Greeting, fellow quilters
I just wanted to let you know that I truly appreciate this site and am thankful that I can join. I accidentally stumbled across it while researching vintage machines. I was just amazed that there was a community of sewers and quilters as fascinated with vintage machines as I was. I have learned so much!
Unfortunately, I am a wee bit technologically challenged, so it has taken me some time to figure out how to navigate. I have just been stumbling around. However, you guys are so patient and have even given me tips on how to post pictures. I can not thank you enough.
i have grown up loving quilts. My grandmother, who lived to 108 and 1/2, taught me so much about quilting. I grew up hearing about the individuals who had made her the stack of wedding quilts she received. She taught me the names of quilt blocks, the history of the individual block patterns, and the people who had made them. She told me how her mother, who had made her the wool log cabin quilt, was born in a soddie on the prairie and how her mother’s family treated their log cabin, as well. She explained the significance of the little red square, being the fire, in the middle of each log cabin. There were two Victorian era quilts, the churn dash, drunkards path, Grandmother’s flower garden, and so many more. They carried the stories of the depression, the great wars, and my family history.
Needless to say, I fell in love with quilting. I loved the old machines!
Unfortunately, I have not had nearly the time to pursue this as I wish! Life and family obligations are real things. But I am finally getting to a place where my little machine is starting to purr a great deal more.
i live in Western Canada, but lived with my Grandmother in the mid-west when I was younger. While I adore the mountains and the beautiful countryside that I currently live in, I miss the oaks, maples, and rolling hills around her house. Quilting puts me back there! Needles to say, I love the country.
I was delighted to stumble across this site which is uplifting and encouraging. I have already leaned so much more from you guys.

Howdy from Texas! It sounds like you are on way ahead of most quilters when they decide to start quilting. The history that you have with your grandmother is priceless & sounds like she passed her love of quilts on to you. What a special, loving relationship you two must have had. I can't wait to see your first quilt. This board is filled with people who love quilts & quilting & are willing to share their knowledge & tips with you. Enjoy your quilting journey!

Welcome to the QB from SE Michigan. The story you have shared is a similar story for many of us who learned at the foot of another. What a great joy. Your love of this art is impressive and an inspiration to all of us. I look forward to sharing a lot of fun quilt stories and techniques new and old here on the board. Hopefully your new found time to be able to sew will add new memories to pass down to new generations. Again welcome to the QB~

Thanks, Juliasb! You are from my home state! How I miss that it! Yes, so many of us learned from someone older and wiser! Although I am certain that there are many amazing younger teachers, these days. It is wonderful that there is such a generous community willing to share techniques. Speaking of learning from others, I suspect that you are the Julia from the group that is working on borders around a center square. I must say that I am amazed with the work of that group. I had never thought that seriously about borders. I was so naive! The borders are setting off the center block so well! If I have mistaken you for some other Julia, forgive me. Either way, I am sure we will be able to exchange stories and techniques. Take care and thanks for the welcome!
