I love to make yoyos....so addicting! So, what cool projects do you make with them. Am afraid to start a quilt, might take forever, lol!

irishrose 06-23-2011 06:59 AM

My granddaughter is trimming a purse. Two rows around the base of a drawstring bag.

BTW, pm me your address. I have a few purple squares for you. Judy

Nothing!!! I had made way over 100 yo yo's because I wanted to make a quilt like one I had seen..so got on the band wagon and made all these yo yo's. Ended up tossing them out because I realized I was going to have to make thousands of them and I wasn't going to do that many!!!
I do have a pattern for a vest made from the yoyo's and if your interested in it, you may have it just pm me. :)

ckcowl 06-23-2011 07:09 AM

i'm appliqueing mine to fabric strips- in different (layouts) the (plan) is to then cut the strips up, frame them with black- stitch together into a quilt---so far i am loving it! and the stitching them down part? when i mentioned to hubby my intent-he said what you said- would probably take forever-it's not so bad- they actually go together quite quickly (i'm stitching around each one with an invisible stitch.

i've seen them attached with just a button in the middle too-
and the little dolls/animals/clowns made out of them are very very cute.

ckcowl 06-23-2011 07:11 AM

YOU THREW THEM OUT???OH MY GOODNESS- THAT'S THE SADDEST THING I'VE EVER READ ON THE BOARD!
so many people would oh so appreciate things like that...
so sad

While in Lancaster, PA last year we visit a small amish shop. The elderly lady had displayed a yo-yo quilt for a queen size bed. They are diligent workers and she said it took her 6 months to make the top. As we talked she was hand sewing another top(not YO-YO) Those ladies are amazing.

I however don't do yo-yo's unless it calls for one or two.

kwhite 06-23-2011 10:51 AM

I love the little yoyo dolls and animals.

julia58 06-23-2011 11:17 AM

I have a idea. Use them for a edge treatment for kitchen valences. Could also make tie backs for the curtains. There are so many uses for these addicting little flowers.

hobbykat1955 06-23-2011 12:06 PM

I do allot of applique and I use them as flowers when I do a flower pot theme...I also use them as centers for my Dresden Plates...I'd also love to do a quilt but....will never make that many in my lifetime

lovely...and allot of work and patience. Did you machine sew or hand sew each on there?

jitkaau 06-24-2011 03:38 AM

I made some with a class full of boys - we discussed how to incorporate them into a quilt and they each made a block with their yoyos used to denote the back of a turtle.Another group made a stuffed sculpture/toy of a tortoise and used the yoyos again for the back.

I have a plan to make one someday, also.
Here is an interesting pattern for yo-yo's:

http://www.amybutlerdesign.com/pdfs/Bloom_Quilt.pdf

I also remember seeing one where it seemed as though no two yo-yo's were the same size, and it was breathtaking!

Just Me... 06-24-2011 04:45 AM

Tote bags, table runners.....and I use them a LOT to embellish! They make great flowers!

east side quilter 06-24-2011 04:55 AM

Yes i made one for my double bed, but it would fit a queen. made it in a year.

907 all hand sewn - took about 6 months, the pattern is a Nancy's booklet.

dreamgirl 06-24-2011 05:51 AM

I use them to make flowers on my quilt. Put a button in the middle and add stem and leaves. :P

auntobby 06-24-2011 07:15 AM

Ha-ha, Funny you should ask about yo-yo's.
I just finished making 120 for a "Fons & Porter quilt, I made.
It's an Irish Chain called " Essentially Irish-Elements"
The yo-yo's are appliqued in the center blocks with leaves.
I have the quilt finished, all hand quilted. Now to put on the yo-yo's. This will be my Summer project when it is too hot to work in the flower garden. I can be inside where it is cool.
We are expecting temps in the triple digits this next week.
(((HUGS)))

My cousin made a lovely vest out of yo-yos. She said it took a long time (and she's a petite lady) but it was worth the effort.

lawsonmugs 06-24-2011 09:43 AM

They are so pretty sewn together.Make a smaller project if you don't want to make a million of them.lol. Make a table runner it could be tappered to a point on the ends or a round one or octagon whatever shape. also I seen some really cute vests and tote bags.pillows are cute too. Good luck please post whatever you end up making. MARY

lawsonmugs 06-24-2011 09:45 AM

If you put a metal bottle cap inside the yoyo before drawing it closed you can then sew these together to make a really durable and cute hot pad. I just remembered making a bunch of these. Mary

joann11 06-24-2011 01:51 PM

They are lovely. Thanks for sharing. joann11

kateyb 06-24-2011 02:02 PM

I'm making basket blocks for my mom and the yo-yo's will be the flowers in the baskets.

cr12cats 06-24-2011 02:07 PM

they are great for flowers on quilts just use one for the flower with a button for the center -- and they make great pillows for bed decor or sofa--flowers on clothing or totes or purses. headbands just sew the length you want encase some elestic and join to each end of yoyo strip can also put buttons on the middle of each yoyo. can put some on hats too.make cute pins for on a tee shirt to dress it up. great to make pnicushions, xmas tree ornaments, well there is a few ideas and the others ones already listed but the list can go on and on.

cr12cats 06-24-2011 02:14 PM

I love the turtle idea. DIL loves turtle and that has stirred up a lot of ideas for her. Thanks

Katts 14 06-24-2011 03:13 PM

This is the inspiration for my newest too! Lap size and yo-yo's on every other row. Mine should be done this weekend.

DorisPa 06-24-2011 05:42 PM

You can make so many different things with yoyo's. They make pretty flowers with a button in the middle, a table runner or plate mats, Put them on blouses, vest or make a wall hanging, You can google Yoyo's and you will find ideas. DO NOT TROW THEM AWAY.

emsgranny 06-24-2011 11:35 PM

I have over 500 yoyos I purchased at a sale - would be happy to sell themm for what I paid for them Just pm me thanks cheryl (I just dont think I would have the time nor the patience to do anything with them) cheryl

Latrinka 06-25-2011 05:48 AM

I've got tons of yo-yo's made, different sizes. It's a great travel project, DH was recently in hosp for 4 wks, starts chemo next week, so I made lots of them! I've seen them on quilts, pillows, blouses, handbags, and I've made table runners/toppers with them.

lynnie 06-25-2011 08:08 AM

about 30 yrs ago, on my 2 week vacation, i made a slew of them and made a queen sized quilt. also, coasters, hot pads, magnets, toys, whne i was 7 and probbly had some sort of brain damage,(lol) i traced around a wooden spool and made a bunch of them to make a clown ( like the big ones you see), he was about 4" tall when done. i wish i had him now, would make a cute pin or ornament. i make ornaments out of them, use them for centers and add alot of dimensin to thigs. I made turtlerouge a turtle picusion out of them also
