I got so much good advice on here about mattresses, would like to ask about bed pillows.
I've bought ones that looked/felt great & were pancakes in no time. Also had a couple that were solid as rocks & leave a crick in my neck.
Do you have a fav brand/store for buying pillows? A neighbor said she hasn't bought any in 20 yrs!!!! Guess I'm just not good at picking pillows. :(

quilting Carol 08-05-2011 08:36 AM

Be ready to spend some money$$ I have several and they are all fine 20 to 30 years later. Go to Macy's they have some good ones...

moonwork42029 08-05-2011 08:41 AM

I've had a feather pillow that is an embarrassment to my hubby...it actually spits feathers now. It's not like I couldn't make a case for it and sew it inside (gosh what a novel idea :)) but I did that before and it did change the way the pillow "felt" inside the case.

So I bucked up and bought a new "fluffy" pillow...OMG...I thought I was sleeping on a 2' high block of fluff...that wouldn't flatten for anything. After a couple hours of fighting that rascal I tossed it on the floor and got my "normal" pillow back.

DH tried the "new" pillow too thinking it looked comfy...it also got the toss again, lol. Funny thing is ... it didn't look that fluffy in the store.

Good luck. Me and my feather pillow will have to be together until all the feathers are gone it seems.

Jeanniejo 08-05-2011 08:46 AM

I like the down pillows from Ikea. I like a thin pillow so I made 2 out of mine. My DH likes a thicker pillow but still would rather have down.

bluteddi 08-05-2011 08:50 AM

I am a picky pillow person... I have neck and back issues.
I have shopped everywhere for pillows.. allways go back to JCPenney or Macy's....... I'm one of those dumb looking ppl that puts my head ON the pillow in the store( thru the plastic)
BTW.... for all the cast offs....I save the plastics and I give them as gifts to my kids and parents ( ANYTHING is better than the pillows they normally have... they use them til they die!) Between DH and I we have 7 kids... I outfitted all the kids and my parents in pillows one year, during the pillow search!

I have a feather pillow that I got from mom... it is a bit ' stale" smelling... any ideas on how to freshen it up? The fabric looks ok, but outdated..... but I dont want to make a new case for all those feathers.....it is currently residing on my back deck in the SUNSHINE...... one can hope.

plainpat 08-05-2011 09:01 AM

For sure.....I know just what you mean  When we go to visit DD & family in Fl, my pillows go too!Think they use wally world stuff till it shreds :-D

Sun will prob help the stale smell....especially hot sun. Can it be washed? I like to wash pillows on a very hot, sunny day & dry them on the porch.Have you tried Free Breeze?

katier825 08-05-2011 09:04 AM

I like the ones from JCPenney that have a gusset around the edge. They don't seem to flatten out as quickly.

Lori S 08-05-2011 09:08 AM

There is just nothing like sleeping on a great pillow. I truley believe in spending $$ to get a great pillow. I like Macy's for Down pillows. Do not confuse feather with down.... HUGE difference.

Minnisewta 08-05-2011 09:10 AM

My problem is... what is a comfortable pillow? I have used throw pillows, thick, thin, hard and soft pillows.I have used feather, down and that stuff that bounces back. Bouncing back doesn't help if it doesn't support your neck!!! When you find one ,et me know what it is.

amma 08-05-2011 09:11 AM

A good feather pillow for me too :D:D:D

hannajo 08-05-2011 09:38 AM

I tend to like very firm pillows, and often stuff two pillows into one pillowcase. It helps use up all those old ones we all seem to accumulate.

DH is away this week, and somehow, I ended up on his Tempurpedic pillow. I have to say it's rather enjoyable. I don't know how much it costs, but now I want one for myself.

TanyaL 08-05-2011 09:39 AM

I have found that the feather pillows at Sam's Club are good quality pillows and the price is reasonable.

Vivian Ketron 08-05-2011 09:42 AM

My daughter gave me a memory foam pillow. I love it. It isn't one of those that are supposed to support you neck. It is like a regular pillow but is made with memory foam. it weigh a lot but i wouldn't it trade for any other pillow.

Peckish 08-05-2011 09:53 AM

I think pillow preference is very subjective. We all sleep differently. Having said that, my husband and I both love our memory foam pillows. I believe I got them at Target, can't remember what I paid. I don't like hard pillows, but I also don't like pillows that are too soft and my head sinks all the way down to the mattress. The memory foam is soft enough to be comfortable, but firm enough that it still supports my head.

Zhillslady 08-05-2011 09:58 AM

bought mine from my chiropractor. It's almost like a memory foam pillow. Love it.

Jamiestitcher62 08-05-2011 10:37 AM

The memory foam ones are awesome, but I still need two pillows for post nasal drip so I use the memory foam on the bottom and a nice squishy foam pillow on top. Used to love feather pillows from Northern Nights (QVC) but the quality has gone downhill.

I got some pillows at Kmart a while ago
and they were down. they were called "Grandma Pillows". LOVE LOVE LOVE them.......but now they don't sell them anymore. Boo hoo. I too have been on a pillow hunt. Good luck with yours.

redkimba 08-05-2011 11:52 AM

I'm on the hunt for a new pillow also. I'm a side sleeper so I need one that doesn't squish too much. I can't use down/feather because I'm allergic to that.

::shrugs:: I will google information & see what turns up. :)

hobbykat1955 08-05-2011 03:45 PM

Macy's or Penney's for me...Never got a bad one...Always wait for a sale...Penney's runs one that's buy one and get the second for one penny...that's my favorite.

yonnikka 08-05-2011 03:49 PM

My pillow is small size, filled with Buckwheat grains. It was on sale about 75 percent OFF, at Filene's Basement, a well-known discount store in Washington, DC.

