Welcome from central Louisiana. You just have to jump into this quilting game. I was always afraid to cut into fabric. Finally got some nerve and got started.
Good luck

Hello Caer Urfa,
Where are you in Queensland?, my daughter is in Brisbane and I have friends in Rockhampton and Gracemere. Hubby and I were over in 2008 and travelled around a bit, the bits we saw really are beautiful!

Calling all ladies in the UK (or travellers from anywhere else!)-
Are any of you heading off to the Festival of Quilts in August? I've been wanting to go for years and am going to try my very hardest to make this time.
Sue (rummage)

O Sue now you are tempting me!! I have been to the Festival of Quilts every year since it started (8 or 9 I can't remember which) I have always stayed in the local hotel - great rates for the event and spent two days of heaven. The classes are good, the quilts spectacular and the fabric temptation overwhelming. I decided to give it a miss this year for various reasons but if there were others going -well... It is just so busy that I dont know if I could cope with a one day visit.

Hello and Welcome from Utah, USA.
Fat 1/4 is = 1/4 yard and about 22 inches. At least here in the states. Not sure on the conversion.
A Fat 1/8 is half of a fat 1/4.

heya calder céad míle failte to you as well. Im not to far ahead of you, ive never made a quilt! Ive the books, materials & patterns but im afraid of making an absolute mess of it! at least with knitting you can just rip your mistakes!! : ))

Well, a fat quarter is 1/2 of a yard of fabric, cut in half at the fold. Normally if you ask for 1/4 yard of fabric (1 yard=36 inches), you get a strip of fabric 9 inches by 44 inches. Here is an illustration.

And my dear, you will be ripping out a lot with quilting too, just like knitting!! It's harder to rip out sewn stitches than knitted stitches, but they rip out all the same! LOL So go ahead and start!

And welcome all y'all!

Thanks for adding that I was afraid my explanation would only be confusing. But could not figure how to make the conversion to metrics.
At least the picture will make it more clear.

Hi Muriel and a warm welcome from the UK. Can't wait till the Quilt festival at the NEC, I'm like a child waiting for Christmas morning. Am still fairly new to quilting myself and find that I learn something new nearly every day, especially on here.
