Don't feel too badly; you are not alone! I can bake breads & big cinnamon rolls from scratch, and I can not bake a normal cake to save me! Used to have a neighbor that asked to be alerted when I was baking a cake so she could watch as wierd things happen in the oven when mine bake too!

these pictures of the cakes were my best laugh this year. had a similar experience once, and cried, but every crumb was eaten out of dishes and ice cream......so this was a really good memory...

LanaCindy 01-14-2011 06:23 PM

you should have colored the frosting red put in center and down the side and called it a volcano cake! Still looks Yummy!

raynhamquilter 01-14-2011 06:55 PM

My name isn't BETTY CROCKER either.

Some very good memories have been made in our family with cakes that flopped! It always seemed to happen to the same kid on his birthday too. He is now 35 and we look back and laugh at the baking disasters that became his birthday cakes!

linhawk 01-14-2011 07:25 PM

Oh my gosh. That reminds me of one I made for the MIL of my 1st marriage, many years ago. I used green icing on the cake which was too warm when I frosted it and it broke in pieces too. What a disaster. Hmmm, she never did like me. Wonder if it was that cake? haaa. So funny to think of it now. Thanks for the laugh.

Put with chocolate pudding in dishes turns out great.

jitkaau 01-14-2011 10:45 PM

I bet it still tastes GOOD.

froggy 01-15-2011 02:59 AM

maria, it has been years (Iwas13) when our "disaster cake" came about. I openrd a window over the coolinf cake and the mugs that had been on the upper part of the window. fell and messed up the cake. We stirred it and adeed whipped cream and fudge frosting! it is still an all time favorite in my family

Hosta 01-15-2011 03:40 AM

I don't bake anymore no one eats it but me and I don't need the extra weight but your cake looks good did anyone try it?

quilt crazee 01-15-2011 06:19 AM

years ago, my sister called she neededhelp!! her cupcakes weren't turning out & they were for school. She wanted the SECRET. She had tried everything! Drove over there-she had over 60 cupcakes strewn over the counters--burned, undercooked, forgot an ingredient, over creative, ect. She tried from scracth & box. I had not believed her!-took her to the bakery!!-not enough time for anything else. I still LAUGH when I think how hard she tried to something so simple& it just didn't work!

cmagee84 01-15-2011 06:26 AM

This thread makes me want to mess up a cake on purpose and try some of these.

retiac 01-15-2011 08:30 AM

I know how you feel about messed up cake made one for halloween party, I make buttercream icing from scratch but it was warm here and the icing melted and ran all over, the cake slid and we had fun with it anyway did I tell you that the icing was purple

This thread also reminds of the time that I was preparing for my step-son's graduation party. I had purchased a full sheet cake from the bakery, decorated in hot pink and black frosting. As I was carrying it in the house to the serving table, it slid off the cardboard box it was in, and landed...you guessed it...upside down right on the light colored carpet! Needless to say, the cake was ruined, my carpet was a mess and I was freaking out. The guests were coming in less than an hour and I didn't know what to do. Anyway, so I called the bakery and told them what happened. They whipped up another cake for me in about a half hour and gave it to me at no charge! The party went off without a hitch, but I can only imagine that there is still some pink stains in that carpet...

Ditter43 01-15-2011 10:42 AM

I've had that happen too! If it tastes good, nobody cares if it's a little lopsided!

dixiechunk 01-15-2011 03:19 PM

Oh I am so sorry but I can't stop laughing. You must have a great sense of humor to post those pics.

Alondra 01-15-2011 06:01 PM

Ah, but Dahling... you put it in a big clear glass bowl, add some whipped cream (and some brandy, if it's for adults) and call it trifle. <G> Never, ever let chocolate go to waste!

kbs 01-15-2011 06:03 PM

My family would have eaten it. I'm sure it tasted good, putting it in a dish with ice cream was mentioned. Good idea.

LucyInTheSky 01-15-2011 06:40 PM

Hahahahahaha, omg, those cakes are hilarious. Thanks for the laugh

cheryl rearick 01-15-2011 10:43 PM

OH, please forgive me for having a chuckle..... At least one was good, and you must have been trying to watch everyone's waist to buy sugar free. :) don't give up,

cheryl rearick 01-15-2011 10:45 PM

actually when looking at your cake it resembles a volcano after eruption :) :) :) not laughting at you only with you (((hugs)))

Caroltee 01-15-2011 11:10 PM

You ALL are the greatest.. Not only helping to save others in the sewing room but the kitchen also. I bet if I needed advice on doing my own plumbing I could get it right here. This is officially my new Book of Knowledge Board. Can’t live without it…. Just ask and you will receive. Great ideas for salvaging the birthday cake. I will have to remember the next time it happens to me……. OH YES.. it has happened… but I didn’t Show & Tell.  :D

chickadeee55 01-16-2011 03:59 AM

Too funny, if that happened to my mom when we were growing up, she would put the crumbled cake in a pan and make pudding and put that on top of it. It was a good mistake then!

Like you, my first reaction is to laugh when I saw the second pic. You know why? It's happened to me before. So many times when I first learned to bake. :-D

QuickStitch 01-20-2011 12:53 AM

That looks like something I would do. Sorry that it turned out like that for you. You just have to laugh at yourself and eat it anyway. I do.

dungeonquilts 01-20-2011 05:36 AM

Look at this way, you have taught us all a good lesson in baking a cake. As mention it would have made good a "snow ball" cake....My sister takes cake and puts in a glass of milk it would have not gone to waste.
