PM

Our son also has eczema.. we tried one time to change detergents ... never again.. same with our daughter.... needless to say they are stuck with TIDE for the rest of there lives. Doc told us if it aint broke don't fix it.

QuiltnNan 10-10-2011 04:17 PM

for me, it's the fragrance that is a problem. so i buy any generic for the price and making sure it doesn't have a fragrance.

luvTooQuilt 10-10-2011 04:21 PM

Since the day my daughter was born - years and years ago- Ive been using ALL FREE for just her clothes, blankets and sheets- basically anything that was going to be in contact with her.. I still use it today.. never found a reason to change it..

I use Gain, Era or Tide for hubby and I..

And we all use downy..

katier825 10-10-2011 04:38 PM

I was very disappointed that they have added some scent to the Arm & Hammer...hello! What do they think the irritating part is anyway! I can still find some of the unscented locally. When I can't find it, I use other unscented soaps. I also use the Downy softner that is free of dyes/purfumes.

Side note...I also had eczema really bad...my skin was so dry it would crack and bleed. None of the prescription meds helped. My BIL saw an ad for a product called Freederm and I tried it. On their website, it looks too good to be true, but I figured for the small amount of money to try it it was worth a shot. It worked for me! There was a noticeable difference in just a couple of days. I use it 2x a day and I very rarely have a problem with it now. I've been using it for several years now. Not affiliated, just a very satisfied customer...the website is http://www.freederm.com/

QUILTNMO 10-10-2011 05:13 PM

i have used tide for over 45 years works for us

RkayD 10-10-2011 05:16 PM

I've been making my own soap & softener. I also ran across a blog where she used a tin foil ball in the dryer instead of softener. I may try that. One of my girls gets sensitive to laundry soap..she hasn't had an issue with my homemade stuff.

Chasing Hawk 10-10-2011 05:31 PM

Pyrex

I am allergic to the others.

QuiltnLady1 10-10-2011 05:35 PM

I had to use Dreft and Ivory for my daughter because she would break out with anything else (heavens -- that was over 35 years ago). Now she and we use the Kirkland HE liquid that has no scent.

Jennifer22206 10-10-2011 06:04 PM

We use Ivory Snow. Soft enough for babies (even better than Dreft!)

Love it.

I'm so allergic to Tide it's not even funny. It's so bad I can't even walk down the aisle without itching.

tsnana2000 10-10-2011 06:11 PM

The scent is what gets me. I get a headache walking down the detergent aisle. I use all free and clear. I didn't know Downy had scent free fabric softener. Might have to try it.

fayzer 10-10-2011 06:23 PM

Melaleuca scent free. This stuff is so concentrated that a bottle lasts for months. I am not a dealer for Melalecca, just a well satisfied customer.

Painiacs 10-10-2011 06:23 PM

DH and dd have severe excema! Use free soaps add vinegar to rinse. Gets any leftover soap ECt out! His is so bad right now he has bandages on both legs from knees down! His is weeping, sores itching! Awful!

prairiequeen 10-10-2011 06:41 PM

If you can possibly put some vinegar in the rinse cycle, that should get rid of the itching. It gets all the extra soap out of the clothes. I had to do that for my kids years ago. It works well. I just added a quarter cup or more, and it got rid of all the residue from the soap.

auntpiggylpn 10-10-2011 07:00 PM

I have really sensitive skin and I used to use the Arm & Hammer exclusively. Unfortunately, I didn't feel like it cleaned my clothes well enough. I now use tide with bleach alternative with no problems. I did find that fabric softners were often the guilty culprit when I would have an outbreak. I can only use Downy. I am very careful with my body soaps too. Used to use only Neutrogenia but am now able to use only Oil of Olay body washes.

gmaybee 10-10-2011 07:10 PM

I make my own with Arm and Hammer washing soda, 20 Muleteam Borax, and Fels-naptha bar soap. The recipe makes 2 gallons at a time.

May in Jersey 10-10-2011 07:16 PM

Don't use one brand all the time, All, Purex, Arm & Hammer and once in awhile store brand. Never did like Tide, scent got to me. I don't use softeners either, dryer does a good job, towels come out nice and fluffy and clothes don't have static.

Sorry to hear that so many have skin problems, sounds painful.

Mariposa 10-10-2011 07:17 PM

I use liquid Ecos from Costco for laundry soap. For rinse, I use a downy ball filled with some white vinegar. Works great!
Vinegar is a great fabric softener, and no smell either! :)

For body products, I use the Aloe Vera stuff at The Body Shop. Has no scent added.

hensandhollyhocks 10-10-2011 07:58 PM

My daughter and I like All.

wanda lou 10-10-2011 08:09 PM

ALL free and clear.

Me too.Hubby has exema and dandruff, bad. We've bought little $10.00 bottles of tar shampoo etc over the yrs and finaly I started making my own laundry soap and shampoo.I use the Borax,Fels naptha, and super washing soda for laundry in the 5 gallon bucket.Lasts for months if not a year. And the shampoo is store bought from Sally's,but I add neem oil to it.I also buy the foot/elbow cream that's thick in the short fat jar in the foot section at walmart, and add neem oil to it too.He uses it daily and has no problems any more.I also added neem oil to the shower body soap.It kills all that kind of stuff.Tee tree oil does the same. It's antibacterial, antibiotic, antifungus, etc.Kills all kinds of things.I also use it in my toothpaste.

sandilee 10-11-2011 02:40 AM

Liquid Woolite or Liquid Wisk.

We have soft water so all I need is a dab.

Last week our daughter broke out in a rash all over. She was using Liquid Tide and her doctor said it was an irritation with laundry soap. Doctor told her to use Dreft.

thseabreze 10-11-2011 02:55 AM

All free & clear, have used it for many years....and no fabric softeners, ....

Tropical 10-11-2011 03:09 AM

I use Seventh Generation Free and Clear 2X Concentrated Laundry Detergent. It can be used in both regular and High Efficency washers. I use it because I have Severe Multiple Chemical Sensitivities and am allergic to most everything, too. It works really well for me.

I'm sorry to hear about your son's eczema. One of my DGD was just diagnosed with it. I hope you find something that works for you. :)

shnnn 10-11-2011 03:16 AM

We use either Tide or homemade soap. Every time I switch brands of soap hubby gets itchy and rashy. After a couple days it doesn't bother him any more -- except for Arm & Hammer, I can't use that at all.

Noiseynana 10-11-2011 03:34 AM

I make my own. Never had any problems with any of it.
