Windows 10 vs Windows 7

I guess I'm looking for your experiences if any. I had Windows 7, switched to 10 and now have gone back to 7. I would have used 10, but I kept getting some weird warnings, ghost deletions from my mail program (Outlook) and it so frustrated my tech guy that he suggested going back to Windows 7.....it's suppose to be supported through 2020....anyone else hear that?

Stitchnripper 07-23-2016 01:49 PM

It's explained here pretty well, I think. Mr. Google has lots more info if you are interested but it seems you will be okay til 2020 as your tech guy stated.

grma33 07-23-2016 01:57 PM

yep my computer guy said the same thing and not to get 10
i`m still using 7

I upgraded to Windows 10 on Friday and I can not access my email. I have Windows Live Mail and everything I tried I still can't get it to work. Other than that it's not to bad, I didn't lose anything in the process.

thimblebug6000 07-23-2016 04:45 PM

I put the free version of 10 on my laptop that had 7 on it.... I just use it like before.... although I haven't figured everything out.... I'm okay with that but hope to some day get it to LOOK similar to what I want it to. I use yahoo email addresses so don't have to consider what it would do with my outlook. I HATE having to change things every few years... and still have my original PC.... right now... on XP.... :p

Edited to add.... when I first tried to download the free version...after 2 hours... it said unsuccessful..... so I deactivated my AVG anti virus program.... and another 2 hours later.... I had a successful download.

nonnie60 07-23-2016 04:55 PM

I got the free up grade and it's been fine, no problems.

Sandra in Minnesota 07-23-2016 05:35 PM

My computer guy said not to go to windows 10. He has had several clients that he switched back to 7.

Thank you for the link. I found this link http://www.pcworld.com/article/30923...10.html#slide1 which gave me a better understanding of what would change if I did switch to 10.

Anniedeb 07-23-2016 09:20 PM

We have not upgraded either. DH is a "techie" and he won't do it! He says that 7 will be supported till 2020 also.

sandy l 07-24-2016 03:20 AM

We're on Windows 8 and have been getting "reminders" that we have until the end of this month to switch to 10 free, and if we don't like it, within 30 days we can switch back to 8. But if 8 is going to be supported until 2020, I'd just as soon keep 8. Took me too long to figure 8 out:)

katesnanna 07-24-2016 05:22 AM

I tried Windows 10 which I didn't find hard to use. I just couldn't access my Embroidery Designs and as I have thousands or tens of thousands there is a lot of money invested. A guy at the local electronics store said the same happened to his wife but she found a free program to cover that, trouble is he didn't know the name of it. Does anyone know of this program. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance

Mine recommended switching to it, he was/is part of the test team. It's been great, no problems. More problems with this forum, constantly freezing up due to "long running script" - unfortunately, when you have slow internet, all the advertising screws one up. Makes me just leave the forum for that day. And, it only happens on this forum, nowhere else, so I know it's not the computer.

I upgraded to Windows 10 last week and my Windows Live mail works fine. Try contacting your Internet Service Provider. I bit the bullet & upgraded as the end of this month is the last that Windows 10 will be free. My computer guy had upgraded all his clients to Windows 10 and feels the bugs have been resolved.

Wanabee Quiltin 07-24-2016 06:06 AM

Windows 7 !!!!!! I have Windows 10 on my computer now but it's leaving soon, too much trouble.

sewnsewer2 07-24-2016 06:07 AM

I bought a new laptop with 10 on it. I'm not having any problems. It's pretty much like 7. On the otherhand, my sister upgraded to 10 & her mouse keeps flying all over the place & her screen goes nuts too.

Yooper32 07-24-2016 06:37 AM

I am more surprised than anyone that I have had very little problems cropping up since I upped to 10 about 5 months ago and I am 84, so guess it can't be too bad. I don't use any computer-based e-mail program however. We have a Go Daddy account here. It is kind of interesting, poking around and seeing what works and what doesn't and I have not gotten into any corners where I can't get out...yet. My laptop is over four years old.

angelmama22 07-24-2016 07:09 AM

Every time someone posts something about Windows 10 I read it with great interest. I was gifted a complete version of 10 last Christmas and have yet to download it. I'm really waffling about diving in and starting to learn a new program. I don't spend a large amount of time on the computer or internet, but when I'm there, I want to be able to navigate everything quickly and get to where I want to go without any glitches! I may download it on my laptop first and just play around with it to test if I really want to download to PC.

