Default Machine throats

Hi. I am new to machine quilting. When I research machines, very few sites give the throat deminisions. How important is the throat size when using free motion?

i usually try Amazon... they give detailed info and great reviews. I also look at the manufacturers website... they usually give the specs somewhere. I know... sometimes it takes a lot of digging

Welcome from Ontario, Canada. The bigger the throat the better.

Welcome from California. If you plan on making quilts larger than baby or lap, the larger throat size will be extremely helpful. So, I agree with zozee and tartan, the bigger the better!!

If you plan to quilt twin size or larger,a big throat helps a lot. If you look on the descriptions of the machine, that will likely tell you what you need to know.

When I first doing FMQ, I did it on a machine with a 7 or 9 inch throat, and I did several king size quilts. Then I got a machine with a 11 inch throat. What a difference. Now I'm thinking maybe a sit down quilting machine. Get the largest one you can afford. It will make the quilting much more fun.
