Wonderful photos! Brings back memories of many trips to the York area in the early 1990's. What I loved was the distinction between driving on the M ways (Interstate highways, here in the States) to driving in the small towns.
I was staying in the village of Goathland (sp?) which I believe is in one of your park systems. What I remember most are the sheep everywhere! Sheep on the common areas. Sheep on top of walls. Sheep on top of cars, picnic tables, in the phone booths, ...!! :-)
Also remembering my close encounter with a sheep one VERY foggy night. I'd just dropped off a friend and was returning to my hotel along one of those barely two lane village roads. I'd been warned to watch for sheep darting into the road, and I was just creeping along anyways because of the fog.
My face was practically glued to the windshield, trying to see the road (fog + pitch black, middle of nowhere), when off to my right darts this great big fat sheep!! I slammed on the brakes, heard a thud, my heart dropping down to the floor. OH NO, I've killed the poor thing. (Mind you, I'm an animal lover, to the max.) Before I could get out of the car, up pops the sheep as if it had spring loaded legs. OH THANK YOU GOD, THANK YOU!! It's still alive!!!
But, is it okay?? I hop out, flashlight in hand, and start trying to follow the sheep to see if it's okay. (If I had to, I would have put the poor creature in the back seat and driven to the nearest vet or farm!) In the meantime, the sheep is bouncing along through the heather, hurrying to join up with his friends. Of course, I never caught up with it.
My conclusion was that the sheep hadn't been shorn so it had quite a thick coat. I was, at the most, going five miles an hour (you could have walked faster) and the poor thing must have ended up just under the bumper. So, here I am, standing in the middle of a road, fogged in (like you wouldn't believe! unless you're English :-) ), amidst fields that go on forever into the blackest night I'd ever seen. Thankfully, the sheep (as far as I could tell) was okay and I managed to get back to the hotel without further mishap. What an adventure! I'd go back in a second!!
