A question for our English - a BBC Show

I have a question for those of you who live in England about the show Skins. My husband has started watching this show and loves it. He was describing it to me, I asked him what the title means or how it relates to the show. He didn't know. Is the name Skins a slang word for something? Like in the US it might mean a football - since footballs are made from pig skin. Just curious.

No I'm not a druggie....but I have friends who live in London and I seem to remember them mentioning it.
