Welcome from W TX! I like the old Singers (before 1960) I found a 1958 Singer 401A!! Paid $23.00 at an Estate Sale. It has plenty of 'bells & whistles!' They seem to be on e-bay between $100 & $400. Check the Garage Sales & Estate Sales. It took me 9 months to find this one.

I use a 1940 or 1941 Singer, the old black cast iron kind. I love it since I spend my time sewing and not messing with my machine....and I have four other much newer machines. All are too fussy to just sit and sew for hours on! And welcome from Atlanta!

Hi from central Wis. I have a 1953 Singer which I ABSOLUTELY love, a New Home, A Brother and the newest that I don't even yet know how to use, a Husqvqarna Topaz, it's a sewing and embroidery machine. Hope I like it, once I know how to use it.

    Hi, Jmm3,

For years I sewed and quilted with my Singer. Last year I traded it in for a Janome. Loved my Singer, but love my Janome more.

Figure out which features you want. Here are my favorites:
    1. Lots of feet
    2. Lots of different stitches
    3. Up / down permanent needle position
    4. Thread cutter on the machine (this makes SUCH a difference)
    5. The larger the machine bed, the better for quilting.
    6. Portability; so you can take your machine to classes.

    Welcome to the board! LoriAnn

Welcome from Stevens Point, Wisconsin. I would try to get the very best that you can afford. You won't be sorry you did. A cheap one will not last, well, at least mine didn't many years ago. I have a Janome and love it. There are many different priced ones.
