About those DNA tests they have been advertising on TV and elsewhere some of have had done.
It seems Ancestry.com now OWNS your DNA!!! I don't know about any other company that does DNA testing like this. But I suggest you re-read the fine print.

I wonder why they'd want to "own it"

Although there are probably some conspiracy theorists who may be able to enlighten me!

They can use it to build their own databases or flesh out the ones they have. They might possibly sell it to research firms for their use. Lots o reasons they are NOT getting my DNA. Call it conspiracy theories if you want, but they probably have a lot of reasons and not all of them are going to be something that's good for you.

I actually just ordered the National Geographic DNA test for my husband as a Father's Day present. I had looked at the Ancestry one in addition to 23 and Me, and their privacy policies were an absolute no-go! I am one of those odd people who actually reads privacy policies and terms and conditions before purchase. In addition, Ancestry doesn't report on Neanderthal DNA. It doesn't fit their world view I guess. National Geographic is running a big sale right now so it is a good time.

I don't understand why I would want to know. I know my race and what my great grands life was like. What difference can it make to me or what would I do with the information? Nothing. I know because I took the test. My DD wanted to document the family so I did one to please her. I wasn't impressed with the results as it was very general and what I knew about my ancestors anyway. Protect my DNA? My kids have it my grands have it and it will go on from there.

We did Mr stitchnrippers because there were some questions about his father's bio dad and we got interesting results which made a lot of sense. We are not worried about who has the DNA. Seems like unless folks have lived off the grid they are already in more databases than they care to believe.

I figure that the govt. is behind this..no....go.
