I ask this because in my family My Mom can make clothing, My Sister can knit and I quilt. My oldest DS does artistic drawings and my DD could too if she would work at it. My DH could have been a musician but gave it up when the kids came along, he can also can draw and paint art. We are still waiting to see what talent little man will have other than destroying the livingroom. LOL!!

So what talents are in your family? I would like to hear about them.

BluegrassGurl 01-17-2011 09:55 PM

I play the fiddle and piano. I enjoy doing anything crafty (painting, cross-stitch, crochet, =of course= quilting.) My DH is a blacksmith and makes beautiful custom knives and iron work (hammered on an anvil). My DS writes poetry and is a talented graphic artist. My DD bakes/creates cakes for all occassions. My Dad plays the guitar. Two of my brothers play guitar, mandolin, banjo and fiddle. One of my sisters plays the mandolin and piano. We all sing (gospel). My paternal grandfather was a fiddler who played <I am told> at many barn dances. He also made baskets and walked 10 miles <covered from head to toe in baskets> to sell them in "town". I have truly been blessed. Thanks for asking.

cathyvv 01-17-2011 10:10 PM

I play the radio! And I'm a fabulous grandmother - at least I think I am since the grandkids keep coming back to visit and are in no hurry to leave.

My Mom was good at anything she put her mind to. She re-did the bathroom - tiling and all, built benches, quilted, made clothing, crocheted, knitted. The words "I can't" were not in her vocabulary.

My Dad was mathematically gifted (at least from my point of view), loved electronics, fixed cars...

My DH is a jack of all trades. Loves old radios and 45 record players (remember them?), collects them and fixes them up. He wrote a collectors book on 45 record players, too. And he makes me laugh!

My youngest daughter is into writing, but hasn't published anything yet (except on the internet). She was an elite level soccer player (not olympics, but close), and has a memory that you wouldn't believe.

My older daughter is into photography and scrap booking. She spends tons of time on it. She is a 'foodie' and loves to cook. She and I are polar opposites when it comes to cooking...

My son is a sweet, but gruff nurse. He seems to have a way with the folks in the nursing home. I think it's because his voice is just naturally loud, so the hard of hearing patients can hear him!

My grandkids have a talent for making me laugh. Sometimes I think that is the most important talent of all!

An aunt and my grandmother sewed clothes (they've passed away), my mom still sews & knits (and taught my sisters and I to knit & sew).
My parents like in Alaska, my mom made us all down coats & snowpants, and she knit tons of mittens and sweaters.
One sister plays the organ in her church, another sister plays the harp and piano, I used to play the flute. My brother is an excellent carpenter, he also does etched and frosted glass. My parents used to reupholster furniture (as a hobby). My aunt embroidered and crocheted too.
My late grandfather did leaded stain glass after he retired.
My Dad and all four of "us kids" learned to fly airplanes. My dad repairs trucks, all sizes, just because he wants to.
Thanks for making me think about what we all do.

Born2Sew 01-17-2011 10:22 PM

My Mom plays both the piano and organ. I play the piano.
We also sing. Music has been a big part of my life, especially growing up. I sang my first solo at age 4 in church. Hubby is also a jack of all trades. My son pretty much is as well. DD is an excellent cook, and photographer.
She is much more artistic than I am. I gave up crocheting because of the arthritus in my hands.

noveltyjunkie 01-17-2011 10:23 PM

My mother can do wonders with a sewing machine and is particularly good at making clothes. She also did most of the stuff in the house herself over the years, from making curtains to installing additional power points and carpentry. The latter were more from necessity than particular wish on her part- Dad couldn't change a light bulb, much less anything more complex! I was very pleasantly surpprised when I got married to discover that DIY did not have to feature in my role profile unless I wanted it to- MY DH is very handy around the house.

My mother and siblings are all good at drawing. My sister and brother are wonderful with making small "fiddly" things- machines or jewerly or other things as circumstances require.

None of us are musical, sadly, although I love to sing.

Chasing Hawk 01-17-2011 10:23 PM

My son and two daughters can drawing like there is no tomorrow. My Mom hand embroiders and sews clothes. My cousin makes Native American crafts.

And my older brother can turn into an a** at the drop of a hat.....LOL

debbieumphress 01-17-2011 10:26 PM

Well, my sister and I both play piano.
I took band 8 years and played all the reed instruments, mainly clarinet and oboe. Loved it.
I sew, crochet, cross stitch, quilt, knit, paint, and whatever else I put my mind too. ANd therefore so do all the women in my family. WE all learned together. I make dolls too. Lots of talented ladies on here.
I am learning Stain glass next month at the Artisan Mall. SHould be fun. Plan to do quilting ones. We'll see how that goes.

