What teachers make..................

The dinner guests were sitting around the table discussing life.

One man, a CEO, decided to explain the problem with education. He argued, "What's a kid going to learn from someone who decided his best option in life was to become a teacher?"

To stress his point he said to another guest; "You're a teacher,
Bonnie. Be honest. What do you make?"

Bonnie, who had a reputation for honesty and frankness replied,
"You want to know what I make?" (She paused for a second, then began...)

"Well, I make kids work harder than they ever thought they
could..

I make kids sit through 40 minutes of class time when their
parents can't make them sit for 5 without an I Pod, Game Cube or movie rental.

You want to know what I make?" (She paused again and looked at each and every person at the table)

"I make kids wonder.

I make them question.

I make them apologize and mean it.

I make them have respect and take responsibility for their
actions.

I teach them to write and then I make them write. Keyboarding
isn't everything.

I make them read, read, read.

I make them show all their work in math. They use their God
given brain, not the man-made calculator.

I make my students from other countries learn everything they
need to know about English while preserving their unique cultural identity.

I make my classroom a place where all my students feel safe.

Finally, I make them understand that if they use the gifts they
were given, work hard and follow their hearts, they can succeed in life."

(Bonnie paused one last time and then continued.)

"Then, when people try to judge me by what I make, with me
knowing money isn't everything, I can hold my head up high and pay no attention because they are ignorant. You want to know what I make? I MAKE A DIFFERENCE."

"What do you make Mr. CEO?" His jaw dropped, he went silent.

Teaching is... the profession that makes all other professions
possible!

As a retired teacher, a big AMEN!

maryellen2u 09-19-2011 12:00 PM

Oh thank you so much! This is by far the best I've read on this board. I am so proud to call myself a teacher-retired after 33 years. God bless every soul in every classroom!

JanTx 09-19-2011 12:26 PM

Excellent! I'm going to give a copy to my DGS to take to his teachers!

As the Nana of an ADHD kid who was regarded as a "discipline problem" in kindergarten and Grade 1 and is now succeeding in Grade 5 in all subjects at the advanced level, I know this to be true!!

Kimkankwilt 09-19-2011 02:16 PM

well said....thank-you :)

Thank you, well said myself and two daughter are teacher, I will share this with them

clarinet87 09-19-2011 02:44 PM

As a future teacher, it never fails to amaze me how undervalued teaching as a profession is. I should have moved to Finland (it's a very competitive and highly valued career there)!

Without teachers, there would be no other careers!

bodie358 09-19-2011 02:46 PM

As someone working on her degree in elementary and special eduction - I say amen !!

lovelyl 09-19-2011 03:08 PM

Thank you! I will be retiring from teaching in Dec. and needed a confirmation that it was all worth it!

I'm not a school teacher, but did teach 3-5 grade girls Sunday school class for awhile. Also, I come from a long line of school teachers. An excellent post! Teachers, especially in today's world need more praise and appreciate than ever.. Thanks to all the retired teachers, current and future teachers on this board. Kudos to you...

sewgull 09-19-2011 05:20 PM

Teachers are never given the credit they deserve.
Thank you teachers for me being able to read, otherwise I could not understand all the odd symbles that make up words so I can enjoy this board.

Robinmg 09-19-2011 06:16 PM

As a teacher I thank you for this. I am going to send it to my fellow teachers.

COYOTEMAGIC 09-19-2011 06:22 PM

I am a retired teacher and I could not agree more. Many times I was criticized for the summer vacation, Spring break and Christmas vacation we had. Not one of the critics had any idea how hard we elementary teachers worked every school day. My biggest challenge ever was 43 students in a mixed grade 2 and 3. Then I had to go home and be fresh for the family. No sir they did not pay me enough.

Quilt Mom 09-20-2011 05:04 AM

Amen!

Teachers are highly respected in Asia. Why not here? I think America has some of its priorities skewed.

Homespun 09-20-2011 05:21 AM

Yes, we do. Thanks from another retired teacher for the reminder of all the good teachers do.

jeannie t 09-20-2011 05:48 AM

Couldn't say it better!

Retired teacher and I love it! I especially like the last line.

Good Answer

lillybeck 09-20-2011 06:25 AM

I am a retired day care teacher and so many people think that all I did was baby sit. NOT so. We teach kids starting with infants through kindergaren and they are taught to recognize there name in writing by age one. They are read to, do painting hands and brush, explore science by feeling and touching and mixing things. This is just a small part but each child I sent into kindergarten knew how to spell and write their names, recognized opposites, colors. letters and numbers. I think that is a bit more than baby sitting. Most teacherr are great and deserve a whole lot more than they get. I was often asked if I could not find a better job. I think I had the best job in the world and would not trade it to be anything else/

MaggieLou 09-20-2011 06:34 AM

I just sent this to my granddaughter and her new husband. He is a Jr. HS band director and she is finishing college to be an elementary school teacher.

joycecil 09-20-2011 06:47 AM

I agree.

Caswews 09-20-2011 07:08 AM
