When do you take your Christmas decorations down?

For years we took our decorations down the weekend after New Years, but lately I have seen folks take them down the day after Christmas. Thoughts???

Jingle 12-30-2017 07:43 PM

When I did put decorations up when kids were little around New Years Day. When Grands were younger about the day after Christmas. We no longer put up decorations.

tranum 12-30-2017 07:55 PM

Our Christmas begins at Christmas - so our tree & decorations go up late & stay up until January 6. Outside lights go up early in Dec and go down around January 6. It’s how my parents raised me. :D

BETTY62 12-30-2017 08:01 PM

For years I did not take them down before New Years day, however, the last few years I have taken them down the day after Christmas.

QuiltE 12-30-2017 08:33 PM

For the work of putting up the decorations, I keep them up for the "Twelve Days of Christmas".
So that means through until the 6th.

Depending on where that falls in the week, and what is happening in my life,
they may come down on the 5th or a few days after the 6th.

quiltingshorttimer 12-30-2017 08:47 PM

with a real tree we would put up about 2 weeks before and take down before/on New Years. Fast forward 3 years with an artificial tree--this year we put up a week before and once DS's family leaves on New Years we'll start taking down stuff--may take 2 days to do it though! One thing I want to do is sort through all the decorations we no longer put up and st aside for kids to go through and either they take or I donate to charity. I'm hoping to declutter the basement in 2018

Prism99 12-30-2017 10:02 PM

We haven't put up a tree in a couple of years. However, when we did, we left it up until sometime in March. Both my husband and I liked having the cheery lights on during the dark winter months in Wisconsin and Minnesota. (I should add that we would always procrastinate putting the tree up, so it usually went up the day before Christmas Eve!)

sewbizgirl 12-30-2017 11:06 PM

We leave the tree up until after New Year's Day. I am always appalled when I see a Christmas tree on somebody's garbage pile the day after Christmas... and even have seen them thrown out later on Christmas day! Sacrilege! :D

K-Roll 12-31-2017 01:09 AM

DH and I contend about this subject every year. He takes it down on New Years Day no matter my request to leave it up 'til Epiphany (the 6th).

NJ Quilter 12-31-2017 03:08 AM

Usually at least until Epiphany - depending on when that falls. Usually weekend after New Years though. And we put up our tree usually 1-2 weeks prior to Christmas.

DottyD 12-31-2017 03:11 AM

We have friends coming for lunch tomorrow - New Years Day - so I will take mine down on the 2nd January. Happy New Year !!

quilterpurpledog 12-31-2017 03:24 AM

I like them down New Years Day. They generally go up between the 18th and 20th of December. One of our sons has a birthday on the 17th. We tried to keep Christmas out of his birthday. But, New Year's Day is the time to move forward-the holidays are over.

We do the same. DH wants to leave it until NYD. If not for him, it would all be down on the Dec. 27/28.

LindaJ 12-31-2017 04:33 AM

Like you, the day after Christmas. Mine is a little 4 foot so easy to clean up.

Moonglow 12-31-2017 04:38 AM

I start my Christmas decorating anytime after 1st December and take everything down by 6th January. I find that as I get older I don't do a much as I used to, but I still like to have a few decorations around so it feels like Christmas.

LavenderBlue 12-31-2017 04:50 AM

Usually all lights and decorations are put away January 2, but beginning tomorrow the South will experience a week-long cold snap - down 20 degrees. For that reason, everything came down yesterday.

daisydawg 12-31-2017 05:01 AM

Am getting ready to downsize(move) so will start today. Decide what to keep and what to give away. Have 2 trees so will keep a small one and give/donate one to a Women's shelter. Will do the same with ornaments. Have way too many.

2manyhobbies 12-31-2017 05:23 AM

January 6th, after the coming of the Three Kings.

Growing up, we decorated the weekend after Thanksgiving. and they came down New Year's before we kids went back to school. That pattern stayed with me through marriage, until I started taking care of my mother in l997 or 1998. She lived until she was 97, 9 months in 2005. Four months later, my husband died. After that, I had no time to put up anything. Besides, my house had become stuffed full of inherited things and had no room. Five years later, I moved to Iowa and what I have now, I bought. My Texas & Oklahoma Christmas items, tree included, are still in storage.

I have a friend here who is known as the Purple Lady. She loves purple and wears purple, almost exclusively. It is predominately another color, it has purple on it somewhere. She also has purple 3 Christmas trees which are decorated and stay up year round. She has a couple miniature trees, too.

I think that if I get to put up a tree again (I'm 80 now) I will take a page out of her book and leave it up. Right now, I have a miniature decorated tree I bought from my florist friend before moving to Iowa and it stays up, just not in a prominent or permanent place.

youngduncan 12-31-2017 05:52 AM

For many years, our tradition was to put our Christmas tree up on Thanksgiving Day. It remained decorated until January 6. Outside lights, etc., went up after Thanksgiving, but everything came down on January 6.

This year, however, because the weather forecast seemed really ugly, everything is down and packed away -- just sitting there in piles waiting to go into the attic above the garage. Sigh! That may take a while.

Trisher 12-31-2017 06:04 AM

Usually after New Years Day. This year, we had a real tree, and I got tired of crawling under it to water it, and getting showered with pine needles, so it went out on Boxing Day. We had it set up in front of the patio doors, so it was an easy push out the open doors!

