One year my youngest daughter was given a lump of coal by her mean spirited aunt Pat. That poor kid cried for hours. Her other Christmas presents were put aside as she cried about the coal. I finally went to my bedroom and wrote a note that I stuck in my husband's stocking which was supposedly written by Santa and said that he had put the lump of coal in the wrong stocking and since he was in a hurry he could not get it out before he had to leave. In it he stated that the coal was supposed to go to Pat (the one who put it in her stocking) and that she was to get it from my daughter and be better next year or there would be a rock in there next time and NO presents. My husband read this to the group and we laughed out loud. My daughter stopped crying for the coal, and then went and comforted her aunt Pat (but quickly gave her the coal!). Sometimes this coal stuff can backfire.

One year I gave my DGD a bag of coal candy as pictured above because coal was actually on her Christmas list. She gets a bag of real coal every year now because I skipped one year and she was very disappointed and asked why Santa did not leave her bag of coal. She always gives a big smile when she opens it.