Qbee 01-17-2011 10:31 PM

Hmmm....my grandmother could sew, quilt, tat and make some jams that made your mouth water....LOL :D
My mom never got into any crafts really but I can remember her painting by numbers for awhile...LOL :D
My son is a Music Major and plays the trumpet and my duaghter can make music with words...she really can write beautifully and cooks wonderfully!

Jim 01-17-2011 11:38 PM

my wife can play violin, draw and paint and does all the quilting for our household and others....I draw paint sew anything and we both garden like maniacs

leatheflea 01-18-2011 04:14 AM

My eldest son is a musician, guitar, banjo, piano, harmonica. And he sings, gets that from me and my family. My father is an amazing singer. My mothers family were traveling gospel singers. My youngest son is a jewler, well wanna be right now, he starts his first jewling class next year during his senior year in high school. the local vocational school has set up the program just for him. He'll be the only student. My daughter is an artist but doesnt know it yet. She has designed some beautiful tatoos. Yep thats right tatoos. I myself dont care for tatoos but her work is really good. Wish she would do something with her drawing talent, shes deliving pizzas. And my honey he can do anything, right now hes building a canoe out of 3/4" x 17' strips of wood. Its very much like quilting, if you get that little bit off on your seams it adds up to a big mistake.

AgapeStitches 01-18-2011 04:33 AM

My DH preaches, plays and fixes guitars, sings, cooks. My oldest DD sings, youngest DD can draw and sing, oldest DS is learning to play guitar and sings, youngest DS plays basketball and baseball (don't know if he can sing because I haven't heard him doing it). I sing, sew clothes, crafts, quilt, and mime. My mom is very crafty and she can sew. My sis loves and rescues dogs (she has a boxer now that has adopted her). One BIL plays guitar and drums, another plays the sax and does magic tricks with cards, the other is just goofy. My nephew plays sax and can learn new songs fast. Ny niece, well she hasn't found her niche yet, but she is really good at being a pain in the tushie most of the time. My Grandpa preaches, teaches, sings, plays guitar, made cabinets/clocks, brick mason, electrician, mechanic, and tailor. My Grandma used to sew, now she crochets and cooks, and prays for all of us daily. My SIL, he preaches, teaches, sings, is a good writer, a good listener and very good to my oldest daughter. He's also a good friend.

QuiltingGrannie 01-18-2011 04:45 AM

I sew, quilt, crochet, glass etching, wood burning, painting, decorating, photography, and scrapbooking. I also write - poetry, and books (that aren't published).I used to cross stitch.
My father was an artist - drawing, charcoal, and wood carving.
My mother was a seamstress, and crocheted
My sister paints (Like tole painting)
My cousin is an artist, retired -painting.
My daughter sews and quilts(some), and is good with tools - fixing things.
My son-in-law cooks and bakes - but don't give him a tool!
My son does glass etching, is very mechanical (Motorcycle mechanic).
My daughter-in-law is doing a great job teaching my granddaughter. GD can talk some in several languages already.
My husband cooks and has creative ideas for quilt designs!
My granddaughter (age 4 1/2) likes to draw, and cook.
My grandmother crocheted.
My aunt was a writer.

lauriejo 01-18-2011 04:48 AM

My mom was a wonderful artist. She could paint, did amazing needlework, quilted of course, and crocheted. My dad was a professional photographer in his youth, now he is mostly a pain in the you know what. Besides learning to quilt, I also do regular sewing, needlework, photography, knitting and I have done a little jewelry making. My DH is Mr Fix-it, he does a little bit of woodcarving and leatherwork. Now he wants to learn to do chain maille. My DS plays trumpet, mellophone and french horn (while marching which I find amazing being a klutz). He also thought learning Japanese was fun and not hard at all????? He has a very quirky artistic style, which I wish he would continue to pursue. And while in Japan we discovered he is a budding photographer.

