I haven't seen any wooly worms yet, and I don't have a persimmon tree. Any Predictions of what this winter will be?

luvstitches 10-03-2011 02:47 AM

wow...haven't seen any of those wooly worms either.
Hmm...I'm afraid to hear what kind of winter we'll have this year. lol I live in the snow belt and we have plenty of snow when we don't have a bad winter. I'm so glad I quilt because I love it and always stay busy no matter what time of year it is.

Patty Patches 10-03-2011 02:56 AM

The only one I have seen was all a light yellowish color.

AlwaysQuilting 10-03-2011 03:46 AM

Our local weatherman said this will be year #2 of the La Nina and the second year is usually worse than the first. Oh Oh.

sewgull 10-03-2011 04:00 AM

In the south we have loads of acorns. If that means anything I would think cold. More acorns, more food for the squirrels to eat.

BMP 10-03-2011 04:00 AM

I heard its suppose to a very bad one with lots of snow storms, I am not looking forward to it at all.

suezquilts 10-03-2011 04:16 AM

I've seen the wooly cattipilliars and they don't have a wide dark center, just a blure of something. never seen them look this way before.
I'm buying new shovels.

Emmy Sue 10-03-2011 04:40 AM

Centre County in PA just had almost two inches of snow. Here in Eastern PA we've had rain almost every day during September. I hate to think what the winter will bring.

The only one I saw - so far - was also only yellow. Squeak (the cat) was watching it.

Lacelady 10-03-2011 05:01 AM

I don't know anything about woolly worms, but we have already had two record breaking winters here in Ireland. After the first, I thought nothing could top that, then the second came along and DID!

I don't think I can bear the thought of a third.

blueangel 10-03-2011 05:04 AM

If our winter is going to be anything like our summer, Look out.

dtippens 10-03-2011 05:19 AM

I saw a light brown wooly worm, tan around outter edges
what does these mean.

Glassquilt 10-03-2011 05:34 AM

Note to self: Go to grocery store and buy staples that don't require refrigeration or freezer.

athomenow 10-03-2011 05:37 AM

I heard that the dark bands are the cold snowy parts of the winter and the lighter bands are the mild part. So if he has really wide dark bands front and back it will be really cold beginning and ending with a milder stretch in the middle. Haven't seen any woolies this year at all. Wonder what that means?

athomenow 10-03-2011 05:40 AM

The is from the Farmer's Almanac:

For the winter of 2011–12, the Farmers’ Almanac is forecasting “clime and punishment,” a season of unusually cold and stormy weather. For some parts of the country, that means a frigid climate; while for others, it will mean lots of rain and snow.

The upcoming winter looks to be cold to very cold for the Northern Plains, parts of the Northern Rockies, and the western Great Lakes. In contrast, above-normal temperatures are expected across most of the southern and eastern U.S. Near-normal temperatures are expected in the Midwest and Far West, and in southern
Florida.

A very active storm track will bring much heavier-than-normal precipitation from the Southern Plains through Tennessee into Ohio, the Great Lakes, and the Northeast. Because of above normal temperatures, much of the precipitation will likely be rain or mixed precipitation, although, during February, some potent East Coast storms could leave heavy snow, albeit of a wet and slushy consistency.

An active Pacific Storm track will guide storm systems into the Pacific Northwest, giving it a wetter-than-normal winter.

Drier-than-normal weather will occur in the Southwest and Southeast corners of the nation.

Our "Mountain Ash" tree is usually always right on the money.

The tree's berries started to blush in JUNE. Then they turned full red about a month early and that means early winter.

Oddly.. our spider fall rush is not near as bad as usual, but that sure doesn't break my heart. Nothing like walking out the front door in the morning RIGHT THROUGH a nasty web. Gad.. I just HATE THAT...lol

Feather3 10-03-2011 06:08 AM

I live in central PA. Just south of me, in Center County, they had snow flurries over the weekend & also west of me. We barely hit 50 over the wekeend with nights in the low 40's. It's been raining for days.

So far I've only seen one wooly worm & it was almost all black. The center brown band was very narrow. The deer are also turning a very dark brown, which can also mean a bad winter. I'm not looking forward to this, as many areas here will still have roads & bridges closed due to the massive floods we had in early September. We had almost 16 inches of rain in September alone. I'm glad it wasn't snow.

