The other day I was out back and I saw a cat, a very skinny cat. He meowed at me but wouldn't come close so I had some left over chicken in the fridge and threw it out for him. He ate all that up quickly and only if I was inside. The next day I go out back and there he is meowing at me again. We had just finished dinner and had pork chops left so I threw those out to him. This time he let me get about 5 feet from him. He would just sit there and meow and then hiss at me. Meow and hiss, like he wanted to come near me but was afraid. I could get a good look at him and I could tell it had been some time sense he had eaten. Oh it just makes me so mad. I haven't seen him in 2 days, I hope he is ok.
Why do ppl do things like this? We have an animal shelter where he would be taken care of. To me it is like taking your own child and dumping them in the woods to starve to death. Sorry I just had to vent. I have been thinking about this poor kitty being left like that. It's not right. |
I agree. My daughter has three dogs all were to be put down. Her Great Dane was found wandering the desert starving and weighing about 25 pounds.
My one dog was also dumped in the desert to die. |
We have a man across the street from us that has a female cat. She has her litters under my house. Keeps my dogs barking at her. She is so wild we can get close to her.
After she has had her kitten she will take them back to his house. I do wish he would get her spade so we don't end up with a lot of cat in the area. |
Is very upsetting to see that, if the animal was indeed dumped. I always give the benefit of the doubt. Our local shelter is always full to capacity. No cats are accepted. A few years ago a woman in town passed away and her family found 14 cats in her house. No one could get near them and they all took off before they could be adopted to anybody.I also had a female cat that every once in a while disappeared and I later found out she was a few door down, happy as a clam, and making me look bad.
|
Before the economy got bad the local humane society would spay and give check ups on ferral cats for free. We would take the cats down and had them fixed then let them free again in the same area. The lady down the street fed them but they were no longer reproducing. This practice was encourage by the shelter.
|
LALALALALALA I am not listening. I can't take it. I have an abandoned kitten that is now 25 lbs of spoiled bad boy.
|
I have been adopted by a mommy cat and her three kittens  I am feeding them for the moment , but I know they need to go to the animal control , makes me sad . They are ferral and won't let anyone near them .

A stray small gray cat has been hanging around for the past few days. I'm thinking it's a girl - she seems to have an injured left front paw because she's favoring it - and she has the prettiest greenish gray eyes.
I don't want another cat. I don't want another cat. I don't want another cat. I'm feeding it until I can catch it and take it to a no-kill shelter. She? seems to recognize "cat food" because when I set it out she started eating it. |
I don't understand it either, our furry babies were always treated just like our children. They may even be better behaved than the kids.lol
|
Our Apartment complex is near the edge of town. We have a wooded area behind us and animals are always showing up out back but this poor kitty was the first one that looked starved. It just makes me sick.
|
Sorry if the following sounds harsh, but...People who do this to animals are not worth the powder to blow them up, same goes for those who abuse animals. I have an adorable plump 15 yr. old cat. and love her so much.
|
I have no respect for people who treat animals as disposable pets. They are loving and living beings who depend on us. My babies are spoiled and loved. I don't let them go outside for fear of what might happen. I have a beautiful gray cat that has been dumped here. He gets fed daily. If I could get close enough to him I would take him in to be fixed. I'm working on it.

This made me cry, and I don't want to cry alone, so grab the tissues and read on..........
A PET'S TEN COMMANDMENTS 1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you is likely to be painful. 2. Give me time to understand what you want of me 3. Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my well-being. 4. Don't be angry with me for long and don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainment, but I have only you. 5. Talk to me. Even if I don't understand your words, I do understand your voice when speaking to me. 6. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it. 7. Before you hit me, before you strike me, remember that I could hurt you, and yet, I choose not to bite you. 8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, I have been in the sun too long, or my heart might be getting old or weak. 9. Please take care of me when I grow old. You too, will grow old. 10 On the ultimate difficult journey, go with me please. Never say you can't bear to watch. Don't make me face this alone. Everything is easier for me if you are there, because I love you so. ~Take a moment today to thank God for your pets. Enjoy and take good care of them. Life would be a much duller, less joyful experience without God's critters. ~Now please pass this on to other pet owners. We do not have to wait for Heaven, to be surrounded by hope, love, and joyfulness. It is here on earth and has four legs! Carol B |
It makes me furious also. Last year, just before we were to leave for NZ, our dog treed a cat. I brought him in and hope she would go home. Well it turned out she had taken up residence in our shed. She did the same meow, hiss, meow, hiss, and looked half starved. I did not want another cat, but DH said, you can't let her starve (I would have caved soon anyway) so I would take food out and when I went in she would eat, eventually she let me touch her briefly...well long story short, it turned out she was pregnant and had 4 kittens. I actually lost sleep worrying about what to do with them when we left for NZ as it was getting cold at night here in PA. A sweet lady at church that has a farm and a little girl who loves cats, took the kittens, we had the mamma vetted and boarded her until we came home. We had her spayed and she is now a very spoiled house cat, a calico and named Patches. We also had 4 dogs at one time 2 dumped and 2 shelter animals. All my animals are spayed and or neutered, and very loved. Can't understand how people can dump animals like that, I understand there are pets that wander off, but we live in a rural area, and animals are dumped frequently.
Bless all of you who have helped abandoned animals in any way. |
Personally speaking, I think people that dump animals should be shot, no questions asked.