Never get the buckwheat wet--not even damp. Double-case it at all times, with a heavy muslin inner case, to prevent sweat, oily hair, perfume, spilled foods... or any other hair product from messing up the actual pillow.

It is wonderful, especially a benefit to anyone who tosses and turns, sleeps light, and must re-adjust all through the night, has neck pains, etc. I don't think I could live without it, I travel with it. ---Oh, and did I mention I've been using it for almost 23 years?

sewnsewer2 08-05-2011 03:53 PM

I like my sobakawa cloud pillow. It really straightens my neck and helps me breath better. Be aware tho, get the bigger one because the "regular" size is the size of a travel pillow.

Since I bought it I have not woken up with neck pain!

I have a tempurpedic pillow, love it. won't ever use a different pillow. took a night to get used to it. also have a tempurpedic bed, omg, I love that thing.

kacklebird 08-05-2011 05:46 PM

Bluteddi,
That is hilarious. I TOO have done the same thing in the store with pillows. I thought I was the only one who did such a thing. hehe Glad to hear I'm not the only one.

miss_ticky2 08-06-2011 12:40 AM

We both have pillows that were 'fitted' to us by a chiropractor. I've never had a sore neck since and I take it with me whenever I travel. It's some kind of foam and it's shaped with a bit of a hollow where your head goes. It's quite hard but once you get used to it, very comfortable. I'm in Australia and it's a Denton's brand (I think mine is a Medirest...hubby's is a different style)...dont' know if you get them over there in the States.

meanmom 08-06-2011 04:50 AM

I too am shopping for a mattress. I have fallen in love with a Tempurpedic. It will have to wait as it costs too much and I will have to save up. I also tried the tempurpedic pillow and loved it. There are several different styles. Not cheap $150 each. I talked the salesman iin to giving them to me with the mattress.

laralea 08-06-2011 05:07 AM

I have to weigh in on this discussion. The great pillow hunt is every bit as serious as the great iron hunt! I could have made a lot of quilts with the money I've wasted on pillows that didn't last, didn't work, etc. etc. A friend told me about latex foam (not memory foam) pillows and I found some in Big Lots for $13 each. My pillow problems are now over. I am a side sleeper and I first bought the medium density and that didn't work so I was fortunate that they had the light density also and it works perfectly. I've had mine for a couple years now. (I was buying pillows about every 6 mos.) The standard size latex foam typically costs around $50 but you can get them on sale when Kohl's and other places run the 1/2 off pillow sales. Walmart has them for $24, but site doesn't say what density they are. Anyway...here's a link. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Simmons-Be...i_sku=13283704

cjaye44 08-06-2011 05:17 AM

I've tried everything from feather to memory foam and nothing seemed comfortable. Then I found one at a yard sale filled with buckwheat hulls. It was covered with an ugly floral but I put it in a pretty cotton pillowcase and sleep like a baby. I like the way it molds around my head and it's so easy to flip when it gets hot. I have to sleep on a cool pillow.

P-BurgKay 08-06-2011 05:47 AM

I throw my feather pillows in the washer on gentle and wash them through a complete cycle, then I put them in the dryer with a couple of pair of old canvas tennis shoes. I have done this for over 30 years and do it about once every year or so. You do have to fluff the feathers as they dry. You can also hang them on the close-line, if you have one. Be sure that there are no little openings in the seams when you wash them.

firebird 08-06-2011 05:56 AM

I buy all my mattresses and pillows off the Internet at Bed in a Box. I know it sounds funny, and I was hesitant the first time but after trying it once I highly recommend it. Just go on line and take a look. Won't cost you a penny and you will be surprised at what you find.

Baloonatic 08-06-2011 06:09 AM

I've been using a buckwheat hull pillow for many years. I have reverse curvature in my neck and this pillow has saved me.

joyce j 08-06-2011 07:09 AM

I have Tempurpedic love it. Son got me new one an cant get use to it. I guess the old one is pretty flat, Just have to keep trying, maybe I will eventully sleep all nite with new one. they are very expensive,

Robinmg 08-06-2011 07:43 AM

We have temperpedic pillows. We bought them at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. My husband's cost $99 and mine cost $79. We both love them.

kwilter 08-06-2011 08:19 AM

I have down pillows that must be 50 years old that were my mom's....maybe older, because we also had down pillows as kids. I have never been able to be comfortable on any of the alternate-filled pillows. I have picked up some newer down pillows when I found one or two at Tuesday Morning but have not really "shopped" for them.

grammysharon 08-06-2011 09:51 AM

Last pillows I bought were from Bed, Bath and Beyond. They are great!!! :-)

nancy59 08-06-2011 10:29 AM

I thought I was the only one that had problems with pillows going flat. I finally got mad and stuffed my own, hasn't flattened yet, but sometimes I trade it for a softer one.

IAmCatOwned 08-06-2011 10:55 AM

I only buy down/feather pillows because nothing else really adjusts and supports my head right. I used to always buy them at Daytons during their annual sale, but of course, they have been bought out by Macy's. Lots of people like those pillows. I also buy them at Herbergers. A pillow shouldn't squash down flat until many years of use. I usually replace pillows about every 10-15 years and then remake the pillow into something for the couch or a neck support for a family member.

Jennifer22206 08-06-2011 10:58 AM

I couldn't sleep one night and was watching an Infomercial for the Sobakawa pillow. Didn't buy one from the infomercial, but saw it in Target a few days later. Picked one up and LOVE it. Was $20.

Best money I spent hands down.

jbj137 08-06-2011 11:17 AM

I make my own.
Use fiberfill and
if it flattens,
just stuff in some more.

I also fluff mine in the dryer each week.