I still have 2 juvenile hummingbirds hanging out. They're staying in my very large honeysuckle bush. The poor things sit all puffed up not far from the feeder. I'm hoping they'll soon migrate, as I don't want them to stay over winter. If they do stay it will take allot of work on my part to keep them alive until spring.

redkimba 10-03-2011 06:19 AM

I'm hoping for at least a semi-wet winter, but I have a feeling that it's not going to happen. (I hope to be wrong)

vicki reno 10-03-2011 06:23 AM

I have seen a handful and there is a difference of opinion among the worms. Some have a wide brown stripe meaning mild winter and some are almost all black meaning a hard winter. Even the worms can't agree this year!

romanojg 10-03-2011 06:24 AM

I've noticed in the years here that we don't have alot of really hot (100 degree) weather then we have colder winters and more snow; like last year. It's already in the 50's which is low for us already. I'm making my last trip to WV this year until after Easter; not taking chances on snow in the mountains. It's beautiful but not if you are traveling.

dtippens 10-03-2011 06:27 AM

it is light brown in the middle and tan fuzzy around outside

Peckish 10-03-2011 07:33 AM

We had a very cool and wet summer last year, a warm and wet winter with no snow, and another cool and wet summer this year. In fact, we didn't get above 80 until late August. It will be interesting to see what we get for weather this winter. I'd like a little bit of snow for Christmas...

JeannieT 10-03-2011 08:43 AM

we have seen both light and dark very wooly worms!!

RedGarnet222 10-03-2011 08:53 AM

Here in nevda we look at the pine trees. If they are really full of pine cones that means a tough winter. ps) Ours is really full this year.

Someone said that the farmer's almanac says hard winter too.

bamamama 10-03-2011 08:55 AM

I hope its not going to be cold this year. I moved to Alabama from NJ to escape the cold winters and last year I almost froze to death! I don't remember NJ winters making my body ache as bad as it does here.

athomenow 10-03-2011 09:43 AM

Do you think the air is more humid there? I hate those damp cold days and here in Ohio we have lots of those. It's rained almost every day for a few weeks.

COYOTEMAGIC 10-03-2011 12:30 PM

The Wooly Worm Festival isn't for a couple more weeks. http://www.woollyworm.com/ I'll let you know the outcome of the winning worms predictions

quiltpd 10-03-2011 12:56 PM

ICK Debra - that sounds perfectly awful no matter where you live.

Quiltbeagle 10-03-2011 02:44 PM

I live in north Florida and my miniature ponies got their winter coats almost OVERNIGHT about a month ago, even though the temperature was still about 99 degrees every day. I think it's going to be a cold winter!

watterstide 10-04-2011 02:49 AM

Well, for Michigan, they claim we are going to have a repeat of last year..not good news for me..we set records for cold and snow. :-(

dewie45 10-04-2011 03:18 AM

Well the report is that the persimmon seeds are spoons this year. I think that means shovels, for us at least. I don't know about the trees in Illinois. hehe

The squirrels are digging holes and burying the black walnuts like crazy here. The robins are still here, the Monarchs are gone, it is going to be 84 degrees today and warm weather the rest of the week. But then it could snow on Saturday. We Minnesotans never know from one day to the next. We enjoy each day when it's nice and cuss the others!!!!! I have heard that we are going to have a mild winter, and then I have heard (from the squirrels) that it is going to be a rough cold one. We had 1/4" of rain in September - it's gotta fall on us one way or the other - liquid or solid! We're gonna get it! It just gets frustrating when we have a 39 degree day and on that day we put away the shorts and tank tops and Berkies and 24 hours later we drag everything back out again!!!! How bout this one - "This is the day the Lord hath made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it." Would you believe I just saw on TV they are getting ready for College Hockey? See what I mean????? Enjoy the day! Edie

Joset 10-04-2011 04:10 AM

oh i hate to think of winter we had so much snow last year. so hopefully it is less this year.

This is picture of last winter & we are suppose to have a repeat in PA for this winter! Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh snow go away!

sailsablazin 10-04-2011 04:26 AM

I finally talked my DH into buying the best snow blower/garden tractor there is--a couple was moving to Utah into a condo and selling lots of their belongings. The snow is beautiful and plentiful here and this tractor saves our butts every winter. Even I can drive it (with a bit of a review). The neighbor claims that we need 3 winter warnings out there---storm warning, severe weather warning, and "Marcia's on the tractor" warning..LOL
(I do drive it a bit fast--get'er done!)

I hope it's not going to be like last years too!

We got dumped on every two weeks from christmas right thru february. I can sure use a mild winter!

My daughter was shoveling and telling me to hurry up with the camera! lol! It was freezing out!

sisLH 10-04-2011 04:49 AM

I've seen quite a few woolies for the past several weeks but I'll have to go look at their dark/light patterns. Last winter, I spent over half an hour trying to find the mailbox on its post after one storm.

bearisgray 10-04-2011 04:52 AM

Our DS said he bought a snowblower for this winter.

brushandthimble 10-04-2011 05:05 AM

I don't like the heat and humidity, and before I know it I will be complaining about the cold and snow LOL
I love fall, like spring when we have one, which does not seem to be often here anymore.

If it is real cold, I want a snow cover so my plants don't die of the cold.
