Citronella spray. I use this as it doesn't harm the cat, but keeps it away.

I agree that cats are someones pets, but if they really care for their pet they should keep it home.
We have a neighbors cat that has decided that our walkway is a nice place to go potty.

    Hazelnut shells...
They are not bad for the enviroment and won't harm kids if they happen to pick them up and put them in their mouths. They sell them here in bags like bark for flower beds too.

Hubby says a 12 gauge works too.... (He was just being funny) ;)

I have a fire department regulation size extinguisher filled with water that has a range of about 50 feet. I sneak up and give them a shot. It stings good but does not cause any lasting harm, since they are someones pet and I could not bring myself to hurt one. The best part? They all seem to remember the nasty woman in the green house with the water!! They tend to go away for a long time. It is humane and they get the point.

I've had the same problem. Last summer I was using Preen, the week pre-emergent. They don't like it and stay out of the beds. Takes care of the weeds also.

I have cats and dogs...when I put seedlings in I stick twigs or sate sticks around about. I then remove them when the plants are bigger. You could also use those decorative garden sticks with the butterflies or whatever on top if you think the sticks are unsightly.

Walmart has lavender smelling moth balls. Cost a little more, but worth not having that strong odor!

Moth balls and red pepper should help. Red pepper helped keep neighbor hood cats from using my front yard. Good luck!

Provide a litter box. They prefer them.

Plant something stinky. Scented geraniums work here.

Buy a spray specifically for this purpose.

Lay a fine garden mesh around the plant.

There are prong mats made just for this purpose. They don't cause injuries. They just make digging impossible.

    Motion activated sprinklers.