Becky Crafts 01-18-2011 05:09 AM

My DH is good at anything he puts his mind to. He is a great cook, is good with techno stuff, enjoys working with wood & solving problems. I am left-handed & have taught myself to do most crafts. I knit, bake, sew about anything, have designed my own cloth doll & teddy bear patterns, have braided a rug, hooked rugs in kits, work with scroll saw & wood in general. Looking forward to making wooden puzzles for the kids for next Christmas. I'm not good at crochet, but can make the general stitches. Our neighbors tell us visiting us is like visiting Santa's Workshop all year 'round. LOL

cjomomma 01-18-2011 05:18 AM

Thank you for the wonderful replies. I enjoyed reading all of them. So I am beginning to think that quilters come from artistic back grounds. I forgot to mention that my Dad is a mechanic and carpenter. He has almost completely remodeled their home. My Brother is a wonderful drawer(it that even a word?), but too lazy too keep it up. He is one of those that likes to live off of other ppl. Thank goodness he is still in Ca. I also sing, as a teenager I was in a quartet and we used to go to singing contests. I sung in the church choir and high school choir. I always wanted to be a famous singer but alas the stage fright got the best of me as I got older.

Riversong 01-18-2011 05:43 AM

I play piano, guitar, fiddle, like BluegrassGurl..love bluegrass music, mostly do gospel too.I bake and have won several ribbons on breads, but that was several years ago.Not able to do all that anymore.I also make homemade noodles, have made cottage cheese and milked many a cow.(good old days my foot!)

hazeljane 01-18-2011 06:27 AM

One of my brothers makes guitars and is a phenomenal artist in wood. He is also an amazing musician and songwriter. My youngest brother is also an amazing musician and singer, as well as rebuilder of motor bikes. My oldest brother is a painter and artist, with paintings in: The Art Museum of Dallas, both MoMAs (CA and NY), a museum in Wichita, Brooklyn Museum of Art, blah blah blah. He just won a very prestigious prize- he will living and painting for 3 months in Monet's Garden in France!

You can see his work at http://www.alexanderandbonin.com/art.../benedict.html

My daughter is an amazing pastry chef and gourmet cook.

Panther Creek Quilting 01-18-2011 07:36 AM

Well I quilt, crochet, taught myself to knit, tat, sew clothes, scrapbook and love to cook. My mother and father both possessed the "I can do anything gene" Mom played the piano and sang, she crocheted and was a seamstress (no quilting)and she was a wonderful cook. Dad can fix anything under the sun. He is a farmer and so this comes in handy. Like he completly rebuilt a tractor with just a parts book for reference. That trade has rubbed off on my brother who also from a very young age could rebuild and repair anything. In fact he just built a 7500 square foot house entirely by himself. He also brews home beer and has won several prestigious awards.

Both grandmas were great cooks and also great at any sewing and handwork you placed in front of them.

I think that everyone has special talents, it is all in how you look at it......That said I think my husbands talent is watching the same movie 50 times and still finding entertainment in it. Someone needs to come get the tools from my house as he is fairly dangerous with them!

I come from a musical family. My DM played the guitar like a dream and sang. She could also draw very well! My DF plays the banjo, sings and talks nonstop! My youngest sister sings, plays the accordion and quilts. Another sister is multi talented and seems to be able to do whatever she sets her mind too. She draws and paints beautifully, taught herself to play the piano and has a wonderful singing voice.
I play the guitar, sing and write songs. I also paint, crochet, do upholstery, sew, quilt and can do almost any craft type thing I try.
We were raised with the can do attitude and a strong work ethic. Both have served me well. :-D

dpparris 01-18-2011 08:21 AM

I do counted cross stitch, crochet, and quilt.
My mother quilts.
My dad does woodworking.
My husband best talent is cleaning (Yes he cleans most of the house, the only thing I have to do is laundry and cooking). He is disabled and still does all this to help me.
I am so BLESSED to have this wonderful man.
My sister sings. (I can sing as well, just don't listen, I said I could sing, it's just not beautiful music).

mrs theo 01-18-2011 09:08 AM

My DH is very musical. He sings, plays bass guitar, guitar and piano/keyboards. I have three DD's. One is great with floral arrangments, one is a stamper/scrapbooker. The youngest is into knitting & crocheting and just started scrapbooking. No other quilters yet :)

samifel 01-18-2011 09:28 AM

I guess most of my family has talent in some area or another, but I think the most surprising talent is my 13 year old granddaughter....she can sing like an angel. You see we are a family of people who "can't carry a tune in a bucket". I tried out of choir in high school and was told there was room in the band. My cheerleading coach told me not to sing out loud.... So we are all amazed and after checking DNA (LOL) we feel very much in awe of her.

