Gosh! I didn't see this as sad at all, as an earlier poster stated. I saw this as a reminder of a common experience most of us have shared, looking back at the 'good old days' with humor and fondness. Would I like to go back to the days when my three were little? Probably not. But I do remember them as one of the best times of my life. My three are all adults and great people. We frequently laugh about memories of events just like the ones described in this poem, and when they thank me for raising them, I just tell them to remember that when I have incontinence and Alzheimers. But sad? Never.

I agree. I wouldn't want to be back in "the good ol' days" when my kids were litte (well, maybe just one day) but I do think of them fondly now -- at a distance. And I took this as how many parents' experiences & memories are so similar.

There is also one "When I Am An Old Man" IF I remember right it starts out "When I am an old man I shall wear Plaid" I am not sure who wrote it but it is as good as the one for us girls. carol
