who knew???

2-1/2 years ago we adopted 3 cats from the shelter. Ok, they were already fixed and 3 mos old at the time. Well..... my Daisy was cleaning herself yesterday and I discovered she is a HE! I mean who knew? I was told it was a girl, so I went with that when I named her.

He knows his name so it is staying. My other cat Romeo is a female too.

I found a mother and kittens behind a store I worked at several years ago. I took a kitten and some of the other girls I worked with took one and the mother too. Well when I checked I thought it was a girl. so we named her Tinker Bell. Well sometime later ...atleast a year or so she sat there cleaning herself too...that when I noticed also that my girl cat was NOT a girl...!!! I almost died laughing. Well we didn't change the name...just shortened it to "Tinky" I still chuckle when I think about it. So your not alone.

Well thank goodness he/she was fixed or you could have little kitties by now.:D

You're right! LOL
Here they are, the gray/white is Daisy.

We had a cat join us for awhile. It was the biggest, toughest-looking yet friendliest ever tom cat, and we called him Stripes. But a neighbor who was more knowledgeable insisted he was a she, so we called the cat Princess. We took the cat to a vet and said it was a she, and no one said otherwise. Sometime later we went to another vet who informed us she was in fact a he. So we were back to Stripes.

He left us sometime after that. He was so friendly, just made himself at home with us and our other pets, that he either found a new home or went back to his old home. And when I think of all the times we crooned "Pretty pretty Princess" to him, and he just ate it up with a spoon, lol.

I understand! I found Peach in a park...I thought I had a little girl kitten but when I took "her" to the Dr. Cameron he said, "Sharon, I think Miss Peach is Mr. Peach!" We gave him a more masculine name by adding Fred C. to his name. He is officially known as "Mr. Fred C.(for cat) Peach". He is neutered and he is the love of my life!

he, he. We took in a mama cat and her two kittens. they were pretty feral so i couldn't get near them much. One kitten was very small and the other very large and muscular. the large one began to show interest in the mama in ways that made me "know" it was a male. Well we finally got the kittens to the Vet's office and found they both were girls!! i'd named one Sissie (for Sister) and one Buddy (for Brother). sigh. changed Buddy to Buddie and then to BuddieRose. We call her Rosie mostly now.

I just love Rosies cute black nose!

Diannia 10-30-2012 07:45 AM

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one that has had cats with cases of "mistaken identity"! I had a long haired grey/white stray show up and was told it was not only a girl but PG too! I named her an appropriate girl name. Several weeks later while petting her I found what I thought was a lump on her leg. Called my neighbor over (that was a vet tech and who'd said it was a girl) and showed her the lump...you guess it...her name quickly was changed to MR. FISTER...

nivosum 10-30-2012 08:00 AM

YouTube has a video that shows how you can tell a male from a female cat. The hole under the tail (not the poop hole) is round for a male and a slit shape for a female.

joyce blint 10-30-2012 08:47 AM

Too funny. We had 3 yellow kittens born Palm Sunday. My GS named them Zeke, Bubba, and Daisy Mae. As they got older we realized they are all tom cats. Daisy knows his name by now, so we haven't changed it.

dglvr 10-30-2012 08:56 AM

Ahhhh well they have a loving home. Thats what counts. Pretty funny though. :)

Jingle 10-30-2012 09:00 AM

Cats and dogs don't care what their names are as long as they get good care and rubs. Only one of my last three cats has sex gender names, He is Herbie.

judys 10-30-2012 09:13 AM

My friend had a tom cat named Emily. I asked her why and she said he just looked like an Emily. Whatever!
My sister picked out the name Rufus for her dog before she picked out the dog. Rufus became Rufus Ann.

Chasing Hawk 10-30-2012 09:54 AM

Several years ago a fluffy stray cat decided our house was the right one. I "checked" the family jewels, so I named "him" Clyde". Well a few weeks later Clyde started doing the hoochie dance in front of Moose and Brouncer. We scooped up Clyde and off to the vet!! The name stuck, she still looked like a Clyde.

My youngest daughter had a little black cat. She named her Scully (after the X-files chick). She bought her a pink diamond collar. Well when Scully was about a year old, I noticed a new set of "attachments" in her nether regions.
We laughed about it, and for awhile we called Scully, "the cat in drag".......LOL

sewnsewer2 10-30-2012 04:45 PM

Thanks everyone, now I don't feel as stupid for not knowing earlier. :D

Nativetexan & susansomethings, your cats are beautiful and do look a little alike!

lovelyl 10-31-2012 04:40 AM

I have a small cat rescue. Most of my cats are feral so I can't get close to them. I ended up naming a cat Larry that turned out to be a girl! I have 3 feral kittens currently that I need to trap and have fixed. I think one is a male, but not sure. It is so hard to catch a feral cat to have them fixed. They always seem to know a trap when they see one, even though I let it set out near them for several days before I "activate" it. They play in it until it is set up as a trap - go figure! My rescue is at maximum at 12 cats now, so I can't risk thinking any cat is a male and not having it fixed! I can barely afford to feed them all, now!

katybob 10-31-2012 06:11 AM

That's why my Katy became Katybob! I was assured he was a she when he was a tiny ball of fur and I didn't check til he went to the vet for his baby shots. That's him in my avatar. He's 19 now and not doing very well, so my vet is keeping a close eye on him.

