Default Hello from SoCal!

Hello! I am a beginning quilter but I am not a newbie to sewing. I learned to sew when I was about 6 years old, and then went to FIDM to study fashion design. I then designed Halloween costumes for about 10 years. I am now moving away from the fashion industry but am working on launching a pattern business. I just started quilted but find it a fun way to create something that people will love. I hope to share with you my favorite creations!

Hi Jennie, and welcome from Southern California. I have a similar background to yours. I started to quilt in the 90s because quilting was an important influence in wearable art then. The major difference I found is that precision is more important in quilting. Fit is the problem with garments, and one of the main reasons people give up. When you're designing and drafting your patterns, that's a major thought to keep in mind.

I never thought I'd prefer quilting, but with my art quilts I find more freedom in design, and more excitement discovering new techniques (using paint on fabric!). You'll find lots of help, inspiration and kindness here.

I agree! There seems to be more freedom in creating and design in quilting from what I have seen so far. I'm ready to leave garment construction behind (except for special projects like costumes for my nephews). I can create a sewn creation without easing an armhole or trying to finagle facings? Yes please!

Welcome from the Heartland of Florida. I also started sewing when I was 5 years old. My mom had a treadle machine and I would stand up to sew and work the treadle. I took sewing classes and later I belonged to the American Sewing Guild where I was a chapter leader. I loved making clothes for my entire family but now all of the family is scattered and I don't like to sew unless I can do a fitting on someone. I made my first quilt in 1980 and it was labor intensive. Now I enjoy my rotary cutter, cutting mat and all of the rulers available. I mainly make quilts now with an occasional garment. I know you will love this board. I have learned so much from the members and they are all so nice and helpful.

Welcome! We use to live in Huntington Beach. I never met another quilter while I was there though.
