Quilting and gardening are equal in my hobbies, but I also used to do crochet, knit (once), paint garden stones, sew pillows (mostly quilted ones), and Interior Decorate. I took a course in the Interior decorating just so I could redo my own house. I also paint Holiday wooden yard art (hubby draws the grid on wood, I draw and then he cuts out and I sand and paint)

I made the ghost and cat many yrs ago

I made the "ghost" and skeleton

I made the stacked pumpkins - the eyes in some are knots in the wood

I've done quite a few different things, did silversmithing for awhile and made jewelry. I had a stained glass shop in IN with my girlfriend, gave classes, made stained glass for people and went to art shows to sell our things, that was fun. I attempted to quilt in the early 90's but that didn't last long. Now I'm starting again and I really love it, just not very good at it.

RatherB Quilting 06-17-2010 02:34 PM

You mean there are hobbies other than quilting?

I have tried many of the other hobbies...drawing, painting, scrapbooking, knitting, crochet, cross stitch, soft sculpture, dollmaking, teddy bear making (even had my own teddy bear business)...none of them stuck really. Quilting is my passion and my poison. It is what makes my world go 'round. I can honestly say that I don't really have any other hobbies. (although, I would like to give stained glass a go someday. I've always talked about making stained glass inserts for my kitchen cupboards when we finally build our house!)
:)

fluffbug95 06-17-2010 03:14 PM

Also with quilting, I love to go
4-Wheeling, Ride Dirtbikes, play on round bales in pastures at my friends house, play the computer, go running, play soccer, play tennis, hanging out with my friends, there are so many more, I just can't think of them right now. :)

maryb119 06-17-2010 03:24 PM

I knit, crochet and needlepoint. I like to read too.

pstoner 06-17-2010 03:28 PM

My hobby is working (LOL), but seriously...I crave granite, paint stones, gardening, cross stitch and refinish antique farm objects...i.e. iron kettle, cream seperators, antique bathtubs. I think that's it.

MissM 06-17-2010 05:09 PM

I like to do basket weaving, prim doll making, cross stitching, painting, gardening, junking, knitting, pine needle baskets, general sewing, jewelry, and of course now quilting. :-D

DebbyT 06-17-2010 05:25 PM

My #1 passion is sewing. #2 is woodworking. #3 is gardening. I also knit, crochet, paint, cook. I prefer to do things myself rather than pay for something someone else made.

sunflower126 06-17-2010 05:46 PM

Besides quilting which is my newest hobby, I do scrapbooking, cardmaking and stamping, some jewelery making, I can knit but find it boring, used to love counted cross stitch but it's too hard for me to see now and it takes too long too. Used to do a lot of sewing (clothing) and I can't forget reading-usually 1-2 books a week and I like photography but really am an amatuer.

texas granny 06-17-2010 06:30 PM

Besides quilting and cooking and gardening. I also grow African violets. At one time I grew showed and judged violets.I did the convention and ran the tours.
Love traveling in the us. In my cooking I love to bake and decorate cakes. I love to bake bread. Make home made candy at Christmas.

littlehud 06-17-2010 06:41 PM

I sew, knit, crochet and love to read. Quilting has taken over most of my time now.

hazeljane 06-17-2010 06:50 PM

Not sure it is a hobby anymore- more like a 2nd full time job, but Jim and I run a small non-profit Italian Greyhound rescue in Tulsa, which means there are always between 9 and 12 (average) dogs in the house, in various states of socialization.

I am also a voracious reader, and love to cook and bake. I knit when I just want to do something comforting, without having to think about it.

dotcomdtcm 06-17-2010 07:37 PM

My main activity is quilting but I have also become interested in researching my family history. There is Mom's side, Dad's side, and ex-husband's too. Mom came here from Brazil in 1927. Last winter, my youngest and I went there to learn more about immigration. Mom's family came to Brazil from Austria. Fascinating!