raptureready 01-18-2011 09:59 AM

Mom did beautiful piecing and quilting all by hand. And was one of the most phenomenal cobbler makers around. She was an excellent country cook and anyone that ever ate a meal at her house never forgot how good it was.
Dad's mom made beautiful quilts all on the machine and boy, could she fry chicken.
Dad played the piano and did some painting but mostly he grew things--a farmer that loved his God, family, country and land. He was a good mechanic. He had a connection with his animals that seemed uncanny--like they could actually understand one another, in fact, I believe they did. He was also an excellent cook and full of common sense wisdom.
Mom's sisters all quilted, all were great cooks
Oldest sister paints, plays the piano and sings high soprano beautifully. She also gardens and is an excellent cook.
Twin sisters quilt, one of them also paints. And they're both expert cookie makers but fairly lousy cooks.
Oldest younger brother plays the drums and sings bass wonderfully and cooks.
Youngest brother fishes, likes to build things, etc. He also cooks but excels at campfire cooking.
Hubby flys RC planes, sails RC boats, races RC speedboats, and everything else that can be done with anything RC. He also is a computer, electronic gadget nut and loves to buy things on the computer.
DD loves to paint, is learning to sew, plays the clarinet and signs with a group that's a younger extension of Gloves of Glory. They dress all in black other than white gloves. Then they perform in front of black lights with music playing. Very awe inspiring!
Me? I can paint, sew clothing and costumes, quilt, scrapbook, rubber stamp, research genealogy, crochet, knit,
play the piano a bit, and whatever else happens to intrique me. Do I do all these things at the same time? No. I also collect glass eggs, unique musical instruments (a small collection of harmonicas, wooden "spoons", a mountain dulcimer, a bariton ukelele, 2 auto harps, and my prize instrument---a zither from the 1800's), and nativities. And like most of my family, I'm a pretty fair cook.

Can you tell that I've been dieting and I'm pretty hungry as I'm typing this? BTW dd at 11 is becoming a fairly good cook but DH is HORRIBLE at it.

Becky Crafts 01-18-2011 12:49 PM

Should have mentioned grandmother was an excellent artist, my sister is an artist, mother crochets, great aunt was like me..a little of everything, aunt quilted, bakes beautiful cakes & my dad was a woodworker, & could fix everything from watches to kilns & photography equipment.

dixiebelle162002 01-18-2011 02:28 PM

My mother does beautiful hand embrodiery work, my dad can fix almost anything that is broken: appliances, cars, plumbing you name it. I consider that very talented....considering he has not had any formal training in these areas. My grandmother did hand quilting. My daughter paints and my son does wonderful drawings. My husband does wood crafts.

SweetSlumber 01-18-2011 03:55 PM

what a great question, it made me realize that everyone in my family (mom, dad, 10 siblings) does something with their hands, some for enjoyment and some for a living. We all love to garden. One sister quilts also, two are florists, another has her MFA and is a potter. All six brothers can build anything, fix anything, one's a mason, one's a bicycle mechanic, two are finish carpenters. Dads an engineer who loves to play guitar and piano, Mom doesn't sew anymore she's busy playing with the little grandchildren, but she's still an amazing baker/cook. My son likes to sew, he plays guitar and drums. I've left the knitting and cross-stitch behind for my addiction to quilting.

CarrieAnne 01-18-2011 05:22 PM

My Dad builds house, and furnitre, and about anything, (he made me a cat tree a while ago, lol). BF is a regular and Deisel mechanic, hecan fix almost anything.
My Grandma was the sewer, knitter, crafty person.
I dabble in lots of crafts and sewing. No musical stuff at all in our family!

cjomomma 01-18-2011 05:41 PM

Wow!! This has been great reading all of your responses. Thank you!

Zappycat 01-18-2011 05:42 PM

My dad was a carpenter too. He was the most talented person I have ever met. When we were young, he built an addition onto our house to make a bedroom bigger for my sister and I all by himself. He built my older sister (way before I was born) an amazing playhouse in the backyard, It was a Christmas gift for her. He built it in pieces in the basement, and then assembled it outside before Christmas and she got the key for Christmas. It has working windows and adoor with a lock and inside it had a wooden stove and kitchen table and wooden TV with a know that you would turn to change the pictures on the screen! THEN... you could also change it into the control panel of a spaceship and the pictures would look like outer space shots! SO COOL!!

When I was in high school, he built a camper for the back of his pick up truck... again, in the basement... and then reassembled it outside! We went across country in it on vacation! He could also do plumbing and electrical work and he painted pictures. He was so incredibly creative!

