Hi. I am new to machine quilting. When I research machines, very few sites give the throat deminisions. How important is the throat size when using free motion?

i usually try Amazon... they give detailed info and great reviews. I also look at the manufacturers website... they usually give the specs somewhere. I know... sometimes it takes a lot of digging

Welcome from California. If you plan on making quilts larger than baby or lap, the larger throat size will be extremely helpful. So, I agree with zozee and tartan, the bigger the better!!

If you plan to quilt twin size or larger,a big throat helps a lot. If you look on the descriptions of the machine,that will likely tell you what you need to know.

When I first doing FMQ, I did it on a machine with a 7 or 9 inch throat, and I did several king size quilts. Then I got a machine with a 11 inch throat. What a difference. Now I'm thinking maybe a sit down quilting machine. Get the largest one you can afford. It will make the quilting much more fun.
