Welcome from central valley of California.
Best thing is to take a beginning class at a local fabric or quilting store. Small initial $$, and you can decide if its really for you or not.

Welcome from another Aussie. I went to my LQS and took a class. I did do a full sized single quilt but it was all done by hand and I learnt alot. Maybe your LQS might have different classes available or you could find out if there is a quilting group where you live. I'm sure you would be welcomed....Welcome to the board, it is a wealth of information.
