My name is Julia and I live in Waterford Michigan. I have been quilting now for about 20 years. I spend 90% of my day in my sewing studio. In here I am surrounded with my sewing machines, cutting boards and fabrics. I am the first to admit I am a fabric-aholic. My fabric stash will out live me without a doubt! I have to really try to stop myself from bring any more into house as there is nowhere else to put it! I usually make 2-3 quilts a year any more as I have gone over the years from quantity to quality. I do most of my quilting by hand now and the majority of piecing is done on one of my several sewing machines. I love reproduction fabrics especially from the depression era. I don't consider myself and expert quilter but maybe at an intermediate level. There are still some pattern designs that I have not been able to conquer. I also love to use my embroidery machine to do some quilt designs. I have found the embroidery machine especially helpful when making crazy quilts. I love scrapy quilts too. I can't bring myself to throw away any piece of fabric larger and 2" in any direction. I know I can find a use for it!
Other things about me that are important I am a retired Social Worker (Gerontologist). I have 2 grown children 3 grand children and the most wonderful man you could ask for at my side. My sister (sister #2 Deb) is also a quilter. So that is me. I hope to be as active here as I can. This site looks to be a very grand place to play. Juliasb (aka Julia)

I spent a good deal of last evening exploring different things and haven't hit on but a small fraction of things here. I am sure in time I will find my way around. I just put on a pic of one of my quilts as an avatar. It was a GMFG (Grandmother's Flower Garden) I gave it to my sister a few months ago. I know she will always cherish it. It was all hand made, every stitch! I will no doubt be making another one in the future. I love traditional quilt making. Right now I am working on a Depression block quilt. I made one and gave it to my nieces as a moving away gift and really want one for myself. I just hope I get to keep this one :-)

Oh I can tell this is going to be loads of fun! Now I will never get to quilt, I will be at the computer all day and well into the night.

Welcome from NJ. I read this forum when I can't sleep at night. I save the daytime for sewing, I too worked with Geri's at a state hospital and then with the younger pop. Retired after 32 years as I couldn't work any longer due to a disabling auto accident. I am new to quilting since Nov. 09. I also have 3 grands and a sister named Debbie, but she doesn't quilt!!! Loads of info here and wonderful gals and guys! Lace

juliasb 06-04-2010 06:52 AM

I spend a great deal of time on the computer already so a bit more won't even be noticed. The good thing however is that being around and communicating with other quilters keeps me focused to get things done. I am really tired of the many UFO's that I have here.

Quilter7x 06-04-2010 06:56 AM

Hi Julia, welcome to the QB. You've already discovered many places here and have a ton more to discover. The grandmother's flower garden quilt in your avatar is gorgeous. I can't believe you did it all by hand!

That quilt took me about 4 months to complete. I discovered that doing a quilt like that requires a lot of pre-planning and the ability to make changes in that plan quickly! I have also made a couple other GMFG quilts. One was a baby quilt for my grandson and another one was all in earth tones perfect for a man cave. I said I gave this one to my sister. I stand corrected. I gave her the one done in the earth tones. I kept this one for myself. To many quilts (never)!

juliasb 06-04-2010 09:11 AM

you see where I am now and I should be piecing a new quilt. I just made a wonderful trade. 2 years of piano lessons for a quilt. The teacher just left here with several books to start looking through. I'm glad she has to do the choosing on that one. I am the lucky one I get the joy of sewing and the piano lessons! I almost forgot. That means I won't be on the computer more after all

Are you getting any sewing done today?

juliasb 06-04-2010 02:13 PM

I was forced into early retirement from a disability way to soon  I have never let it stop me from being as productive as possible! Quilting has provided me that avenue. I have a lot to do on a quilt that I want to get finished or at least the top completed as I just bartered today piano lessons for a quilt. I don't know how long it will take her to decide on what she would like, so it just means I have to get moving on what I am doing. I suppose I will post a picture as soon as I get the quilt going. thanks for the warm welcome. Julia
