It was my son's birthday yesterday and he wanted a strawberry cake. Of course, I made him one. I decided to make it marbled and had left over chocolate mix. I made two small chocolate cakes. I made the mistake of getting sugar free frosting (what is the point of that) and that thing doesn't spread easy. The cake got stuck to the mold, broke into a few pieces, I tried to put it together with frosting and it broke even more. I should leave the baking to those who know how to do it.

Not very appealing

I don't mean to laugh, but that birthday cake is funny. Although, I'm sure it taste good. Anything chocolate is good.

You're one courageous lady. I don't believe I'd have told this one on myself. Can you pick one up at Walmart and garnish it with fresh strawberries? LOL

mommamac 01-13-2011 05:50 PM

when this happens in my family, we scoop it into small bowls, top it with ice cream and call it 'cake in a dish' - still tastes yummy!

Maride 01-13-2011 05:51 PM

Laugh all you want. Jorge took the pictures because he says it maybe shouldn't be shown in public.

No Walmart in NYC, and too late to try to rescue it, but we had a good laugh. The strawberry one turned out OK. It was only the chocolate leftover that misbehaved.

I remember years ago when I baked a two layer cake (I love to bake and am pretty good at it) which came out great, I frosted it and set the plate aside. As I picked it up to bring to the table, it simply disolved into a pile of crumbs with frosting mixed in. My kids ate it in bowls with spoons...never waste anything you know.

Laura3 01-13-2011 05:57 PM

Looks good to me...I would eat it!!

BETTY62 01-13-2011 06:00 PM

And this is how cake balls came to be... when you have a goof up, just dump the baked cake and frosting into a large bowl together. Mix well and roll into balls. Let cool or if you have time, freeze. Spear balls with toothpicks, dip into melted chocolate and let cool until chocolate hardens. Yum, Yum, can't eat just one. Works with all cakes and any type of icing.

That sounds good enough to do on purpose!

I am sure I will have an opportunity to try this.

QuiltingGrannie 01-13-2011 06:06 PM

I messed up a strawberry cake once. It was in all kinds of pieces and I tossed marshmallows into it, mixed it all back up into the sheet pan and served. Don't remember if I heated it up a little again or not.
Everyone loved it so much they wanted me to make it again! I never could duplicate it.

Now thats a good plan. No chocolate goes to waste.

Jingle 01-13-2011 06:10 PM

I only make cakes in a 9x13" pan and ice it in the pan, cut and eat. Nothing sticks or falls apart. I've done this at least the last 40 years. Before that I tried the round cake pans, turned out okay, too much handling.

Quiltforme 01-13-2011 06:13 PM

Homemade is the best no matter how it looks!

GraceyFaas 01-13-2011 06:18 PM

The thing with chocolate cake is - cut it into small squares, fold in whipped cream and add strawberries or go with caramel swirled in. could make it look scrumpdilitious.

sueisallaboutquilts 01-13-2011 06:30 PM

Maria, you're so funny!!! Happy Birthday to your little guy, funny cake or not!! lol :D:D

I would have just called it ART, Thanks for sharing the story

oatw13 01-13-2011 06:43 PM

Looks good to me! lol Put some in a bowl and add ice cream on top. Yummy!

A tip for any frosting to get it to spread easier: I leave the can of frosting on the stove top while the cake is baking and cooling. When you are ready to frost, just open it and stir it and it will be so smooth. Or, you can just warm it in the microwave for a few seconds at a time to thin it out a little. After you ice the cake, if you let it sit the frosting will harden up again.

Also, to keep the cake from sticking in the pan, cut a circle of wax paper or parchment paper and put it in the bottom of your pan before adding the batter. Then when you take it out of the oven, cut around the edges and turn it upside down. The cake will drop out. Then peel the wax paper off. That's the way my grandma used to do it and how my mom still does it.

:)

sewgull 01-13-2011 06:45 PM

Were these pictures of the cake taken before or after the party?

Thanks for the laugh. Better luck next time.

Amen (laughter). We put it in a bowl with pudding, fruit, whipped cream, splash of sherry if you are an adult, and call it a Trifle.

Airwick156 01-13-2011 08:51 PM

I know why I sew and not bake....Because with sewing....you don't get fat...if you bake, you have to eat it and then you get fat. :) lol

DonnaB 01-14-2011 05:20 AM

I am so sorry, you started my day off with a good laugh, but I hear you.

sik1010 01-14-2011 05:26 AM

Sorry for your mishap, but anyone that bakes has had them (even when they're good at it), so don't be so hard on yourself. Besides, it was edible, so all was not lost! Hope the birthday was great!

LindaR 01-14-2011 06:20 AM

I hate to bake, looks like something that I would turn out...LOL, just DH and I now and boughten cookies are good too...

arimuse 01-14-2011 06:50 AM

OH MY GOSH! Been there! lol
get a huge clear glass bowl, take the cakes and cut into bite size pcs. (scrape off gobs of frosting, you dont need to salvage all the cake, you just want the cake parts)Start to layer in the bowl, (forget frosting! it will kill you!) add: cake bites, strawberries, cool whip or whip cream, then the other cake bites (w/ choc cake I would drizzle a LITTLE choc sauce or choc like hersheys for making choc milk), another fruit (buy whatever is cheapest, I can usu find pineapple and banannas on sale) cool whip til u reach the top of the bowl. cover w/ whip & sprinkle w/ toasted coconut.
for an adult only cake, when you layer in the cake bites sprinkle cake w/ a little rum or orange liqueur
always think out of the (cake) box lol! share t

drdolly 01-14-2011 07:10 AM

So sorry, but the picture was kinda funny. Hope everything was okay. At least you did try.

trolleystation 01-14-2011 10:56 AM

Get some whipped topping and a large spoon and go for it. Looks delicious.

gmaybee 01-14-2011 11:16 AM

I love to bake and usually bake from scratch. I baked a chocolate cake from the recipe on the Hersheys cocoa can. What a disaster that was. It stuck to the pan and was a mess. I cut it into chunks and layered it in a trifle bowl with Cool Whip, chocolate pudding and the cake then sprinkled english toffee bits on the top. Nobody except my husband knew about the disaster of the cake and why I made this dessert instead. Cake balls mentioned in other posts are great also.

laurlync 01-14-2011 11:47 AM

I made a cake years ago using a new recipe. When I took it out of the oven, it went totally flat and would not come out of the pan. I scraped it all into a bowl and looked at the recipe again. Comparing it to other recipes, I realized it was short 1 cup of flour. I made another and it came out beautiful. I frosted and decorated it. In the end, I threw most of the pretty cake out because everyone wanted the crumbs in the bowl. They were extra moist and tasted great - no frosting needed.

Lady Jane 01-14-2011 12:10 PM

Hey these cakes are usually the BEST !

zyxquilts 01-14-2011 12:25 PM

We have a grocery store nearby that has a wonderful bakery - they bake delicious cakes! My favorite one is a long layer cake, like 5" X 5" X 18" long...for only $9.99!

Yarn or Fabric 01-14-2011 02:10 PM

I am so sorry!
I tell you what - you should get one of the Cake Mix Dr books - they are pretty much a sure bet no matter your baking skill - I swear by them :)

sdarga 01-14-2011 04:31 PM

Thanks for a good laugh. I once tried to bake a loaf of bread and it came out so hard you could of used to brick a house. Thanks for making me smile.
