Hi and welcome from Alaska. The rule is if you really like something, buy more than you normally would--at least 3 yds.

I do have one questions. I've seen lots of peoples quilting rooms with all of the fabrics you have collected. I know our Wal-Mart is downsizing and marking down alot of their fabrics right now and I would love to be able to pick up some at the discounted prices. My question is: How much fabric should I get if I don't have a certain project in mind for it? 1 yard, 2???? What would be a standard amount to have on hand? I don't even know if this is a question that has an answer..

Thank you and I hope to make lots of new friends and learn alot on this group.
Welcome from Washington State!
I buy as much as I can afford. That said,

If it's white, off white or cream - the whole bolt.
If it's a good blender (will go with lots of things) 3 yards
If it's a totally awesome fabric (in my own opinion)but with no plans for a specific quilt - 2 yards
If it's really nice fabric - 1 yard
To add variety - 1/2 yard of lots of different colors in small printes or batiks.
If it's fat quarters or a quarter yard, as many as I can get.

Hi Gaila, welcome from Big Sandy, TX and buy as much as you can. it can be very disappointing when you find you don't have enough to finish your project. you can always use what is left over. Maria
