Thread: Word of advice-chemical burns

    Never ever do what I did and use industrial grade bleach without gloves. I was working in moments of not feeling well and this was the result :-( Pictures actually look better than my hands do-I wish they looked this healed!

    Did it also cause any problems with your breathing? It does mine!

    As a chemist, I can sympathize with the problem and pain. I've had many types of burns. Always wash/flush the area with water after the contact for 15 minutes. I know this seems like a long time, but many chemicals are still reacting even in dilute quantity (Especially important if you get it in the eyes. People forget to protect their eyes with safety goggles.) With bleach on hands use a mild soap. I use this stuff we find in the vet supply called Udder Balm. It contains lanolin (warning to anyone allergic) and will help replace the oil stripped from the skin by the bleach.

    I had a friend that did that exact same thing and she burned her hands, too. She was moving into a new home and was cleaning the bathroom tub.
