I am just beginning my new adventure in learning how to quilt. Have not purchased any books, patterns, etc. Just tried to glean info from here and quilters blogs. Anywho.......stayed up till midnight last night working on a place mat. Did ok till it was time to bind. Ended up tearing off the binding and going to bed very much ready to give up on quilting. I can make sushi for dh, but quilting isn't going so well for me! I have included pictures as proof! Think I just need more patience?

Hello and welcome from Ontario. Don't give up you have a great start there. Binding can give us all grief sometimes. There are some great utube videos to help you. Stick with it, it does get easier.

I'm not a sushi girl so I think your quilting looks much better. Binding is tough for me, too. There are several good tutorials on YouTube and 100's of experts on here.

Try again. Post pictures of your problems along with your questions and someone will get you going in the right direction.

Yummmm I love sushi.. welcome from Michigan

SueDor 01-28-2011 05:44 AM

You have a placemat there, now that your are fresh from sleeping I bet you can put the binding on. You didn't learn how to cook in one day, how do you expect to learn how to quilt in one day. You've done great so far, you can do it!

ssgramma 01-28-2011 05:53 AM

Yummy! Thanks for the sushi :-)

Your placemat looks great so you are doing fine. Binding isn't my fav either but it does get easier with practice.

Maybe some Youtube vids for help?

Hello, welcome and happy quilting from Germany!

heartbuilt 01-28-2011 07:39 AM

hey, thanks y'all!!! I did take another stab at it this am, after reviewing your very thoughtful suggestions, and viewing some tutorials. the binding on this first placemat is a pitiful sight! however, first binding project accomplished and now on to the other three placemats and their binding. practice, practice, practice :)

mollymct 01-28-2011 08:24 AM

Hello! Welcome from MS! From another beginner, you'll find tons of great help herel I'm impressed that you tackled binding so quickly. I put it off forever, but it's not so scary now! Good luck with the placemats! Love the colors and quilting!

bjnicholson 01-28-2011 08:30 AM

I feel your pain and I'm glad you took another try at the binding. I just send 4 placemats to my sister, Christmas presents that were late because I was afraid of the binding. I finally just took the bull by the horns and bound those suckers! They turned out great. Sis (and her semi-snobbish husband) loved them. She called yesterday and said someone else really loved them too. Fat Katherine, her cat had taken them over!

Welcome to the board from Southern California!!!

MadQuilter 01-28-2011 07:10 PM

Hello from CA. Congrats on trying the mad quilty thing from the hip. Question: Did you square off your piece? Hard to say from the pic. If you square it, binding will probably be easier.

SueSew 01-28-2011 07:36 PM

Wow, your sushi looks great!
Hang in there with the binding and RELAX - I find when I am worrying about whether my work is any good is when I discover I've sewed the darn thing together inside out. I've even pinned things inside out and not noticed it. I think on my first and only quilt I spent a third quilting, and two-thirds ripping out the stuff I did wrong. Keep the faith! And this board is just the best place for a new quilter.Welcome from snowy MA

Neena 01-28-2011 07:46 PM

Keep practicing, but give yourself breaks so you don't become discouraged. And keep reading the Quilting Board. You'll get there.
