I just wanted to introduce myself and to pay my compliments to all of you extremely talented quilters!! I have been drooling over your gorgeous quilts and longing to have just a fraction of your skill! I'm not so creative, but I enjoy looking at the beautiful quilts of others. I am so often inspired by them. My quilts are simple ones that I make for various reasons -- mostly for school auctions and school staff members. The one I did for this year was done with the assistance of my 8th grade students. Maybe I will post a picture of it and explain the design. I recently finished a little quilt (Curious George) for my fiance's, (Don) youngest grandson. It was for his 3rd birthday. He loved it! I just finished machine quilting a simple lap quilt for Don's half-sister who lives in Indiana. I just have to put on the binding. Next I need to machine quilt a lap quilt for his sister-in-law who lives in the same house as the half-sister. Confused yet??!! I have a quilt top waiting to be marked so it can be quilted, too. It's for my brother's 50th birthday. The pattern is Storm at Sea. When I finish it, I will post a photo. It actually turned out quite well. He has a charter fishing company called Reel Scream that "sails" the Detroit River and Lake St. Clair. I really think he is going to love it.

Gee...sorry I got so long-winded!! Again, thanks to all the talented quilters! You keep me motivated and inspired! I also appreciate all the advice you have been giving on the posts! Quilters are such a giving group of people! I know I'm going to love getting to know all of you and will surely be learning so-o-o-o-o very much!!

Hi Patty,
We are definitely neighbors. I'm in northwest Detroit, Rosedale Park area. Are you familiar with any of the quilt guilds around? I'm part of one that meets in Livonia - GLAAQN. I'm possibly looking for another one to join.

I am familiar with the area. I'm at 6-mile and Beech Daly. Howdy neighbor!!! :D I don't know of any quilt guilds -- mostly because they scare me!! I think I would feel very intimidated and self-conscious about my work. I absolutely love to sew and especially quilt, but I'm certainly not great at it -- yet! Maybe someday I will be. I read many books, watch tutorials and quilting shows (love Fons and Porter!!!), and search the internet.

upchurs 06-04-2010 12:37 PM

Patty, you don't need to feel intimidated. I'm not very good. I am not a stickler for perfectly lined seams, and the like, on my quilts. I rather enjoy the little imperfections. Says "lovingly handmade" to me. Quilting is the craft of the moment for me. I switch back and forth between many.

If you are interested in going to a meeting with me, let me know. Our next meeting is the second Saturday in July. There are some fabulous quilters there. I don't happen to be one of them, and I'm just fine with that. The group is, however, very supportive. If you have a question, you will not have to look far for an answer. And lots of great ideas. We usually do a project at each meeting. I'm working on charity quilts for the VA and the Detroit Rescue Mission now. LMK. Hope you can join us some time.
Sylvia

Thanks Sylvia for the invite!! I just might take you up on it sometime. I'm not sure of my schedule yet for July. In about two weeks from now I will be traveling to southwestern Virginia to visit my mom, North Carolina (Durham) for an educational conference, back to Mom's house in Virginia then to East Tennessee to visit my dad and possibly Kentucky and southern Indiana. I have yet to decide if I will pay an extended visit to my aunt who lives in southeastern Kentucky. She has been wanting me to stay with her for at least one week so we can "talk our heads off" (you have to say that with a really strong southern drawl) and do some quilting together. She has fabric she wants to give me as well as some other goodies. I just hate to pass up this opportunity to visit with her since she is elderly, and one never knows what the future holds. I would feel just terrible if something happened to her, and I didn't stop by for a visit.

I'll let you know if and when I can join you. I would love to get involved in the charity quilts! I had a Service Projects class at my old school where my students constructed quilts for babies, the elderly, etc. The last year I had the class my three students constructed 200 quilts -- in one school year!!! They were able to touch so many lives, and I was so proud of them!

Hello Redford, Michigan,
I just joined this site and noticed that you are from Redford. I was born in Highland Park and my parents brought my twin and I home to Redford. I have not been back since I was 8 years old. We live in Southern California now.
This quilt site has so much on it it would probably take a day to see it all. I love it. I have only been quilting for about two years now and have learned a lot but have so much more to learn. Most of my learning has come from watching Quilters TV.
It would be great to hear from you.

Hello Karen65!

I thought you might like to know how I came to live in Redford.

The wonderful thing is that I had some dear friends who lived in Redford. I lost touch with them about 20+ years ago. I divorced my husband of 26 years back in 2005 then moved into an apartment. One year later I found a cute little house online on a realty site. The street name sounded familiar, but I wasn't sure why. The day before I was to view the house I drove down the street, and suddenly I knew why the name was so familiar!! It was the street my friends had lived on!! After all the time that had passed I really thought they must have moved, but they hadn't!!!! Now I live next door to my dear, sweet friends that I first met 31 years ago! Barb and I actually worked together at Minnesota Fabrics back in 1979 and became fast friends. I am so very blessed to live next door to them!

I actually did mine using foundation piecing. I made a Storm at Sea several years ago, and all of those bias edges drove me nuts!! This one was so-o-o-o-o much easier!!! :D

The one I made for my brother is a lap-size quilt. The top is finished. I'm in the process of marking it for quilting. If I get a chance, I'll post a pic of it this weekend. ;-)
