Hello! I'm new with a question regarding geese
 

Greetings! I just joined this forum. I've been quilting about 2 years.

When I make no-waste geese the seam points feel thicker than the seam points on geese make the traditional way (1 rectangle + 2 squares). Is this accurate? If so, does anyone have suggestion on how to reduce bulk on no-waste geese? Saves So much fabric.

I hadn't thought about the bulk when making flying geese this way. Great question! Am following to see what others have to say.

Hmmmm....no answers yet? I'm sure they will be forthcoming, although I'm not offering one! Welcome to the Quilting Board!

I don't understand how they would have more bulk. When they are finished, they look exactly like the ones you make with the two little squares. I can't tell the difference.

I pretty much always work in scraps and so have very few identical repeats and almost always make my Geese with the rectangle/two squares method. For small units, there is really very little waste and with bigger units you can make smaller HST for another project.

I've been doing the Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt this year and we had a lot of geese being made in a lot of different ways. I linked this thread over there to see if people can give them recent results, I know some of them tried multiple methods.

Edit: My solution to my style of cutting large and trimming down for Bonnie's project was to use her large triangle for the geese which she had us cut a specific way, and then I paired it with oversized triangles which could then be trimmed precisely. Still some waste but I'm willing to live with it to get accurate geese.

I'm no expert on FG, but could it be a pressing issue? In my limited experience I found if I press one seam towards the goose and one to the wing it isn't as bulky.

When making FG the no waste method, note that the small squares will overlap each other, and this is where the bulk comes from. I sometimes fold it all in half and trim the two corners off before sewing both sides of the central line.