Rose Bagwell 07-24-2016 07:31 AM

I did the same as you , changed , went back to 7. Windows 10 needs more work or instructions for me to completely understand their program. I am not computer savvy.

ManiacQuilter2 07-24-2016 07:41 AM

I dislike all these upgrades because they all seem to have problems. That is why I am still on XP.

linkd 07-24-2016 08:14 AM

I inadvertently made the transition to 10. (hit the wrong button and went to bed) I'm okay with 10, no problems. We were still on 7 as well (one experience with windows 8 was more than enough... so bad that there isn't a windows 9).
Except for losing places in games (I was at about level 610 in Patchworkz had to start back at 1!) and that they still don't give us basic solitare etc anymore (I guess they figured that we all knew how to use the mouse by now LOL) I can live with it. The art on the opening page is consistently beautiful. Time moves on and so does technology. I wouldn't trade even something as bad as Windows 8 for my old gold print on black background dumb terminal. But if I could get Tetris for the Apple IIGS ( the one with the Russian circus theme) it would be a lot harder decision to make.

lblank42 07-24-2016 08:31 AM

I upgraded to Windows 10 (the free upgrade) and I haven't had any problems with my email. I use gmail. However, I have had problems with the facial recognition feature. Need to contact them about that. Otherwise, it's fine.

cathyvv 07-24-2016 08:39 AM

I'm keeping windows 7 until it (or I) die of old age or 2020, whichever comes first. My DH has 10, as does my sister and they are both satisfied with it. DH upgraded from 8.1, which was awful, so 10 is an improvement.

Then I'll probably get an Apple computer.

Chasing Hawk 07-24-2016 09:51 AM

I fixed my issue with Windows Live Mail. I did some more digging on the internet and found this:
http://appuals.com/windows-live-mail...to-windows-10/

After following the instructions, my email program opens right up. I had to put the program in compatibility mode for Windows 7.

crafty pat 07-24-2016 10:16 AM

I bought a new computer when they dropped Vista. I now have ten and the only problem I have had is it freezes up and I have to turn it off and re start it then it sometimes just turns its self off when I am in the middle of something. My DD told me she has this problem with hers and so does every one she knows that has ten. Her DH got so fed up with his doing that he had eight put on his new computer.

quilt9226 07-24-2016 12:15 PM

I had windows 7 and loved it until the computer croaked - it was an epic hard drive failure so bought new computer which came with Windows 10. After help from my nephew who is a techie, I have managed to figure stuff out and I like it. The problem is thinking in apps. The one thing I do not like is downloading pdf documents. There is an extra step but for the most part, it's working for me. I have QuiltPro 6 and there was no problem installing the program on Windows 10.

MarleneC 07-24-2016 12:22 PM

I had 8.1 and was quite happy with it but I switched to Windows 10 on my laptop and except for the start/end part and getting some updated drivers for a couple things it is working great. I put W10 on my Desktop and disaster--one problem after another and finally I went back to 8.1. My tech says to do a clean upgrade which means taking everything off and then using the DVD/USB version instead of the download version. I don't really know if it is worth all that trouble.

ugh! this is the exact problem i fear if i switch over to 10 plus i have a pricy to me amazing lettering software i fear i will lose and cannot afford to replace.also I belong to some embroidery yahoo groups and the digitizer themselfs won't cange to 10 their digitizing software is very expensive.............

MarleneC 07-24-2016 12:29 PM

I have 8.1 and live it--but when I upgraded to 10 I had to get rid of Edge and open pdf's with Adobe and I could not even get to Facebook website--kept getting an error message and my images would not appear in my gmails. After googling and buying a program which said it would fix those issues (it didn't & I got a refund) I went back to 8.1. I plan to put Classic Shell on which changes the start/shut down part and I should be happy. I do not want to remove everything from the computer and install W10 from USB or DVD.

I use Vikings program and with W10 I couldn't do my embroidery program until I went in and downloaded the latest driver from the HV website. Also, had to fix SewIConz to see the designs again. Maybe checking your software site you will find an updated driver.

wendiq 07-24-2016 12:53 PM

sandy I.....not too sure about Windows 8 being supported till 2020. I thought it was just Windows 7....I'd research it if I were you.