Beth33 06-18-2010 02:36 AM

First love is microbiology, I collect and play with bacteria. (And am still alive all these years, go figure LOL) I love to do computer programming, but it's time intensive so don't do much anymore. Sometimes sew, knit, crochet, do counted cross-stitch and plastic canvas. Have 2 freshwater tropical aquariums. Just started quilting.

stitchinwitch 06-18-2010 03:10 AM

Maybe everyone could post their "other hobby pictures" for everyone to see?

sueisallaboutquilts 06-18-2010 05:44 AM

Rosy, what a fun topic!!!
There are 3 things that jump to my mind as favs:
Quilting, reading, downloading music.
I have several Ipods and have my favorite audiobooks and songs on them. I am a computer nut- never dreamed I would be.
Constantly online it seems and more and more on this board!
I love it so much!!!
I also love to knit when the mood hits. I love doing crossword puzzles. I love watching the Yankees all season- I rarely miss a game!!
My husband and I love antiques and used to collect but now are getting to the point where we don't have any more room for things!!!
I could go on and on but I won't........ You get the picture!
I used to love growing African violets but one of my cats ate the flowers as soon as they bloomed :(
She's a keeper so the violets will return someday!!! I loved starting new ones from the originals.
Oh, another thing I love to do is dry flowers in silica gel- LOL I'm still writing!!!!!!!!!! Ok, DONE!!! :D

crleslie 06-18-2010 06:04 AM

I work full time and It's our family business so it's not a 9-5 job more like 8-7 so time is scarce at this point in my life but my 2 hobbies right now are quilting and as always reading. I also like to run but that's more a stress release thing where quilting and reading are an escape. But, I have a list of "when I have time and money" things. I want to take a photography course, and when the first son gets engaged I already told DH that we are taking a dancing class, then when I find out I'm going to be a grandmother I want to take a candy making class and a cake making class. Then, I'd like to go back to take more intense piano lessons (took them for yrs as a kid but never was serious about it) Oh, and I want to take a stained glass course. And, I have a whole list of places I want to travel to. Too much to squeeze in in a lifetime, huh? Oh, and I really want private golf lessons too so I can really enjoy golfing as a hobby!

granniebj 06-18-2010 06:08 AM

I've tried lots of stuff! The things I truely enjoy are quilting, crocheting, cross stitch, scarapbooking, and reading. Right now I'm only quilting....just can't put it down! Since I babysit every day...theres not enough time to do all I want.

ladydi64 06-18-2010 06:58 AM

Now that I have retired, quilting will be my No. 1 project since we have 2 kings, 4 queens and 4 twin size beds to cover. I also knit, crochet and do needle point pillows. As soon as i figure out how to get pictures from my new camera into my computer, I will post some of my projects here.

bstanbro 06-18-2010 07:07 AM

Photography and cooking. I'd like to incorporate photography and quilting into one project some time, but so far I haven't been brave enough.

Roberta 06-18-2010 07:15 AM

I used to show our Borzoi at dog shows. Now that they are all retired, I knit some and garden in the summer. I also love stamped cross stitch projects.

MissyGirl 06-18-2010 07:26 AM

I love to blog!

CraftsByRobin 06-18-2010 08:11 AM

I do jewelry, make candles, paint ceramics ... tried crocheting and knitting ... but want to get more into it but can't get the hang of it ...I've covered photo albums as gifts ... crocheted fun fur on flip flops ... done a bit of hand embroidery ... made wreaths for Christmas and fall ...

I love any and all crafts ... I think I've tried out various ... I've even tried painting and pastels ... not an artist for sure ... my problem is I know enough to try it and be dangerous ... but nothing with great skill.

I want to learn how to use polymer clay to make little statues, ornaments, and beads ... but my first love is quilting and I've been wanting to learn it for a LONG LONG TIME!!!

I wish some of you all lived closer to me ... so I could learn some of these crafts you speak of :D

woody1229 06-18-2010 09:29 AM

Quilting and sewing are my hobby passions, but I am also a huge, lifelong fan of baseball - Angels season ticket holder for over 40 years! I'm a professional script reader for the movie studios, but I still like to read in my spare time. After all those silly screenplays, I love to read history. Abe Lincoln in particular.

Julia 06-18-2010 11:02 AM

Quilting, Genealogy, Sewing, Genealogy, Beading, Genealogy,
Cross Stich, Genealogy, China Painting, Genealogy. and back to quilting.
Too old to start anything new, but love what I do.