I started feeding the neighbor's kittens when they would attack me as I was taking the trash out, at first just table scraps, well one day the two of them was waiting outside for their food and all I had left was some egg noodles, wide ones. The yellow kitten was scarfing them down so fast, that he started choking, he wouldn't let me near him to help, and i think he went off and died choking on the egg noodles, I felt so terrible, never saw him again. Well after that ordeal, I took the other kitten in, no more scraps, regular kitten food, milk, the whole nine yards. I still have her to this day, which has been 6 years now, plus a daughter of hers. They are both fixed, and very well taken care of. They are just as much family as our children are. I still have a hard time fixing egg noodles to this day. Poor yellow fellow.

Some people have no business getting pets. We've had strays dropped off many times in our area because we're out in the country. Instead of people taking them to the animal shelters they go for a drive & dump them off in the country. It doesn't make sense.
|
Our latest foster is an old old dog- the vet thinks about 14 years old. He has no fur on his back, and hemangiosarcomas (cancer spots) that have to be taken off. He was clearly a loved pet at one time. He's a total sweetheart. And he was found dumped way out in the country in MO.
Doing rescue, it would just shock you the things people do to animals. I think that perhaps his people died or went to a nursing home and someone just thought he would wander into a better place???? He lost 16 teeth last week at his dental, because his mouth was a total mess, and will have the cancers taken off next week. And he has already found a home with the young couple that sometimes fosters for us. His name is Ichabod and the last years of his life will be safe and happy. Last year, I got a mother and dad and a litter of three pups less than 5 weeks old- dumped about a mile from the shelter, because it was closed. WTF? I keep saying that I'm going to take a break from rescue, but unfortunately, there is no shortage of animals to save. |
I used to work at a pet store and pets would get dumped there :( My two cats were rescues that a woman brought in after the mother got hit by a car. Another girl got a black lab pup that got abandoned. Another time, a woman brought in two half starved, very young kittens, covered in fleas - she said that some one opened a car door and dumped them out on the curb and she brought them to us. Another time a box with 5 kittens was left in the middle of an aisle. Some eople are assholes and shouldn't have a pet.
|
Our barn is close to the road so we get a lot of cats dumped off here. There must be close to 20 cats in the barn now. We just keep feeding them and we don't have a mouse or squirrel problem.

But people who abandon these poor animals should be ashamed of themselves. I live in Ohio where it gets pretty cold and these idiots would drop off animals in the middle of winter too. |
Growing up we lived on a farm and people were always dumping unwanted pets near our house. We even once had a shetland pony show up. That was after a tornado went through but no one ever claimed him. Daddy kept him for years until the grandkids didn't ride him anymore then gave him to a man for his two daughters. We called all the local horse farms but still no one claimed him. Someone had shot him with buckshot so after Momma nursed him back to health that became his name. We know he belonged to someone because he had a clipped mane and tale when he arrived.

my mom when she was living found cat with rope tied on her neck cutting into her skin, her and step dad took it in, turned out to be full blood persian, so beautiful and sweet. I have took in dogs and found homes for them, stories turned out wonderful. cant save world but can make a difference.

What is most disturbing about such stories is that so called "people" who abuse animals are only one step away from abusing humans. I'm sure there are those who won't think abandoning an animal is the same thing as out right abuse but IMHO, abuse is abuse, and totally heartless.
Put me down for several rescues. We took in Missy almost three years ago weh we realized her owners were no longer feeding her and winter was approaching. I was so tempted to call the authorities but was afraid they'd say she wandered off and wanted her back, just to dodge any legal trouble. Several of us in the neighborhood know the true story so we "watch" to make sure they don't get any more pets; if they do, we will call. |
I have a cat who came through our property who was so skinny that I started feeding her, took me a month to get near her. I just adopted an abandoned black german shepherd who came from a kill shelter in KY, she is such a sweet dog but way underfed. It often makes me wonder how people could do that to their animals.

Blessing to all of you who take in these precious little ones. One of my Goldens is a rescue, she was close to death when we took her- from a so called breeder. We took her to find a home, she found one all right- here with us. Our Anna is beautiful and healthy now and a special part of our family.