My mom could sew, knit and crochet. My older sister sews and makes jewelry. My twin sister makes jewelry and used to do woodworking crafts. I sew and have also done woodworking crafts and photography. I married a guy with no creative talents and no interest in it.... and now my kids are also not interested. They are into sports. I tried to get my daughter interested in sewing, but she just didn't have the patience. My son appreciates the creative things and has a good eye. I like to bounce ideas off of him, but he has never created anything himself. Maybe he'll surprise me someday!
Absolutely NO musical talent here!! haha!

hperttula123 01-18-2011 05:49 PM

There are alot of talented families out there. I sew, crochet, do woodwork, and any other crafty thing I can get my hands on..lol:)
My oldest daughter just loves draw and do anything that I am doing. My middle child wants to be a country singer. She is always singing. My youngest is three and he loves to get into stuff...haha...and he's really good at it.
My kids are very involved with my hobbies and if I'm scrapbooking, they get to play with all the stuff. They stamp, make cards and little books. They like to sew, crochet, weave, make jewelry, draw...pretty much anything. I think it's good for them to know how do do everything so keep busy.

quiltgrammyt2 01-18-2011 05:59 PM

Hubby plays guitar, does mechanic work, used to paint cars, welds(designed and built our wooburnig stove) and he can build things with wood but does not enjoy it.
Son play bass guitar(really anything with strings),plays harmonica, designs and builds go-karts.
Daughter writes great children stories, plays piano and is great with kids(her own and daycare kids)
Grandkids can bring joy to any day and make me laugh, they are the greatest,IMHO  :D

jeannie t 01-19-2011 06:26 AM

My DH is a chain saw carver and makes clocks, I also do jewerly design, but best at loving grandkids and my furbabies and DH and my 2 sons

marthe brault-hunt 01-19-2011 06:33 AM

I sew, knit, crochet, embroider, huck weaving. I used to work wood, set up tiles and weave on a loom.
My mother made our clothes, knit and crochet.
My sister still knit and do counted cross stitch,
One of my daughter does bookbinding and used to give workshops.
On my mother side everyone was crafty out of necessity maybe , but they gave me a precious heritage.
I forgot my dad was a wonderful cook and baked the fluffiest pie, any time my aunts served a pie at a family gathering they would say of course , it is not as good as Albert's.
My deceased son was a whizz at mechanics, He had the reputation to be able to put up a Honda Civic from scratch. The auto parts dealer would phone him for advice.
I'm doing my best to have the GD interested. I keep my fingers crossed.

What do the signs mean in your granddaughter's drawing?

There are some wonderfully talented families here.

Mine includes a dad who does whatever needs doing - from woodworking to tile to roofing to farming to pruning trees - you get the gist, I think. His woodworking is always a work of art. My mom sews, makes wonderful meals and organizes activities on a grand scale - think Girl Scout camp for 150 - 200 girls. (I wish that was a skill I had inherited!)
My husband is an artist, and a whiz with electrical/electronic things. One daughter is an artist, a fantastic teacher (math, no less), and has created her own line of stationery. The other has a knack for music performance and keeping people laughing, and no fear about trying something without directions! As for me, well, I quilt, crochet, sing, bake, and make clothing.

Thanks for asking the question. Answering has helped me see again the wonderful things going on around me.

svenskaflicka1 01-19-2011 10:10 AM

hubby plays guitar, sings--i play piano, accordion, guitar, banjo, sing, bake cakes (wedding, etc) , sew (made eldest daughter's wedding dress, bridesmaids, etc--catered all three daughter's weddings and did flowers for two of them), crochet, paint, do mixed media art, etc. (and i'm a nurse) two of three daighters are studio artists. two knit and crochet, as well, and sew, sing, play the piano, accordion, and/or guitar. other daughter has three sons--two have autism. she is the best mom--they are terribly sweet, decent kids (and she plays piano). mom played piano, accordion, organ, keyboard, and sewed. dad played sousaphone--and he could fix anything from a swiss watch to a sherman tank. (he was a machinist, tool and die maker, master electriian. if he couldn't get a part he needed, he would mill it.) both of grandmothers quilted, and one made rugs on her big loom she brought from sweden. grandpa jake was a classical violinist, grandpa gust played the harmonica. i was the luckiest kid in the world--the whole family had talent of one kind or another, and the only shame in life was not using the gifts you were given. can't beat the old immigrants for instilling that in the new generations.

I know they are letters but it has been so long that I don't want to guess and get them wrong. I used to know the whole alphabet in sign language and a few words.