Boston1954 06-18-2010 11:37 AM

Before I took up quilting, I was into cross stitching. I did that for 17 years, then suddenly decided that pictures on the wall was not as important as something to keep you warm.

I also love writing poetry, 201 so far. And I an into photography, collecting blue glassware, and movies.

horsefeather41 06-18-2010 12:00 PM

I've done all sorts of things i used to sew cloths for 4 girls til they didn't want to wear homemade cloths anymore. then went to making dolls. if it has to do with a needle i've done it,
except quilting and now thats where i'm at. so onward

karendenice 06-18-2010 01:41 PM

Sew little time, sew much to do. :D
I did oil painting and drwaing as a kid. Am sorry I didn't do more with it, bust was just too much $.
I did string art, and needlepoint an high school.
Taught myself to crochet after marriage (found a baby blanket pattern and fell in love with it). Also did some needlepont that I got from Greece on a trip. Cross-stitched for over30 yrs. Got kinda bored with is so I started doing petie point, working on 40-count silk gauze with silk floss (still do that). Started knitting and quilting in 1997. Made three quilt tops, quilted one wall hanging (not binding). Then I put the 2 big and 1 little quilt away and kept on knitting. Have knit alot of afghans, shawls and scarves ( my daughter always wants a new scarf for herself or one of her friends). Am worjing on knitting alot of socks and do alot of quilting for Christmas presents. The first pair of socks I kept for myself. They are the most comfortable and warm socks that I have ever had. I also read ALOT. I have over 1000 books and counting. Have to keep them on a spreadsheet to keep track of the ones that I have read. I am also going to start helping out The Linus Project. Am excited about that.
Had 1 horse, 3 dogs 2 parakeets, and one ski boat when I was married. But now that I have gotten older and daughter is grown and gone I have alot of time on my hands. Work on all the above and spend ALOT of TIME on the computer.

Betty J 06-18-2010 03:43 PM

Sew little time So Much to do......my motto also.

I love all kinds of sewing, which includes, Quilting & patchwork, bag making, gifts, applique & dressmaking. As well I crochet, knit, and make mohair teddy bears, cloth dolls and Christmas decorations

I have been in the machine embroidery hole for several years now as well.

I have been a doll collector for 35years, the main drawcard for me was dressing the dolls. I love the period dressing.

I used to do cake decorating & candy Easter egg making, but no time for that now. Also we are still self employed and live on 5 acres, so there is never any spare time.

Betty J

My #1 is quilting (absolutely hooked), making clothes for new granddaughter, cooking (making homemade bread is my favorite), and gardening - flower and veggie.

Marjpf 06-18-2010 03:54 PM

This is such a great thread. I feel like I know everyone a bit better now. So many talented people on this board! My other hobbies are needlepoint, cross stitch, occasionally I'll knit, crochet or needle tatting. I really like wood turning and making pens, but haven't had much time for it lately. I joke that doing laundry and cleaning the house must be my favorite "hobby" since I do so much of it. My second best love after quilting is reading.

Alondra 06-18-2010 04:14 PM

Genealogy. If I'm not quilting, my nose is buried in some dusty old records in some dusty old courthouse. :)

RugosaB 06-18-2010 04:50 PM

Until I was in a car accident, my other 'hobby' was raising, showing and lure coursing (a sport they're involved in) basenjis (barkless dogs) Now, life has changed and in true quilter fashion, I'm changing with it, dealing with whatever the world decides to throw at me

dublb 06-18-2010 06:48 PM

Along with Quilting, I like reading, gardening (both veggie,& flowers)jelly making, photography (very amateur sp?). I've recently been mentoring a young girl who's learning to sew & garden. She also enjoys photography. She wants to learn to tie dye so I guess we'll learn that together.

My first love is growing orchids and from this I have turned to making purses with orchid designs, either with applique or hand embroideried orchids. I am learning about quilting from this wonderful board in order to make my purses more interesting. When people think about orchids, they picture ones like the moth orchids (Phalaenopsis) or the corsage orchids (Cattleya), but orchids are a very diverse family and there are so many different species that you might not recognise them as orchids. Here are a couple different ones I grow.

Phalaenopis gibbosa (Looks like an Easter Bunny to me.)