LenaBeena 10-31-2012 07:07 AM

When I was a little girl a cat came to our farm and I loved it so it stayed. I named it Walter as I thought that was the prettiest name ever! You guessed it....Walter had kittens. But the name stuck and she came when called. My Mother did not call her by name however. She felt calling "Walter, time to come in" would have the neighbors wondering as my brother's name was Charles and my Dad's was Pete!

Grace MooreLinker 10-31-2012 07:47 AM

The bottom picture looks just like my cat Cougar, he was such a charmer. Miss him still after almost 4 years

mermaid 10-31-2012 10:45 AM

We had an older tabby come to our house and adopt us. We had "her" vetted, & told that she'd most likely been fixed (by a young vet) Next time we took 'her' in for her annual shots, a lady vet came in..mentioned we had a handsome lad. WHAT???!!! She looked, said "uh huh". Orange tabbies are ALMOST ALWAYS males. Had never heard that before, but it might be a clue when cat shopping.

crtwelvecats 10-31-2012 10:47 AM

my spunky could be daisys twin. but is a girl ,LOL, what a cute bunch you have,, enjoy.

oh you mentioned orange tabbys. I miss ours. we had him for 17 yrs. Loki was his name and we certainly knew he was a him! this pic was taken about 1 month before we lost him.

That is so funny! Oops...my comment is not about the above post. It's in response the the first post on the thread.

chris_quilts 10-31-2012 04:10 PM

Interesting about orange tabbies. I've had 3 female orange tabbies in my lifetime but many more males. It does make sense, I guess.
My Romeo was a Zoe until the vet told me he needed a masculine name cuz he is a boy kitty and not a female.

MimiBug123 10-31-2012 08:56 PM

I have a friend who adopted a cute little female kitten. She is solid white, so they named her snowball. When they took her to the vet to have her spayed, they discovered she is a boy. His name is now snowball-less.

MaggieLou 11-01-2012 06:48 AM

My two are feral kittens we're still trying to tame enough to let us pet them. We were told they were both females but they were only about 4 months old at the time. Guess I'll find out when I take them to get spayed/neutered. At least their names aren't gender specific.

nicoledavis70 11-01-2012 07:06 AM

Too funny! My best friend had this same thing happen to her, same name too. She just ended up amending it to "Daisy Bob"

JoanneS 11-01-2012 07:33 AM

Reminds me of the female cat DD found in the aftermath of Hurricane Hugo in Boston 20+ years ago. She didn't mind being named Hugo. Great cat - we all miss her. She would climb a tree and jump to the 3rd floor balcony outside DD's apartment - and sit on the window sill until someone let her in.She never did anything the easy way. Must have had something to do with being lost in a hurricane.

Interesting. Hugo, the FEmale cat my DH found in Boston was an orange tabby.

nativetexan, that was one huge cat, or else a cute little Santa. Loki looks quite content in Santa's lap, too. Mine would be shredding the red suit.

LynnVT 11-01-2012 05:34 PM

We had an orange tabby girl, too. She was our last cat. One thing that does prove gender is that all calico cats are female. They have white, black, brown spots. Funny that two people mention a vet getting the gender wrong. What if you asked them to neuter a kitty? Enjoyed this string.

katybob 11-01-2012 05:54 PM

Several years ago I was given an older cat whose elderly owner had died. He was a neutered male unfortunately named Kitty. When I took him to my vet for a checkup, he kept referring to Kitty as "she". When I told the vet's receptionist (who is also his wife) that I was sure Kitty was a boy, she said "He is a boy. My husband (the vet!) calls all cats "she" and all dogs "he"!" We laughed about it and teased him for years!

Boy what a big boy! He's as big as my Daisy!

lovelyl 11-02-2012 04:48 AM

After reading all these posts, I don't feel as stupid now because half the time I can't tell for sure if they are male or female... Most of the tame ones, I get right, but the feral ones don't take kindly me sneaking up behind them and trying to lifting their tails while they are eating!

That's so funny. ROFLMAO. The kitty pictures on this post are as beautiful as the pictures of quilts in other post.