My DG was 5 when they were going to take Mokie to the shelter and begged me to take him. He is now an overweight, very lazy, spoiled fat cat, which I love to death. I lost him a few years ago as he pushed out the screen during a thunderstorm chasing another cat. We looked that night, but couldn't find him. I had just taken a sleeping pill. The next morning I ended up in the hospital for a week. I think the only reason they let me out when they did was I kept crying about my Mokie. We put out 2 cages and caught him down the street and a different cat in my yard. He is such a joy to my life! I wish I could save them all! |
Boy, I am right there with you venting about people who do not take care of their pets and then either abuse or abandon them! There is truly nothing that makes me angrier! We live on a farm just outside town limits and people are always dumping unwanted animals.
One time we had a beautiful spaniel type dog show up in the middle of winter...he definitely had belonged to someone because his grooming had been kept up. Of course, we fed him and tried to find his owner. Well, I came home one day from school to discover he AND our dog (our beautiful Border Collie who always stayed at home) were both gone! DH was on a business trip so I looked everywhere for them...we live on 160 acres with several outbuildings. I checked with all the neighbors. I called the town's dog catcher who told me he had a black and white dog but it was a female. Long story short...4 days later, I had a phone call and our dog was in 'doggy jail' at the county animal shelter 20 miles away. He had been sent there by our town's dog catcher who obviously needed a lesson on the difference between a male and a female dog. I immediately left school and headed there to get my dog...and when I got there, I was chastised by a worker for allowing my dog to stray. Now, mind you, our dog had never gone anywhere until this dog was 'dumped' at our house! Now, we have the wireless fencing and our dog cannot go...but we still get dogs/cats dumped all the time. We feed the cats at the barn and they come and go. Any dog who gets dumped, we call the animal shelter. Our dog is 'expensive' enough to take care of; just because we have farm ground does not mean we want to provide for all the unwanted animals, also. |
I have 2 rescued animals. My cat Trouble showed up on our door step 12 years ago. Her neck scarred from who knows what. She's terrifyed of trash bags and beer. Dumped in one?? we'll never know. She's lived up to her name, but she's so sweet and loving. She now has cancer, but she's safe and cared for, and will be for the rest of her life.
Our dog Gadget was found at the drs. office. We watched him sneak in 3 times while we waited our turn. He was sitting out side when we left. We scooped him up and took him home. He's been my youngest DD's best friend for 3 years. He has a painfull shortened leg. Sometime as a puppy, his leg was broken, and not treated. It damaged the growth plate. Now he has a herniated disk in his back. He's such a sweet little guy, and some one threw him away. Despite their expensive health problems, we take care of them, do with out so they have vet care, and love them while they are with us. I get so mad when people neglect or abuse animals. They should suffer whe neglect/abuse they dish out. I have trapped abandened animals many times. Animal Controll knew me by site. I would drive the animals to the shelter myself so I wouldn't have to wait for AC to get to me. My area at the time was a popular dumping ground. |
Oh, Anna sure is a beauty...cant believe someone dumped her!
We're in the country near a college town. Every Spring, when the students go home, pets end up being dumped out here. Mostly cats, and these are pets, so they have NO IDEA how to live in the woods. I think they kids think they can live off mice or something. A few years back, it was a beautiful pit bull...with his ball! He was SOOO sweet, and no one claimed him! I couldnt afford another dog, so AC had to be called. Man did I cry my eyes out on that one! |
I think God has a place for people that dump unwanted animals. These people will suffer the results - it will be HOT where they go.
|
How long do "humane shelters" keep the animals?
If not very long, they should have BIG SIGNS at the entrance saying "If no one adopts your pet within X number of days, it will be killed because we don't have the money to keep it alive any longer than that." Once upon a time I thought they kept the animals fed and cared for until they were adopted. |
We have a "no kill" shelter along with the others. The length of time depends on the area. My brother's dog was put down in three days, others a couple of weeks. The problem with "no kill" is they are limited in the number of spaces.

He is back this morning. He is so pretty. I put some more chicken out and I have never seen a cat eat so fast. Here is a pic of him, it doesn't show exactly how skinny he is. This morning he just growled at me.
|
unfortunately if they are not adopted they will be put down. As it is right now a dumped pet is dying a slow death by starvation and that is not right either. Atleast if they were put in a shelter they would have a better chance of survival and maybe get a new home. It makes me sick to think of an animal starving to death.
|
Over the years I have had 6 kittens that had been dumped, I have 4 at the moment. years ago a poodle was dumped somewhere and made his way to my neighborhood and I had him for about 8-9 yr.s I will never understand why people dump animals, they don't always find good people to taked them in and take care of them.
All my cats have been neutered, declawed, and never outside. I have a big dog that an old couple did not take good care of, we have given him a great life. |
Some of you have seen pics of how isolated I'am on this country road, and we get literally tons of pets dumped out here! I get so mad! Even litters of kittens and puppies! At one time I had 12 stray cats outside to feed. It broke my heart to call the animal control center! I just couldn't possibly take care of them all!
Would they dump their kids off if they were hard to potty train or.......!!! Oh don't get me started! I could rant and rave! Bless those of you who love and take care of your pets and help those less unfortunate critters! |
