... the street sweepers come out!

Seriously.

!!

I'd never even seen one of those street-sweeping machines until we set up shop in the village. And every spring, they come along, cleaning up all the dirt and gravel that accumulates over the winter.

Stupid question, but... are these common? Or am I one of a privileged few, to be in a village with "clean shoulders"?

Do they have street sweepers in your area?

reneebobby 03-26-2010 06:51 AM

oh they use them all the time in Cleveland.

QuiltingGrannie 03-26-2010 06:52 AM

We have them here in town and in the nearby larger town. They do the city streets and keep the dust and dirt away from the sidewalks and drainage areas.

sharon b 03-26-2010 06:54 AM

We have tnem here also, but they don't come by often  And they leave more dirt and dust on the sidewalks after they pass  LOL

sally's girl 03-26-2010 06:57 AM

we have them in mansfield, also a private co. does our parking lot at wal-mart where I work

MNQuilter 03-26-2010 06:57 AM

We have them here in the metro area too. They are mainly to pick up all the sand that the county lays on the ice int he winter. But boy is it slippery to try to go anywhere on that sand until they get it swept up!

DebraK 03-26-2010 06:59 AM

They hit our street once a month.

Marjpf 03-26-2010 08:33 AM

We have them all over the Los Angeles area. They sweep once a week. Some areas have restricted parking on the day they come. It does make a huge difference around here in how clean the streets are.

chris_quilts 03-26-2010 09:35 AM

We have them here and I used to think they were a huge waste of money. However, walking 3 dogs during mud/sand season, I can now appreciate their efforts but wish that they hit my neighborhood much more frequently.

amma 03-26-2010 11:14 AM

Ours get sweeped once a week :D:D:D
When I visit Louisville,Ky they sweep downtown every early morning...that has to be the cleanest city I have ever visited LOL

skpkatydid 03-26-2010 11:19 AM

They are a common here....the third wednesday of the month after 7am ...from April till early November.

Jim's Gem 03-26-2010 11:35 AM

They come down our street every other Tuesday. I think all the residential streets in town get swept that often. This is year round. Business area's may get more.

craftybear 03-26-2010 01:30 PM

Yes, they have street sweepers in the town. Also the other day was a highway sweeper on our main highway.

quiltykitty 03-26-2010 02:52 PM

Oh yes we have street sweepers. All throughout the year.

raptureready 03-26-2010 05:16 PM

I know it's spring when the neighbors start leaving their doors open and playing "gansta rap" at inhuman noise levels. One rental house in the whole neighborhood and it's rented to some very strange people with some very strange hours.

chris_quilts 03-26-2010 06:24 PM

When you start pulling dandelions out of your flower beds!!!!

littlehud 03-26-2010 07:30 PM

We have them here. It is a sign of spring when they come. I don't know how well ours clean but they make a lot of noise.

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 03-26-2010 10:19 PM

Our streets all get swept once a week. At least they always have. That's one of the things the city is thinking of cutting out due to funding problems from the state of IL.

Funding problems??? I thought it was governor problems! We spend a lot of money prosecuting polititians, but I'm sure we don't get all the ones that deserve it.

You know it is spring when (remember Golden Girls - Rose's definition of Gerkonernochen ("a Swedish word - in Rose's vocab) - the moment dog poop turns white) you see Gerkonernochen all over the back yard!!!!! Edie

Loved that show---still watch the reruns, still laugh over the same jokes.

damaquilts 03-27-2010 05:44 AM

We have them but only once a year just before Old Campbell County Days. I think I have seen them maybe once during other times of the year. LOL Gotta look pretty for people coming around for that.

fabric-holic 03-27-2010 05:52 AM

I know it's spring when 2 of my grandsons get their summer "scalpings" from my SIL. I hate it but my daughter and her husband think its a riot. I'll try to post a pic of them last July 4th. (but aint' they handsome anyway??...lol)

Very handsome, very patriotic young men. I, too, think it's a riot. They're adorable. Probably not something I would have done to my son or grandsons but it is cute.

Nanjun 03-27-2010 08:22 AM

Yes in town but never in our subdivision

ktbb 03-27-2010 08:47 AM

we have them in Anchorage and it's a mark that spring/summer is truly here when we see the street sweepers out cleaning up all the left-over crumbs from the winter. I've often thought of painting them cheery spring colors rather than the dreary, dirty yellow they are now.

dixiechunk 03-27-2010 10:44 AM

Yes, my little burg of 5000 does have a street sweeper. Seems to me in these economic times that would be a service to consider dropping...at least until the recession lifts...yeah, right.

On the lighter side...as a child I lived in Batavia, NY. If my geography recall is correct, that's in your neck of the woods. Yes? No?

yourstrulyquilts 03-27-2010 11:24 AM

we have the sweepers, but due to budget cuts, they don't sweep as often as they used to. In Spring they sweep all the gravel and sand that was used on the ice during the winter and recycle it.

We, too, have street sweepers. They do the village every week. This is a very nice place to live, snow and all.

Maride 03-27-2010 03:09 PM

Is funny, because in NYC they clean the street every other day, but in Plattsburgh is once a year. I am not sure why bother.

Catherine Marie 03-27-2010 05:18 PM

We have them in Ontario. We get so much grit, salt, and sand over our winters. It builds up on the roads, sidewalks, and on your grass if the snowplough decides to dump it on your front boulevard. So, when you see a street sweeper in the neighbourhood, you want your car and your neighbour's car to be up in the driveways so that the sweeper can make a nice clean sweep in front of your house.

GMA 03-27-2010 07:42 PM

it's spring here when the city trucks take the plows off

nursie76 03-27-2010 07:46 PM

It's spring in Pennsylvania when the bright orange road cones, barrels and "road construction" signs appear and travel times double!

roseOfsharon 03-27-2010 08:22 PM

I know it's Spring when.... the birds start to congregate at my bedroom window and chirp in the early AM! And the first fly decends upon the screen! The air is fresh and the windows can be open.. well on good days! I love Spring!

Deb G 03-28-2010 07:33 AM

We have them here as well.

Batavia is about 45 minutes from Buffalo. It's still a very nice town!

butterflywing 03-28-2010 12:57 PM

we have those machines here in metuchen and growing up we had them in brooklyn, new york. that's why there's opposite sides of the street parking in new york city boroughs.

EDIT TO ADD: oooh, ooooh! when i was little, we had street sweepers that sprayed out water as they went so that they actually washed the streets. everything got washed down the storm sewers. we floated little bits of paper, called 'boats' on the little 'rivers' up against the curbs. who knew? we had never seen a boat or a river during the war.

Marge L. 03-28-2010 02:44 PM

Ours are done about every 2 weeks. They are also washed as they sweep.

butterflywing 03-28-2010 02:46 PM

i wish they'd come to my kitchen.

yourstrulyquilts 03-28-2010 03:28 PM

Naw, those little boats stick to everything!
