Greetings everyone,
My daughter's school was the sole school selected in the state to create a 5 X 5 inch patriotic square for a quilt of the US. She was asked to head up this project and it's due this week. From childhood, I've seen quilts being made by older ladies but I never actually took part in the making of one. So, as I surfed the web for information on quiltmaking, I stumbled upon this site and it has truly excited me. I'm paniked as well because I know we have our work cut out for us this week as we embark upon making that square without any resources. All comments and ideas are welcomed!

Prayerful Edith

Hello from Scotland!
That's quite a challenge, and a 5x5 block is pretty small for detail. Is the block supposed to represent your state? If so applique in the shape of your state bird or flower could be used, appliqued on top of a simple block (pin wheel or nine patch)both of which can be machined stitched. Or maybe a simple red stitch outline of the state bird or flower stitched on white could be given a patched border -(similar in design to the pics attached maybe?) I'll try and find some websites for you to look at if you like !?

Hi and welome from on the road, currently the warm, sunshiny tropical State of Michigan. If you are looking for a block pattern, try the website "quilterscache". They must have 1000 different blocks and you can probably get some inspiration there, Maybe something under stars or military, or whatever the kids choose for the theme. Post the picture when you get it done. We always like to see completed projects. God Bless.

Yes, the block is supposed to represent our State (SC) and know that we are definately considering your ideas along with the ones from her teacher today. They all were great!

Thankful Minister Edith

Angel and I arrived in LA for the first time on the eve of Micheal Jackson's death for a FBLA competition June 2009. We loved California. Is that near you.?

Zappycat 11-30-2010 04:44 PM

WElcome Edith! You have come to the right place! My advice would be "Keep it simple!!" Maybe use iron on pieces to reduce the amount of sewing for the kids. Also, fabric paints or crayons, maybe! Good luck! Show us the results!

Minister Edith 11-30-2010 04:45 PM

I"ll do my best.

Hopeful,
