Welcome from Lexington,KY Sorry about the back surgery, I am facing that in the not to distant future, scary thought! Start with a simple 9 patch, they can be big or little, go together fast,, and you get the experience of getting the seams right. I too had the apparel experience first, and I believe that made things easier.

Welcome from Montana. My son goes to BSU so I try to drive out to Boise a couple of times a year. Love it there! I would try Rail Fence for a first quilt. But don't do any bigger than a twin - it's too easy to get overwhelmed on your first project!

Welcome to the board!!! From my experience making quilts is easier (and more fun to be sure) than making clothes.
Hope you are healing well- my husband had major back surgery several years ago and is doing GREAT!!!

Welcome From Central California :)
Agree w/ 4 or 9 patch, rail fence also a winner, just try... but remember to keep the seams consistant on each block, or when you get ready to put the blocks together they get out of alignment, (yep, I learnt this from doing)
Have fun !!!

Wow Thank You all so much. I have a wall hanging of deer for a male friend to do. I really like TIPPY's D9B looks fun and easy. I might use that for around his deer panel. Thank you all the suggestions!

Just start with making one block...do another...and another...pretty soon you'll have a quilt! Welcome from SW Washington

Welcome to the board from Southern California!!
Do you have a shop near you that you can take a class at? Do you have friends that quilt that you can get together with? I love that I have several "quilting" friends that I get together with monthly to sew and occasionall to shop with or if I ever need a fabric choice selection.
