Default Who knew?

Fill a plastic bottle with hot hummingbird nectar and see what happens!! Wondered why it kept flowing over the bottle top until I put an empty one beside it!

That is so weird!! I use coke bottles for hummingbird food too (our feeder is made for them) but I don't think I've ever put it in hot. I use less hot water and then when the sugar is all dissolved I add cold to make it ready to serve temp.

Does it do the same thing with just plain hot water?

We make our own "joy juice" for the hummers, but was told to boil the water to make sure there isn't any bacteria transferred. Then one day my DH forgot and put the hot juice in the container and it melted the container. Had to buy a new one. Did not know a coke bottle would fit the bottom part.

The coke bottles are only for storage. I have small tube feeders so I can carry a bottle of nectar in my pocket while I cruise the "back 40". The other small coke bottles stay unopened and therefore fresher in the fridge until I need them. Had fun thinking up names for my "flock" this year - HumDinger, Humbug, HumVee, Ho-hum, HumDrum (she's kind of colorless). So fun!

We use a feeder like this one and I just use cleaned out water bottles. I don't boil all of the water but I do use bottled water when I make it. Birds eat bugs and drink out of puddles and dirty birdbaths. I can't imagine that non boiled bottled water would hurt them.
