I have lived in Austin since 1978, and it has grown considerably. Me myself, I wouldn't live in North Austin (been there, done that) or it's outlying areas if you paid me, but I know alot of people do. Not to offend anyone. I have lived South most of the time, and the people are way friendlier. You also find the most beautiful hill country south of Austin, Buda, Kyle, Wimberley and the areas in between these quaint little towns. Austin is very eclectic and that is what's so great about it, but I myself love living out of the city, in the country too. Best of luck in your job search.

When we moved here, Cedar Park was considered living out in "the sticks" (or boondocks to some) and now we have an elementary school, a middle school, a high school AND a stadium right in our back yard. (You'd flip your lid if you knew what my property taxes are) I don't mind it, but for folks coming here and wanting "country living" could be in for a real shocker a couple of years later, because it won't be the country anymore. I hope this info helps. I am not trying to deter you in any way because again, I just love it here.

My sister lives in Blanchard OK which is 30 minutes south of Oklahoma City. She loves it there! They are in the country and still close enough to town if she needs to go. Would be happy to give you more info... FYI, I've been to Wyoming many times and didnt care for it at all. There wasn't much to do and took forever to get anywhere.

There are lots of communities around the Dallas/Ft Worth area where you would be able to commute. My DH commuted from Hillsboro to Irving (between the two) for a number of years. Hillsboro is a bit farther than you mentioned, but there are lots of closer places, all of which have rural areas around them. I would suggest checking out some of the communities surrounding the Waxahachie area. They are far enough away to not be city yet close enuf to drive easily. Also the metroplex seems to be growing more north than south as far as the main high $ growth is concerned. If you have more questions feel free to pm me

Also if you are interested in the Houston area, there are quite a few horse properties in the Magnolia area. Whether any are for sale I don't know. Your commute time to Houston would depend on what part of town you found a job. Lots of schools and colleges all around.

I'm in San Antonio and there are several small towns within 45 minutes of SA. Just depends on where your job will be. Pleasanton, Jourdanton, LaCoste, LaVernia are to the south and east. Boerne and New Braunfels area are to the north. There is a forum for people looking to relocate to SA (and other cities, too). http://www.city-data.com/forum/san-antonio/

The oil boom is big down here and property values have jumped in some areas. And Texas doesn't have state income tax but uses a property tax based on value.