NJ Quilter 07-24-2016 01:00 PM

Windows 7 here also. And like the other poster who said - keeping it until it or I die or 2020 whichever comes first! I'll probably keep it well after it's no longer supported provided I have no issues. I have W 10 at work. It's ok but it still just annoys me. I also hate that you can't just plain old buy software anymore. It's all subscription based now which just really gets my panties in a bunch. Hate being ripped off. But that's just a whole 'nother rant!

wendiq 07-24-2016 01:19 PM

Thank you all that replied. I think my computer guy was correct in putting me back into Windows 7. It works for me and I am thinking I will either be dead or have a laptop by 2020 so I'm happy!

joivey 07-24-2016 01:20 PM

I prefer Windows 7 and when I bought my last computer I purposefully found one with Windows 7. My computer kept trying to upgrade to 10 and then I would get a message to install it, which I did not want to do. I finally talked to tech support at Costco and they fixed it so the computer would no longer try to upgrade to 10. I always buy anything technical like computers, tablets, etc at Costco because you then get free tech support 24/7 for the life of the product.... and they are located in Florida and speak perfect English.

Aurora 07-24-2016 10:32 PM

Windows 10 was installed automatically on my W8 computer. I spent hours trying to find my email. Fortunately, it was easier to remove.

SewingSew 07-25-2016 04:24 AM

All of the computers in our house have Windows 7. We just bought 3 refurbished laptops and had the option of "upgrading" to Windows 10. We're all dreading the end of support for 7 in 2010. I prefer using my own hard drive to store my personal info. I don't like the cloud. Everybody in computerland wants their hand up your skirt and in your pocketbook. Whatever happened to privacy? We've all given away our private information, our photos, and everything we do is being tracked online. Most of our laptops and devices can take our photos and fingerprint us and know where we are or what we're doing at any given moment. Voice recognition is being incorporated into our tv remotes, etc., allowing the ability for anyone to hear what's happening in our homes. I read recently that passwords are going to be eliminated soon because technology has been developed that allows the computer to recognize you through your keystroke patterns and so on. The cloud, Facebook, Google, even Microsoft Office are all part of a bigger picture that eliminates our privacy. Unless you live off the grid, I don't know how you remain linked into society without being part of the collective. If I want to be online, I know it's inevitable that I'll eventually have to end up with Windows 10, or switch to Apple or Linux. XP and Windows 7 are about as perfect as an operating system gets, in my humble opinion. The bugs have mostly been worked out and I also have a collection of older software that I won't be able to use without them. Even if they work out the kinks of Windows 10, I don't think I'll ever be happy to switch. But it's either that or be without a computer, and I do love my computer...

Becky's Crafts 07-25-2016 05:19 AM

I didn't want to upgrade to Windows 10, but my computer crashed & the new (used) one came with it. I can't share my pictures now as they're too big & I can't figure out how to resize them. My computer used to be a fun activity, but no more!!! Last night I was ready to chuck it! I will have to buy software so I can share again. Maybe in a few months.

Maureen 07-25-2016 06:15 AM

I had trouble with the upgrade. My drivers were out of date and they wanted 39.00 for a repair. I'm Leary of that

shasta5718 07-25-2016 06:51 AM

Tried to use 10 and it kept freezing up my computer. Went back to 8. Still have a few problems since the try.

sewnclog 07-25-2016 07:34 AM

I too have 10 on my computers. The only drawback that I don't like, I can't write click on anything to "print" it; like on pdf files. The computer will "Save" it, then I have to putz around trying to figure out HOW to print it. It works - eventually, but otherwise I think I can live with it (so far).

Quilter 53 07-25-2016 08:24 AM

Our computer was hi-jacked one morning by 10. They changed the X to close out the free download box to a "Yes, I want the download". Yeah, I tried to close out the box and ended up saying yes. Took over 4 hours to download. Didn't take long to figure it all out, and I don't think we lost anything. But when I turn on the computer, it wants to go to Chrome. I don't want Chrome, we use Mozilla. I hate that "they", whoever they are, are always trying to tell me what I want.
