I posted that I had some vintage fabric and there seems to be a problem with what I thought was vintage fabric. There are 72,000,000 things when you google just one subject about it. What is it and do I have vintage fabric or what?

ZTAgirlknits 09-23-2011 10:20 AM

well what do you have?

TacoMama 09-23-2011 10:43 AM

This is what I posted last nite.

http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-155093-1.htm

It is only 3 pieces that I wanted to trade, but I have a lot more. May try and sell on ebay.

jaciqltznok 09-23-2011 11:01 AM

I went and looked at your fabrics. They are not true vintage. The first is about a late 50's maybe even 60's, the second is more late 60's early 70's and the last one is about the same!

TacoMama 09-23-2011 11:24 AM

Thanks!

So what is considered true vintage what year?

TacoMama 09-23-2011 11:38 AM

Don't ask me!!!!

sewwhat85 09-23-2011 11:48 AM

i just read the definition and i belive some confuse antique with vintage they are not one and the same. Vintage was first only a term used in wine making and since we have used it in other ways. There are no real dates to describe vintage usless you put a date on it like a vintage 1924 ford for example

StitchinJoy 09-23-2011 11:55 AM

I consider vintage to be older than 50 years old. And by that definition, I myself happen to be "vintage."

In the case of vehicles a 1924 ford would be antique. Vehicles become antique after 25 or 30 years(I forget which) unlike furniture, china, glass ware, etc. which is 100yrs.

Greenheron 09-23-2011 03:02 PM

We all had this discussion before  and I will restate my scroogy, grinchy, opinion that by itself "vintage" has NO MEANING except when referring to grapes/wine making . I don't know who started using it incorrectly. Vintage______??? No meaning. Vintage '59, 1947 Vintage etc. mean made in the year stated.

IMHO 'vintage' is only one step up from that other hideous term:
'collectible'. And don't make me go THERE. :hunf:

It depends which state you are in if it is twenty or thirty to ba an antique car

I, the anti-"vintage" avenger, looked at your fabric and it corresponds to what flea marketers, yard salers, junk store owners and eBayers call "Vintage"---old stuff but not an antique. Knowledgeable fabric historians would do better at dating and probably have already.

If you run quickly and quietly you may yet avoid the FauxSemantics Police. Now, RUN!

Barb44 09-23-2011 05:00 PM

Don't let this arguing over semantics bother you. To you is is vintage because it is 36" wide. I accept that. I looked at your thread last night and didn't even notice or care whether it was "true vintage" or not. To me anything over 30 years old is vintage. We all have our own opinions. People need to get over themselves.

Just go ahead and offer your fabric for trade and if they don't like it, someone might.

TacoMama 09-23-2011 05:52 PM

Sorry, Green Heron, if you had the discussion and I missed it. I am not up on wine making in WV or any other place. Thank you, Barb44, for your caring response. I sure didn't mean to start the Civil War 2011. Can't put all I want to on here or the board police would shut my discussion down.. Thanks for helping me understand the wrong terms, but getting ugly isn't usually my way of doing things.

Nantie 09-23-2011 05:56 PM

I'll drink to that!!

My I'll drink to that was meant to agree with Greenheron, I'll figure this out eventually...probably when I am not sipping Proseco!

TacoMama 09-23-2011 07:30 PM

Had to look up Proseco.......never heard of it. Have a real problem with my sister's death (at 52) which was due to alcoholism and my brother's death (at 45) due to the same disease, if you call it a disease.

The fabric you posted is most likely from the 50's or 60's...they stopped making the narrower width fabrics in the late 60's. It is vintage but Definitely not 30's.

piepatch 09-24-2011 03:14 AM

I don't know what "vintage" has to be, but if your fabric is just 35" to 38" wide, it is pretty old! :)

TacoMama 09-24-2011 05:13 AM

Look it up in the dictionary. Vintage has come to mean a lot of things more than just grapes and wine making. My DH comes from a long line of Germans........and he is very knowledgeable and vintage. LOL However, the wine making has stopped in his family. :)

sewgray 09-24-2011 06:50 AM

According to this dictionary, vintage as a noun refers to wine and wine making, but as an adjective it can refer to almost anything.

The 60s were 50 years ago. That makes 60s fabric vintage. Just because it isn't 30s fabric doesn't mean it can't be vintage.

I Googled "vintage fabric definition" and the defintion I agree with came from a quilt guild in Missouri, where they were having a 6" square exchange of vintage fabric. The poster had pictures of fabric from every decade from the 1920's to the 1970's.

Unless you can get someone who is certified in some way to give you a better definition, call it vintage fabric and tell the potential buy from what era it came. If s/he wants it, well and good, if not, let someone esle buy it. froggyintexas

Again, all fabric at least 50 years old is considered ANTIQUE in fabric arts, including quilts.

They do say that if you remember the 60s you didn't experience the 60s.

Well, I remember the 60s!

Old hen 09-24-2011 01:01 PM

I have a piece of fabric that I bought about 45 years ago. It still has the little sticker on it that says, " JC Penney,4 yds./$1.00" and the pattern is tiny brown paisley with orange flowers. I bought it to make something for one of my little girls..........now she doesn't want anything made out of "THAT"!!! :) :) :)

SUZAG 09-24-2011 01:17 PM

Kind of disappointed in the original thread thread for jumping on tacomama over one word and also that I guess I'm not "vintage", I know I'm not "collectable" so I guess I am just dang "OLD"...

ptquilts 09-24-2011 01:22 PM

I would consider it vintage, but not antique.

TacoMama 09-24-2011 05:08 PM

Suzag, You are too funny! Thanks for the laugh. I needed it!

BarbaraSue 09-24-2011 05:54 PM

TacoMama, call what you like. If someone is going to argue your semantics, they aren't buying the fabric! If they want the fabric, it doesn't matter what you called it unless you said it was skunked!
I remember the 60's, I was too young to experience them then, or my mother wouldn't let me 'experience' them.
I've been married almost 40 years, so we are almost vintage ourselves, possibly antique. We are out of date since many marrigaes don't last the 7 year itch.

TacoMama 09-24-2011 07:06 PM

Barbara Sue,We are right about the same age I guess. We will be married 40 years in December. I remember some of the 60s better than the first part of the 60s. Thanks for your comment.

TacoMama 09-24-2011 07:08 PM

Old Hen, that paisley sounds pretty. I love paisley. My Daddy is 84 years old and he didn't know what paisley was. He lives in OK and my sister showed him some of Mom's things which were paisley.
