Do I really want the results of this test out there with some group who has no medical reason for having it? If a person wants to know their heritage, do a genealogy search. Thankfully my family kept enough records that I have a good record of that. A word of caution to those who use Ancestry--it is my belief that anyone can go into the "facts" there and alter them according to their own wishes. In our family that record was altered that it is incorrect according to those of us who have actually done the research. Ancestry may give you a hint as to possibilities but do use that only to prove what they claim.

Some of us do not have access to a family tree.

Others of us have not been told the truth of our parentage.

I am also skeptical about these tests. Especially the "just for fun" ones.

The potential for profit from your DNA is enormous. Research how many groundbreaking vaccines, treatments etc. have resulted from the HeLa immortal cells that were harvested from a patient that later died from cancer. These cells were traded all over the world for research.

Have you tried to trace your family tree? There's a wealth of information in genealogical libraries throughout the country. I've done some work on my mother's side of the family. It's very interesting and I'm so glad I did it I need to do more work on my dad's side. You also pick up a lot of interesting history along the way.

Very interesting, had thought about doing one of these tests but may have to think more about it. Makes me wonder is they could do a clone of me to do the housework, then I could sew more! LOL

I guess it's a good thing that I have never had the $$ so spare. Both of my parents were genealogists so I pretty much know what my heritage is.

It seems Ancestry.com now OWNS your DNA!!! I don't know about any other company that does DNA testing like this. But I suggest you re-read the fine print.

My sister just did one of those--hope she read the fine print 1st. This is actually kind of scary.:(

Isn't Ancestry run by the Mormon Church?

Could insurance companies use this against you?

I'm not interested in doing this test but I agree with you that a lot of people don't have this information--especially if they have been adopted and have no background info. If my Dr's office provided this service I might reconsider. Just won't do it through some TV ad.