Having lived in Denver the majority of my life, the tradition was to wait until after Western Stock Show (sometime around the 20th of January). A little bit about that tradition can be found at https://colorado.ourcommunitynow.com...tmas-lighting/

I don't remember as a child when we got our tree - (no fake ones then) so that it wouldn't dry out before we took it down. The lights at Civic Center will stay up, but the Christmas tree pick up for metro Denver areas will be before the end of stock show (this year on the 21st) as indicated http://kdvr.com/2017/12/26/where-to-...hristmas-tree/

Janey - Neat people never make the exciting discoveries I do.

Chasing Hawk 12-31-2017 06:18 AM

Anytime after the New Year.

Boston1954 12-31-2017 06:33 AM

I have cleaned off the coffee table, but the tree will stay up for about 2 or 3 more days.

Onebyone 12-31-2017 06:40 AM

I take inside decorations down the day after Christmas. Outside lights when DH feels like it, usually before New Year's Day. To me when something is over, it's over.

Debbie C 12-31-2017 07:08 AM

This was a terrible year for me. I lost my sister quite suddenly and unexpectedly in April, then my mom in November. My dad died just 3 years ago. I am the last of my immediate family and feeling quite low. In spite of selling our N.Y. home and moving to a lovely retirement home on two acres in PA, the year was filled with more sadness than joy. I did put a tree up because my two daughters and husband said it would help me find Christmas spirit. Well, that didn't work. I took all decorations down December 26th. I'm hoping 2018 will be more uplifting to my spirit, but I just needed to go through my grieving period.

SusieQOH 12-31-2017 07:14 AM

It always depends on how long the tree holds up. This year it's barely shed any needles. But I don't really want to look at it past New Year's Day.
Debbie C- I'm so sorry you had such a bad year. Hope the next one is better for you.

judykay 12-31-2017 07:14 AM

I have an artificial tree and it goes up the day after Thanksgiving and comes down no earlier than New Years . I love decorating for the holidays and so I feel if I am doing the decorating and taking down it is up to me when the time is right.

grannie cheechee 12-31-2017 08:08 AM

I'm allergic to a real tree in the house. I was so glad for artificial trees were made. We use to take Christmas trees down on New Years. Now we don't even put it out because our kids all have grands, and live away from here. We enjoy everybody in the neighborhood decors. I have noticed the trees are waiting for pick up. It seems the trees dried out early this year.

Anniedeb 12-31-2017 10:16 AM

When I feel like it! This year I was going to start decorating the week of Dec. 11th. DH had other ideas, and had a heart attack that day!! (Pay attention to those warning signs!) He's much improved now, but we got sidetracked with surgery, and a hospital stay. My son came over and we decorated just in time for DH to come home. I usually don't take it down to mid January. This year I want to purge a little more. So many things I don't use anymore.

kittiebug 12-31-2017 10:43 AM

mine are down , :D

JanieH 12-31-2017 11:46 AM

My inside decorations are usually put up by New Year's Day. But with 2 very curious, very active cats - my inside decorating is kept to a minimum and no tree for them to climb!

Outside lights stay up at least till Jan. 6. Then it depends on the weather and how I am feeling. If the weather is good, I will take them down Jan. 6. If the weather is really bad, I will leave them up until I can get out and do it. If it takes too long, I will at least unplug them so they don't come on. I always hate that day - I do love my outside lights and would keep them up and on till spring if I thought I wouldn't start getting really strange looks from the neighbors!

Aurora 12-31-2017 11:55 AM

Mine stays up until Candlemas.

carolynjo 12-31-2017 01:00 PM

I had a friend, a florist, make us a 1/2 Christmas tree to hang on the wall. We love it. We have limited space, so having it hang on the wall solves our problem. We take it down the day after Christmas, cover it with plastic, and hang it on the garage wall till next year.

sandy l 12-31-2017 01:39 PM

I'll be taking down what few inside decorations we have tomorrow, New Years Day. Outside will be another matter. It's just too darn cold.

crafty pat 12-31-2017 02:38 PM

We used to take it down on New Years day but this year my kids and grand kids are still here until New Years day and the youngest GD is having so much fun with the tree lights that after they go home tomorrow i will rest a day or two then take it down. After all I do it for the kids.

Teen 12-31-2017 05:40 PM

I take-down Christmas the week between the 2 holidays. This year I didn't decorate because it's all packed to be moved next year....so, instead, I got to see for the week.. Win win...

maryb119 12-31-2017 06:16 PM

I usually take Christmas decorations down the day after Christmas. I enjoy them but when Christmas is done, I want them down.

thank you Susie, since dad died, I've cared for mom who wanted only to join dad. When my sis passed, momma really went downhill. This past year has been an emotional mess for me. With our beautiful new home, I haven't even had the energy nor desire to set up my quilting room. Grief is a powerful energy. I'm slowing working my way back. And my dh has been such a good and patient blessing who has done much to help me cope.

Suz 01-01-2018 05:45 AM

I still have my door wreaths up, but the rest are already down and stored. My tree (called my "Charlie Brown") is dressed with the pillowcase and waiting for Christmas 2018.
