I remember my WVA hillbilly Grandma sitting in her rocking
chair, pulled up close to the kerosene lamp, bent so that she
could get its light as well as light from the fire place.

That picture comes back to me as I bend over my late model
sewing machine with it's strong light, and a strong light from
the ceiling bulb...Thanks, Grandma, for teaching me the basics
of sewing and quilting, even though it was done with feed sacks
and Grandpa's old clothing!

My Gram and two of the grand aunts loved making quilts but mostly because the families needed them. Big families back in those days. Food stamps and food banks were unheard of back then. Waste not. Our grands would be shocked at what is wasted today. My favorite memory too is Gram with one of the aunties going over quilt blocks and or cutting templates out of paper for the blocks.

Smiling* Hello and welcome Debbie, I wish I had had a mom or grandmother that quilted and could have had the opportunity to learn from. I am new to the forum or should say, just starting to participate here on the board! Everyone here is most helpful. I just love having found the site!

I'm loving this board also. I just got my laptop and high-speed connection, I am amazed at the information at my fingertips. And it comes from people like me - just regular folks sharing what they have learned from their successes and mistakes. Well, I haven't shared much yet (a bit on the shy side), but my time will come.
